The Trible Library is the intellectual center of Christopher Newport University. We help students develop research skills and support the academic and personal growth essential to studying the liberal arts and sciences. We combine the best of a traditional library with modern technology to create an interactive learning experience for the 21st century. We are a founding member of the Virtual Library of Virginia and offer students access to collections on a significant research university level. Local university collections are also available through the Virginia Tidewater Consortium.
Here, students explore and address the pressing questions facing humanity and contribute to creating new knowledge. Through the close mentorship of professors, undergraduate research fosters independent learning and complements coursework in meaningful ways. Students learn valuable skills that lead to success after graduation.
Opportunities abound for students in every discipline and result in insightful and creative papers, compelling experiments, artwork, and performances. Student work has led to publication in notable journals, presentations at conferences both here and abroad, and performances across the country. At most schools, students must wait until graduate studies to immerse themselves deeply in meaningful research. We put the focus on the undergraduate research experience. Whatever field excites you, you will find a unique opportunity to explore it here. The President's Leadership Program (PLP) is not just an academic program. At heart, we are a community determined to understand ourselves better, how we work with others, and the impact we can have in the world. Through a combination of academic study, experiential learning, and personal development, PLP will prepare you for a life of leadership, service, and civic responsibility.
Each semester you participate in the President's Leadership Program, live on campus, and meet the GPA requirements, you will receive a minimum $500 residential scholarship.
The Office of Counseling Services (OCS) provides a range of services to address the student body and its mental health needs. We are committed to maintaining a safe and comfortable place for students to talk about their concerns. In this place, they can not only be understood and respected but also encouraged and challenged. Our staff of dedicated mental health professionals is devoted to providing the highest quality of counseling services to the campus community.
At Christopher Newport, students lead diversity and inclusion efforts through their involvement in the Student Diversity & Equality Council and our cultural and identity-based organizations. Annual events like the Intercultural Festival, the Conference on Leading Change, the MLK Celebration, and Umoja work to strengthen, challenge, and celebrate our campus community's diversity. You will be challenged and exposed to social issues and identities different from your own to heighten self-awareness, get outside of your comfort zone, and increase confidence. We are also committed to creating inclusive and supportive spaces on campus through programs like Safe Zone, Conversations on Racial Equality, and diversity training programs with student leaders, staff, and faculty.
