The origins of the University of Bologna go way back, and it is considered the oldest University in the Western world. Its history is intertwined with that of the great names of science and literature; it is a keystone and a point of reference for European culture.
The Rector represents the University legally and institutionally; he is the head of the university organization. He is responsible for pursuing the University'suniversity's goals based on quality criteria and in compliance with the principles of effectiveness, efficiency, transparency, and the promotion of merit.
Departments, Schools, Centres, other structures (art. 25 University Statute), and articulations constitute the University of Bologna's cultural, teaching, and research nucleus. The Advanced Schools, Institutes, and Colleges combine high-level scientific research with professional and specialist training.
The University of Bologna takes responsibility for ensuring the quality of its Degree Programmes and adopts Quality Assurance to carry out the related activities. In this way, the University guarantees - both internally and to external stakeholders - that its development and improvement objectives are adequately pursued.
The University considers research as the primary domain for elaborating ideas, projects, and technologies fit to deal with the requirements of the present and look to the future in a European and international context. The university is open to constant dialogue with the territory served by its structures and works intensively to disseminate scientific and cultural knowledge and awareness about the third mission.
The AVA system (Self-assessment – Periodic evaluation – Accreditation) is to improve the quality of the teaching and research carried out by the Universities, partly via external verification performed clearly and transparently. This verification results in a Periodic Accreditation opinion, following a process that acknowledges when a University (and its Degree Programmes) has maintained the Quality Requirements that enable it to carry out its institutional functions.
The University of Bologna needs your support to keep its standards of research and to teach high. By joining our enterprises, you support the younger generation and offer our students and society an opportunity for future growth.
So, to remain true to its centuries-old mission, the University is presenting a very sound, coherent, and realistic Strategic Plan and showing the potentials that will enable it to tackle the challenges of the coming years.
The first goal of the Strategic Plan is an investment in the complex range of teaching activities conducted throughout the Multicampus and across its wealth of traditional as well as new degree programs, with a synergy that will enable them to interconnect increasingly closely with the University Departments and Schools in which they are delivered. Teaching requirements can only be met by enhancing the quality of the teachers who join the academic staff and who need to embrace new trainers and innovators' role. Besides this, specific actions need to be taken to improve and expand the facilities and spaces where teaching activities occur. All the research facilities, from libraries to laboratories, need to be improved. And research itself has, in turn, become the lifeblood of the University, through its engagement in the process of European and international exchange and collaboration. Hence, the Strategic Plan's further goal is to strengthen our extensive network of relations with universities throughout the world to share and compare the knowledge developed within our facilities with that of other institutions and other cultures.
Furthermore, the University of Bologna needs to become a great laboratory of ideas available to local actors operating in the industrial, corporate, and cultural worlds. New knowledge and learning, straddling the humanities, science, and technology, focus on the research activities of the University, as it engages in an intensive exchange of ideas with all the private stakeholders. They have its same concerns and share with it the ethical and independent character of research.
And this brings us back to training and education processes once again, and to the realities of the student world, which has always played a leading role in the life of the University.
The central importance of training for every country's development, which the United Nation's development agenda states as one of the seventeen key goals to be achieved over the next fifteen years, is the guiding principle that our Strategic Plan shares with all other universities, both nationally and internationally.
