As the only national University located in Fukushima Prefecture, Fukushima University, for over 50 years, has centered its curriculum on issues faced by virtual communities in the prefecture. Unlike the sample problems you might find in a high school textbook, real-life issues are seldom straightforward or confined within the ambit of a single discipline.
For this reason, Fukushima University utilizes its small class sizes and high teacher-to-student ratios to enable its programs to incorporate a variety of fieldwork and internship opportunities. Some examples of past projects include establishing student-led corporations in the community, implementing local-production for local-consumption business models, and selling local produce with farmers while dispelling negative impressions of radioactive contamination. These projects build bridges between our university resources and the community and provide excellent opportunities for our students to engage in mutually helpful ways with real people in difficult circumstances.

We believe a crucial difference between study at high school and study at University is that at University, your studies have a far more profound connection to the local community. This spring, many of the students who sat the Fukushima University entrance examinations did so because they wished to do voluntary work in the region. What prompted them to come here was that voluntary activities could form the practical component of their studies. Since immediately after the earthquake, students have participated in a wide range of volunteer activities, including helping at evacuation centers, removing debris and mud, cleaning up disaster-affected homes, and collecting donations. In recognition of their efforts, the University decided to offer academic credit for volunteer activities under the Self-Study Program, an existing subject offering one credit for 45 hours and two credits for 90 hours spent in volunteer activities during the academic year. The University believes that encouraging students to participate in volunteer activities will lead to their much-needed support for disaster-affected areas and the cultivation of greater student autonomy, initiative, and social awareness - the original objectives of the Self-Study Program.

In the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake, Fukushima University took full advantage of its human and intellectual networks to create an academic model of post-disaster reconstruction, unlike any other university in the world. As the only national University in the prefecture, Fukushima University was quick to cooperate with the prefectural government and various localities, organizations, and NPOs to offer a variety of supports such as volunteer work for evacuees and victims, radiation measurements in areas polluted by radioactive substances, and conducting in-depth surveys on actual damage to farm and fishery production. In order to effectively run long-term support and collaborative activities, the University created the Fukushima Future Center for Regional Revitalization (FURE) in April 2011 to support communities via research projects aimed at recovery and revitalization efforts in the prefecture.
