The University of Bucharest was founded by Decree no. 765 of July 4th,1864, by Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza and is a leading academic center and a significant point of reference in society.

Through the high standards of the academic endeavor guaranteed on all departments, the University of Bucharest aims to be the most important higher education institution in Romania. The main goal of the University of Bucharest is to obtain the highest quality of educational services and research activity possible by adopting international-grade competitive standards and by manifesting a continuous interest in the assurance of quality, interdisciplinary collaboration and leadership, as well as in the excellence of the activities of the professors and the employees.

The University of Bucharest models its educational process based on the needs of the society of knowledge, in which the formation of competencies and abilities plays an essential role. Renewal and reformation are constitutive processes. To apply efficient methods in this process, the University of Bucharest makes its strategies and objectives public, debates them, and applies them in such a way so that members of the academic community can feel encouraged to contribute with their ideas and initiatives. The University of Bucharest promotes an ethical climate of trust and communication on all levels, anticipates changes, and elaborates on pro-active plans.

The University of Bucharest advances four fundamental principles of research and academic education:

  • Fundamental and applied research which reflects the engagement of the whole academic community for deepening and extending knowledge in the fields of natural sciences, social sciences, and humanistic sciences
  • Critical thinking, which allows the free expression of the diversity of the intellectual styles and the methods of research specific to each research field existing in the University of Bucharest
  • The indiscriminate access to social inclusion for students which coagulate the democratic values that the University of Bucharest places at the center of the processes which form the students
  • The public's engagement, through which the University of Bucharest legitimizes itself towards society and expresses its desire to find solutions based on knowledge for the current issues the country is facing.

The University of Bucharest remains in the 701+ series of the best world universities, according to QS University Rankings, the most popular global ranking for universities and among the most critical 500 universities in the world, according to QS Ranking of Universities by Subject.

In general, both within the country and abroad, the University of Bucharest is considered the most important educational, research, and cultural institution in Romania. During its 150 years of existence, it has achieved a steadfast national and international prestige.

The numerous generations of students and professors have succeeded in asserting our UniversityUniversity as one of the benchmark institutions for Romanian society. It is the first existing Romanian institution ever to reach the top 600 universities in the world.

The University of Bucharest offers several study programs on all levels and means of university education: 93 bachelor programs, 208 master programs, and 21 doctoral programs. All of these are accredited or authorized. The University of Bucharest also holds the TIFFIN EMBA master program.

The diplomas awarded by the University of Bucharest are recognized in most countries around the world. Within the University of Bucharest, there are study programs organized in collaboration with other prestigious universities abroad. The graduates of these programs may receive diplomas from both the University of Bucharest and partner universities.

The University of Bucharest is one of the most important scientific research centers nationwide. There are over 50 research institutes, departments, and centers within the UniversityUniversity, most of them collaborating with similar scientific centers abroad.

The University of Bucharest is part of a reliable international collaboration network – 300 bilateral collaboration agreements have been signed with universities in 52 countries. Annually, over 1000 students of the University of Bucharest who perform various development or improvement activities within a significant number of academic programs in universities in Western Europe, the United States, Canada, Japan, etc.

The University of Bucharest has been and still is the motor of necessary reformation measures for the development of higher education, which has also been taken over by other universities around the country or represented the grounds for elaborating several laws and national regulations. In 2011, the University of Bucharest was classified by the Minister of Education, Research, Youth, and Sports as the first advanced research and education university. At present, the University of Bucharest has almost 32.000 students and over 1300 professors.
