Ubon Ratchathani University (UBU) was founded in 1987 as a regional campus of Khon Kaen University and established as a university by Royal Charter in 1990. It aims to provide educational opportunities for students from all provinces, specifically those from provinces in North-East Thailand, Amnat Charoen, Mukdahan, Nakhon Phanom, and Sakon Nakhon, Si Sa Ket, Ubon Ratchathani, and Yasothon. The University supports and encourages research that benefits the local, national, and international communities and promotes activities that preserve the area's cultural identity.

Since its foundation, UBU has rapidly grown. We have always been striving for academic excellence to promote sustainable development of the country and the region, especially the southern part of Northeast Thailand, a region rich in culture, history, and potential development.

UBU has links to various overseas institutions via research, collaborative projects, and exchange programs. It plays a significant role in the development of the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS).UBU also proclaims its goal to become a leading learning institution in ASEAN. The University is working hard to ensure its staff's and graduates' readiness for the ASEAN Community in 2015.

UBU offers an extensive range of undergraduate and post-graduate programs with strength in Thai and GMS-related issues and traditional academic areas. These programs take place on a campus that is a blend of pleasant surroundings and modern technology in a safe environment, conducive to learning and living.

UBU is located on the Warin-Detudom Road, approximately 15 kilometers south of Ubon. It is easily accessible by public transport from the airport and the numerous bus terminals in Ubon and the Warin train station. The campus is spacious and is situated in a rural setting, occupying approximately 5,300 rai (848 hectares).

The University's logo is a Lan Chang period chedi, a religious structure standard in Esarn (North-East Thailand). The chedi contains a lotus blossom resting on a three-tiered pedestal representing the province's principal rivers, the Mekhong, Chii, and Moon. The two bottom petals of the blossom represent the qualities of morality and intellectuality that the University strives to develop in its students. The three top petals represent the "Triple Gem" of Buddhism, a recognized pathway to happiness. The pink of the lotus is the province's official color, and the blue outline of the logo represents the strength and stability of the University. The yellow background is UBU's official color.

The University's symbolic tree is the Kan-Krao, a fragrant yellow flowering tree that grows prolifically on campus. Kan-Krao can grow even in infertile soil. Its timber is tough and can withstand termites, so it is excellent in constructing houses and furniture. The tree represents the strength and unity of the University working towards the future.

UBU's vision is to be a leading teaching and learning University in the Greater Mekong Sub-region, producing high-quality graduates and creating knowledge and innovations for a sustainable society. Mission:

  • To produce capable, ethical, and self-sufficient graduates of an international standard.
  • To conduct research and encourage innovations beneficial to the community.
  • To serve people in the local community, especially the southern part of North-East Thailand and the Mekong Sub-region.
  • To conserve and promote local and regional arts and culture.
