Reşiţa is one of the oldest and more renowned industrial centers of metal works and machine-building. This heritage started more than two centuries ago, more precisely on July 4th, 1771. In order to honor these traditions and to respond at the same time to a long-perceived need, in 1971 we began here the development of technical higher education, by the establishment of the Engineering Institute, initially subordinated to the Polytechnic Institute "Traian Vuia" of Timişoara, prestigious education establishment recognized throughout Europe.

Following a natural evolution process, in 1990, the Faculty of Engineering was founded, still under the aegis of the Polytechnic Institute "Traian Vuia", with the sections. Machine-Building Technology, Welding Equipment and Technology, Electro mechanics, Plastic Deformations, Heat Treatments, and Metal Casting.

1992 is the year that represents a notable landmark in the evolution of the Reşiţa academic education, as it is the year when the University "Eftimie Murgu" was founded, autonomous from the Timişoara Polytechnic School, with two faculties: the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Law and Economics, which, starting with October 1st, 1995 became the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences. At present, the educational process is provided by three faculties: Faculty of Engineering and Management, Faculty of Economics, and Faculty of Social Sciences.

The University" Eftimie Murgu" has become, during its existence, a symbol of Reşiţa and Mountainous Banat, enhancing its regional representativeness. Furthermore, the 45 years of higher education in Reşiţa entitles us to talk about tradition and continuity. In a dynamic society requiring the alignment to the European standards, academic education's social dimension is the first and utmost target to reach. The focus on the individual is thus a goal strengthened by the need for granting equality of opportunities, by an equitable education and the maximum valorization of personal potential, and by promoting performance at the same time. More than four decades of existence have contributed to the continuous development and modernization of the educational process, as the University" Eftimie Murgu" has always endeavored to remain within the ranks of the most prestigious institutions of higher education in all the fields in which it provides training programs.

The University, "Eftimie Murgu" of Reşiţa, is a university in the region. For the region that meets the local education needs through education, it is applied for research and knowledge transfer.

The mission assumed by the University "Eftimie Murgu" of Reşiţa refers to:

• Initial and lifelong professional training, through bachelor, master, and Ph.D. programs of university studies, post-secondary programs, and courses of professional specialization and enhancement in domains relevant for the needs of the region
• Training creative and flexible alumni with entrepreneurial thinking, able to contribute to the sustainable development of the region
• Training graduates with civic spirit and social responsibility, who will act as active European citizens in the community and society
• Support for the business environment and the pubic institutional milieu through applied research on topics relevant to the region
• Knowledge and know-how transfer to local firms and institutions.

For the next five years, the University aims at affirming more decisively its status of "applied sciences" university and at approaching, in all the study programs offered, active teaching/learning methods, meant to provide its graduates with thorough theoretic knowledge, supported by practical abilities and solid cross competences.

Moreover, the University aims at maintaining its position of University preponderantly providing applied research, oriented toward immediate results in industry and society, as well as knowledge and know-how transfer to the business environment and the local public institutional milieu. And last but not least, the University "Eftimie Murgu" of Reşiţa intends to remain an active presence in its region, firmly anchored in the reality of the Caraş-Severin county.
