We are proud of our long-established commitment to widening participation, our world-leading research, public and private sector collaborations, and our track record for providing quality student experiences that result in graduates who are the tomorrow-makers of our societies and economies.
To be bold and inspirational in providing education, research, and creative practice, which offers transformative experiences to students, staff, communities, and business partners in the UK and worldwide. The Strategic Plan 2016 - 2021 sets out a clear statement of intent that builds on the University of Sunderland's strengths - and is ambitious and relevant for the 21st Century global University.
The University is overseen by a Board of Governors consisting of independent members and staff and student representatives.
Every year, the University celebrates graduates' achievements and prominent local and international people who have made a significant contribution to cultural, business, or economic life. Honorary graduates in 2017 included: Brenda Blethyn OBE, Dr. Andrew Singleton, Paul Callaghan CBE, DL, FRSA, and Lesley Spuhler OBE.
As stated in our Strategic Plan 2016 – 2021, the University of Sunderland is proud to be an anchor institution and' future shaper' for the North East region. The University has grown and developed over recent years, not only through the ethos of shared institutional values and ambitions but also by embracing four essential beliefs that influence our thinking and behavior.
At the University of Sunderland, we are acutely aware of our social responsibilities and the impact of these responsibilities on employees, customers, partners, and the environment. We aim to make a difference and create and nurture an inclusive environment where we all can flourish.
We will provide an inspiring, enterprising, and empowering experience for our students and staff. We value people for their creativity and update our knowledge and practice to enhance the student experience and improve our institutional performance. We work together as a community with our partners and build lasting relationships to achieve our shared ambition. We celebrate our diverse culture, where everyone's contribution is welcomed and valued. We strive for the highest quality in academic delivery, research, and service standards.
The University of Sunderland will be compelling and different because: Our programs will be distinctive and relevant with work-integrated learning and professional practice embedded within. Our research and practice will be contemporary with an immediate impact on our communities, business partners, and students. Our students will become lifelong partners in the institution, able to access career accelerators and updated learning and practice throughout their lifetime.
