The University of Turku, the campus area, is home to Turku's Swedish University, Åbo Akademi, and the Turku University of Applied Sciences. The total of students in Turku universities is nearly 40 000.
All the essential services for the staff and students are on the campus: student restaurants, libraries, cafés, bars, convenience stores, to name a few. Furthermore, the city center and market square are within an easy 10-minute walking distance. The campus lies the Student Village – a home and a familiar place to many students and alumni.
The buildings on the Turku campus represent different centuries and decades. The idyllic wooden houses operated as a garrison for the Russian army at the end of the 19th century.
One of the newest buildings on the campus is the ICT building. All three universities, the University of Turku, Åbo Akademi, and the Turku University of Applied Sciences, operate and collaborate.
The University of Turku, established in 1920, has seven faculties and 11 independent units. There are 20,000 students and 3,300 staff members. More information on the University can be found on these pages, in the Annual Report or the Ministry of Education and Culture statistics.
The new strategy's main themes are useful research, responsible education, a catalyst for social well-being and the economy, and community well-being. The strategy is based on the University's shared values: ethicality, criticality, creativity, openness, and communality.

The University's operation results from the university community members' competent, responsible, and ethical activities. Quality management is part of the regular operation of the University. Responsible persons and a quality work steering group are in charge of developing and coordinating quality management. Also, we participate in different external evaluations and audits. The Finnish Education Evaluation Centre has awarded the University of Turku a quality label valid for six years until 16 June 2020.
The University's operation results from the university community members' competent, responsible, and ethical activities. At the University of Turku, the Vice-rector in charge of the quality work is Riitta Pyykkö.
Quality management at the University of Turku is an integrated part of all operations, and the same division of responsibilities is followed in quality management as in other operations. The University's Quality Manager is Senior Advisor Kari Seppälä. In faculties, the dean is responsible for organizing the quality work. In departments and other units, this responsibility lies with the head of the department.

The Quality Manager is in charge of the coordination and development of operations about the University's quality management, the preparation, and presentation of the decisions about the University's quality system and monitoring the execution of these decisions, reporting on the information and results produced by the quality system to the University's leadership. As a coworker in quality, Development Specialist Ilona Tuominen is, e.g., in charge of checking and updating the contents and links of the Quality Manual and the communication related to the University's quality system in cooperation with University Communications.
The steering group for the University's quality work monitors the University's quality work and makes suggestions concerning the instructions and recommendations for its development. The chair of the steering group is Vice-Rector Riitta Pyykkö, Senior Advisor to the steering group is Kari Seppälä, and the secretary is Development Specialist Ilona Tuominen.
Turku's academic history extends back to the 13th century when people from Turku went to study in the universities of Central Europe. In 1640, the first University of Finland, the Royal Academy of Turku, was established by Christina, Queen of Sweden.
The University of Turku was established in 1920 with donations from 22 040 citizens, and it became the first Finnish University in Finland.
The University's founding years were an era of intense patriotism, and Finland took its first steps as an independent country. This spirit can also be sensed in the motto of the University:
