University of Bengkulu (UNIB) was established based on the Republic of Indonesia Presidential Instruction Number 17, 1982 and inaugurated by the Minister of Education and Culture of Republic of Indonesia, Prof. Dr. Daud Yusuf. At the same moment, the first UNIB rector, Prof. Ir. Soenjoto Sumodihardjo (University of Gadjah Mada), was also inaugurated to serve from 1982 to 1986. Then, Dr. Ir. Soekotjo (University of Gadjah Mada) previously served as the First Rector Assistant, led UNIB from 1986 to 1990. From 1990 to 1995, Dr. Ir. Nitza Arbi (Andalas University) was given the mandate to lead UNIB. From 1995 to 2005, Rector's position was occupied by Prof. Dr. H Zulkifli Husin, S.E., M.Sc. (University of Syahkuala). From 2005 to 2013, Prof. Ir. ZainaLMuktamar, M.Sc., Ph.D., was chosen as the Rector. Finally, since the 4th of October 2013, Dr. Ridwan Nurazi, S.E., M.Sc. was inaugurated and served as the 6th Rector of the University of Bengkulu until now.
The existence of UNIB was the accomplishment of the long tiring struggle of Governor Soeprapto supported wholeheartedly by Bengkulu's people, customary figures, Bengkulu Provincial Government, and a Private University, namely Universitas Semarak Bengkulu (UNSEB). The manifestation of support from the UNSEB was actualized by transferring its students as the pioneer students and the University's land area of 24,9 Ha, located in Beringin Raya District Bengkulu to UNIB.
University logo Rafflesia flower consisted of 5 (five) petals represent Pancasila. The Sun has 17 (seventeen) lights symbolizing the Number President Decision on establishing the University of Bengkulu. Two lines of small thorn circle are thirty one which symbolizes number 31. Three big thorns represent number 3, which means the month of President Decision. The first and second wave arrangement represents number 8, while a third of the wave represents number 2. The two numbers are combined into 82, which is the year of the establishment of UNIB. Thorns, circles, and waves represent the date, month, and year of President Decision issued on establishing the University of Bengkulu (31st of March, 1982). The mountain symbolizes a sustainable grandeur. The center moon consists of a small to the big circle, which symbolizes the spring that flows into the river and the sea as the source that brings fertility and continuous production. The Sun represents the source of energy.
Color Navy Blue means Background of outer petals (edge and middle). Mountain, Sea Background of thorns in the middle of the flower. Yellow Sun, Petals, of Rafflesia flowerFour big thorns Small thorns are inside and outside. The flag of the University of Bengkulu is blue, and the emblem of the University is yellow, located in the middle.
