In 2017, the University of Hertfordshire celebrated 25 years of being a university and 65 years of delivering first-class higher education. Our history goes back to 1941 when Hertfordshire County Council entered into a partnership with the de Havilland Aircraft Company to train 15 and 16-year-old aircraft apprentices. Then, in 1952, Hatfield Technical College was built by Hertfordshire County Council. We achieved university status in 1992 and are now focused on becoming internationally renowned as the UK's leading business-facing university.

The Students' Union on our College Lane campus is the hub of university life, with bars, regular live music, and events throughout the year, including our famous Summer Ball, a chance to let your hair down at the end of the term. Our entertainment venue, 'Forum Hertfordshire,' opened in September 2009. It provides an exciting contemporary venue with state-of-the-art equipment, club, bars, shopping, and eateries. You will find a wide range of places to eat and drink across the University of Hertfordshire. Whether you want a quick bite to eat in between lectures or meetings, or a leisurely meal with friends and colleagues, you will find a convenient solution wherever you are. We operate high street coffee outlets such as Costa Coffee and Starbucks, and restaurants open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You will also find sandwich bars within many buildings offering a tasty selection of options to take away.

Whatever you are into, there is an opportunity to join a club or society - or even set up your own at Hertfordshire. With over 100 active clubs and societies on campus, there is a vibrant community of like-minded people out there waiting for you.
From literature to LGBT, from philosophy to film-making, from the serious to the downright silly - there is a club or society at Hertfordshire for you - and if you cannot find the club you are looking for, the Students' Union will provide you with support and funding to set up your own.
Suppose you are interested in a career in the media, or you love to get involved. In that case, our Student's Union has a wide range of opportunities for you - from writing articles for the Student Newspaper 'Universe' to presenting a show on our resident radio station 'Crush FM.' Getting involved in student media will give you great experience to put on your CV, and it is great fun... visit the 'freshers' fair' in the first week of term to get signed up and start getting involved.
There are also plenty of local interest groups and societies you can get involved with; Hatfield and the surrounding areas are well served with community and interest groups. Whether you are a committed athlete, play sport for fun, or fancy trying your hand at something new, the Hertfordshire Sports Village on the Hatfield de Havilland campus will have something to suit you. We have got some of the best sporting facilities in the UK - so good in fact; many professional sports teams use them as a training base.
There is a dedicated team of Student Support Officers on both the College Lane and de Havilland campuses. Student Support Officers are responsible for the welfare, pastoral care, and discipline of all students living in accommodation. If you are having any difficulties with the accommodation, we should be your first point of call. Please feel free to approach us when we are visiting accommodation during the day. You are also welcome to visit us at the Hutton Hub in B440, at the Accommodation Office at de Havilland, or by requesting a staff member at the Oval helpdesk or Residential Helpdesk at de Havilland.
