Tradition and innovation are the trademarks of our almost 600-year history. Education and research started in Rostock even 73 years before Columbus discovered America as the university was founded in 1419. A lot has changed in the meantime, such as the technical faculty founded in 1951 - the first one ever established at a classical university. Plenty of new, modern buildings, like the completely new campus for natural sciences in the district Suedstadt, represent our university's innovative strength and modernity.
Today, with about 14,000 students and 2,933 staff members (in the medical care sector: 2,926), the University of Rostock offers fascinating perspectives into nearly all scientific fields. With the four profile lines Life, Light and Matter / Maritime Systems / Aging Science and Humanities / Knowledge – Culture – Transformation, the University of Rostock has at its disposal excellent interdisciplinary research fields in the areas of natural and technological sciences, medicine, life sciences, humanities, and cultural studies. The standard set for all our actions: we want to impress with our performance.

Six hundred years, the University of Rostock - what an excellent occasion to look back to the oldest university's eventful history in the Baltic Sea Region. True to the motto "Traditio et Innovatio," our university has been steadily developing. Today, it has nine faculties, subdivided into many institutes and hospitals. Also, the Interdisciplinary Faculty interlinks researchers and students from all specializations in four departments: "Life, Light, and Matters," "Maritime Systems," "Aging of the Individual and the Society," and "Knowledge - Culture - Transformation." These are the focuses of our research, which have grown from the university's tradition.
We want to celebrate the anniversary year 2019 together with you. Already today, we most cordially invite you not to miss this unique opportunity. I would be pleased if you would become a part of our 600th anniversary. May it be a great, exciting, and thrilling anniversary year 2019.
The Coordination Office for Diversity and Equal Opportunities, established at the end of 2016, is the central point for gender and diversity issues at the University of Rostock. It is structurally resident in the Rectorate and is led by the Vice-Rector for International Affairs, Equal Opportunities and Diversity Management, Prof. Dr. Bettina Eichler-Löbermann. The newly established Coordination Office aims to connect and bind effectively areas and projects dealing with the promotion of diversity and equality in order to be able to develop overarching diversity management for the University of Rostock. Internationalization, equal opportunities, and welcome culture cannot be thought of as separate categories, but they are applied across all university areas. The Coordination Office develops measures regarding gender and diversity issues at the University of Rostock. It contributes to its various actions to develop diversity as an excellent chance for the University of Rostock.
It is the objective of Rostock University to strengthen and improve permanently Welcome Services. The University of Rostock subsists through the diversity of its students and employees. The heterogeneity of the people constitutes an essential resource for academic development. That is why the University of Rostock considers the active shaping of diversity and the realization of equal opportunities, one of its primary objectives.
The center assists international doctoral students and guest scientists with research projects, arrival, and housing in Rostock. It advises on work permits and child care, on language courses and leisure opportunities, and offers help with the completion of paperwork. It cooperates closely with the city itself, as well as regional businesses and research facilities.
The Faculty of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences is one of nine faculties at the University of Rostock. The comparatively small and manageable faculty with its almost 20 professorships and a good care relationship creates a personal atmosphere and ensures compliance with the bachelor and master study programs' regular study time. The university sport offers students and staff a range from leisure sport to competitive sport, for everyone who seeks physical or mental compensation for study or everyday working routine.
University admission begins with validating the higher education entrance qualification to assess if abroad acquired graduations. University degrees entitle prospective students to commence a study at the University of Rostock.
