Founded as Bochum's first mining school in 1816, the Technische Hochschule Georg Agricola (THGA) stands for competencies in engineering for more than 200 years. Today, with future-oriented emphases like Mineral Resources Engineering and Post-mining, Material Efficiency, Product Development and Production, Smart Energy, or Energy Efficiency, the THGA connects its traditional know-how with a modern focus. Companies are very interested in THGA graduates because of their special practical and theoretical education. As a private, state-approved university of applied sciences, the THGA has close relations with the industry and international partners.

The THGA is open: International students are welcome at our campus! Currently, we have students from more than 30 different countries studying at the TGA. Nevertheless, everyone knows everyone at our small, familiar university. We do not have overcrowded lecture-halls but small learning groups. International students can study all subjects the THGA is offering. Almost all of our subjects can be studied full-time or part-time – by the way: without tuition fees.

Since 1816 the TH Georg Agricola University of Applied Sciences (THGA) has a unique position under the wide range of universities in Germany.

Its unique features are represented with its specific culture of almost 200 years of tradition and its unique profile: The THGA stands for outstanding practice-oriented engineering education. The THGA promotes a kind teaching and learning culture. It also stands for openness for young people impartially from their origin. The variety of study courses is flexible, which helps students to organize their studies individually.

The THGA has perfect esteem. Its students and alumni and partners in the economy, science, society, and national and international partners appreciate the university's reputation.

The THGA is leading in the field of raw material science in Germany. It works with well-known universities all around the world on the same level.

"Think global, act locally "– with this slogan, the THGA identifies itself with the Ruhr area, especially with Bochum. The THGA works dedicatedly together with other local universities in the network of UniverCity Bochum and participates in the structural change of the city and region.

On the one hand, we have a high request for engineers, and on the other hand, we have a growing number of young students at the TGA. Considering these requirements, the THGA has a bright future perspective and is carrying out this way.

You can only be admitted to a Bachelor's degree program if your high school diploma entitles you to attend a university of applied science (Fachhochschulreife) or a research university ("Allgemeine Hochschulreife") and you have completed a six weeks internship before enrolling.

Applicants for Master's degree programs must have a German Diplom or Bachelor's degree. The final admission decisions are made based on the student's overall grade point average. Applicants may have to take qualification tests for specific fields and programs.

International applicants must provide proof of a university degree that is equivalent to the German Bachelor's.

International applicants must present transcripts and other documents that prove that they are entitled to attend a university in their home country. This entitlement is equivalent to the German Fachhochschulreife. Alternatively, they can present (a) documents that show that they have passed the tests granting them the Fachhochschulreife, or (b) foreign documents recognized by the Ministry of Education that show they have obtained the Fachhochschulreife or the Allgemeine Hochschulreife.

Chinese applicants must also present the certificate granted by the Academic Testing Center (Akademische Prüfstelle – APS) of the German Embassy in Beijing.

Moroccan applicants must attend a one-year college preparatory program (Studienkolleg). Alternatively, they can present a general or technical baccalauréat along with documents showing that they completed one year of studies in Morocco in a degree program similar to the one they are applying for

The three main pillars of the TH are raw-materials, energy, and the environment. Those pillars contain significant challenges for the future of the region, but as well as for national and global development. Our current main priorities divert from those pillars:

    • Raw materials and Post-mining

Industrial production techniques and material-efficiency

  • Smart Energy and energy-efficiency

The TH provides the university development plan that the research priorities are going to be developed further in their field of competences of the TH in the next years.

Next to the main priorities, the TH is also dealing with a lot of other research topics.

From designing machines and equipment to developing mechatronic systems to utilizing renewable energy, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Material Sciences explores a wide range of subjects. Interdisciplinary projects at the Faculty look at programmable logic controllers for simulating materials handling processes in factories. Or analyzing chassis and quality management programs for the automotive industry.

TH Georg Agricola tackles issues relating to climate change in its energy development program. From biofuels to wind turbines and solar energy, it fosters a sustainable energy mix and cleans energy supplies with renewable power production processes.

The applied material sciences research the properties, safety characteristics, and quality of materials and develop products using renewable materials. In their research, they look at both the financial issues and the technical aspects.
