At Ehime University, we have taken our rebirth as the National University Corporation Ehime University in 2004 as an opportunity for setting out a new vision of "Becoming a university that is united as one" as our governance policy. Working to make this vision reality, we have already achieved some tangible results, including University-wide educational reforms which reach across departmental boundaries (including capacity development among teaching staff and the introduction of academic management methods based on the educational coordinator system), the creation of cross-departmental research centers (advanced research centers at the top global level and community-based research centers).
As organizational reforms being undertaken alongside the above developments, we have also set up four new organizations (the Institute for Education and Student Support (IESS), the Institute for the Promotion of Science and Technology, the Institute for Collaborative Relations, and the Institute for International Relations (IIR)). We are working to strengthen the functions of the university.
Meanwhile, with the shift towards knowledge-based societies gathering pace at the global level, bolstering universities' fundamental functions as "centers of knowledge" is crucial to reviving Japan as a nation. In other words, there is now a pressing need to make bold decisions and take ground-breaking university reforms that represent a decisive break from the past in particular, as national universities across Japan set out initiatives for exploiting their characteristics and strengths to the full while constructing the system for improving and developing themselves as institutions, we at Ehime University need to reinvent ourselves as a university that offers sustainable competitiveness and a high level of added value.
Against this backdrop, Ehime University has set out the vision of becoming "a university that is a beacon of the community." It will work to develop human resources who can drive forward the development of our region and to bring high-level knowledge and technology to society in a wide variety of domains, including industry, medicine, and education, while strengthening our local industrial innovation functions through our group community-based research centers as we transform ourselves into a distinctive international research hub in those advanced research fields where we enjoy particular strengths, including ultrahigh-pressure sciences, marine environmental science, and proteo-science.
With the current six-year plan (2016~2021), we have created a new vision to enhance the university's fundamental functions. Following our principle of becoming a university that 'leads our region and connects it to the world with striking originality,' Ehime University takes the initiative to implement educational, research, and social activities contributing to society from a global perspective. To realize this vision, we have the following three strategies.
We continue to lead our region by promoting organizational and education reforms to provide more people of promise to local communities to establish a new faculty that addresses regional issues and a center for faculty and staff development.
As a regional, national university, it is our mission to take the initiative in regional development. To realize this goal from the standpoint of human resources development, we put into force educational reforms to dispatch to the region more and more people with promise.
The university continues to lead the region through activities that enhance 'town, people and jobs' with striking originality as a center for community-based research institutes and through Center of Community/Center of Community + projects. Specifically, we are developing strategies for responding to the needs of the region.
We continue to promote world-class research by developing advanced research institutes in such fields as ultrahigh-pressure science, coastal environmental science, and protein-based drug development for the next generation's society and, while located in the region, serve as a link to the world. We are developing strategies with a global perspective to promote cutting-edge research to contribute to society by solving issues both in the region and the world.
