The University of Burgos, responding to the growing interest in Spanish across the world, offers a range of courses in Spanish Language and Culture each year for international students and teachers.
Our courses are intended to enable students to learn our language while immersed in a linguistic experience, not only in the classroom but also in their daily life alongside the people of Burgos, appreciating our history and our monuments, savoring our famous gastronomic delights, and warming to our welcome and our noble-minded nature.
Courses are held at the San Amaro Campus, within the "Hospital del Rey," founded in 1195 by Alfonso VIII and formerly a monastic hospital on the pilgrimage to Santiago, better known as the "Camino de Santiago." The buildings are superb examples of Proto-Gothic architecture.
The University of Burgos currently has almost 10,000 students studying at six centers: the Science Faculties, the Faculty of Economics and Business Studies, the Faculty of Humanities and Education, the Faculty of Law, and the Higher Polytechnic School, as well as at three associated schools, the School of Nursing, the School of Labour Relations and the School of Tourism. It currently offers over 30 different undergraduate degrees and, also, over 20 Ph.D. Programs, as well as several Official Masters and other graduate courses.
The University of Burgos, since its recent self-governing status, has offered Spanish language courses throughout the entire year directed, by preference, at specific groups who are seeking courses that take account of their own educational needs. Figuring among these groups are Spanish teachers in secondary education from educational centers in Europe and the United States of America, students from European and U.S. universities, Erasmus students, and international companies' executives.
Classes in Spanish language and culture are taught in a modern, functional building situated in the area surrounding the Hospital del Rey, now home to the University of Burgos and formerly a hospital for pilgrims, ever since it was founded by King Alfonso VIII, in 1195, to care for those in mid-pilgrimage along the Camino de Santiago who fell sick.
Excursions and theatre, culinary arts, or dance workshops all serve as learning situations to complement the Spanish language classes taught by qualified teachers with experience in the teaching of Spanish to foreigners, developed to attain acceptable communicative competence levels. Furthermore, students studying Spanish will be able to access the internet, practice sports, and enjoy the university's leisure activities.
