Konan University is located on the eastern edge of Kobe City in Okamoto, a well-known residential area between Osaka and Kobe. Kobe is an international city that has assimilated various aspects of Western culture since the Meiji Period. This international flavor of Kobe is reflected in the campus life at Konan University, an institution with many exchange programs that welcome overseas students and send Konan students abroad.
Konan University encourages all those who have the desire to learn. The faculties of Economics, Law, and Business Administration offer a mid-career admissions system aimed at those wishing to resume their academic studies by enrolling as freshmen. Besides, an admissions system for transfer students who have done coursework at other higher education institutions allows them to enroll as juniors.
The graduate school accepts applications for mid-career admissions to Master's and Doctoral programs, providing adult students with the opportunity to put the experience they have gained in the working world to fair use in their chosen fields of specialization. Classes for the MBA program, for example, meet on weekday evenings and Saturdays in order to accommodate the schedules of students with full-time jobs.
A series of public lectures was begun in 1975 and is continuing today to increase contact and understanding between the University and the local community. The lectures provide an opportunity for speakers, primarily the Konan faculty, to present their research findings to the public. Those attending gain a chance to learn about exciting themes, some of which may directly relate to their work.
The range of themes covered is broad, including economics, history, literature, science, personal computers, and sports. Each year an exciting lineup of lectures is planned, thus winning much acclaim.
Konan University strives to accommodate those wishing to earn academic credits or obtain formal qualifications by creating various opportunities for lifetime learning. The non-degree enrollment program furthers these aims. The program enables students to enroll in classes at the university and earn up to 32 credits in a year, for which they receive a certificate of completion listing the credits they have earned. Students in the second category may attend classes and earn up to 20 academic credits in a year.
Overall, Konan University aims to become a groundbreaking university that provides a multitude of opportunities to all those who desire to learn.
Konan University sponsors a variety of events in addition to those mentioned above. The language classes offered at the Institute for Language and Culture employ state-of-the-art language labs to provide instruction in several different languages. The Research Institute's public forum is an opportunity for an active exchange of views in specialized fields.
The Counseling Center's student consultation office sponsors seminars and a host of other unique events. Furthermore, with the cooperation of administrations and other universities, Konan University has held the Hyogo Open College program and the Hyogo Lectures, which have been extremely popular.
Konan aims to offer a global-minded education, hoping to fulfill our founder's promise to "nurture scholars who will become the type of adults that are welcomed, accepted, and respected throughout the world.."
The Career Center aims to help every student establish their life goals during the four years of study at the University. Students develop an ability to become independent, so they can successfully carry out their goals. First-year students participate in the self-identity program, which clarifies their four-year educational plan and future goals. Sophomores participate in the Academic and Career Selection program, which helps them select their ideal academic or career route. Juniors participate in preparation for the Academic and Career Activities program, deciding on what is best for them.
The Career Center also provides private counseling by a career advisor an internship program in which students experience working in the real world while still in school a "career information reference system" where students can search for job information or information on company seminars using their home computer and Network Campus Tokyo, through which students can search for jobs in metropolitan areas.
Addressing the concerns that students may have during their university life, this is a place where students can have a good talk with counselors: a counseling center exclusively for students.
Students may have worries about communicating with others, tuition, the future, health, or family problems. To address the various problems students may have during their university life, Konan University has established the Student Counseling Center. The Center is located in Building 18, and a counselor (clinical psychologist) is always stationed there. Not only do students receive advice from counselors, but they can consult with a psychiatrist as well. Consulting via telephone or letters is accepted as well, and everything is kept strictly confidential.
The Salon Room, where books and periodicals can be found, is always open as a resting place and has become a place where students gather to find solace and relaxation. Students can take psychological tests, participate in group activities, and attend public lectures held regularly.
