Södertörn University provides high-quality research and education at all levels, offering a friendly atmosphere and an inspiring environment. Our modern, attractive campus is located in Flemingsberg, 19 minutes from central Stockholm on the commuter train. Södertörn University combines interesting subjects to make engaging and often unique degrees. We offer 250 courses and 70 programs and currently have 11 000 enrolled students. We conduct education and research in the humanities, social sciences, technology, and natural science. We also offer teacher education with an intercultural profile. Research into the Baltic region and Eastern Europe forms a knowledge environment that is among the world's best.

Our research is relevant to contemporary challenges, locally and globally, and to timeless issues. The governing board of Södertörn University has established the objectives to guide its activities over the next five years. Research – within five years, we will have achieved:

• National and international breakthroughs in research relating to the Baltic Sea region and Eastern Europe and recognition of the university's status as a knowledge hub for such research.
• Third-cycle education in central areas of activity.
• Teachers who conduct research, providing high-quality links to research in all education.
• A more significant proportion of external research funding.

As a university, we have an essential role to play in the reception of refugees. We have the opportunity to help people on their way back to productive, motivating professional lives and academic studies. Anna Galin has been responsible for coordinating the university's refugee activities since the autumn of 2016 and says that she has met great enthusiasm. One of the first things I did was to initiate a network for refugee issues at the university. After just a few weeks, almost 50 people had expressed an interest in the network, and most of them had a project or initiative linked to refugee issues that they wanted to discuss. Södertörn University is also providing internships for newly-arrived refugees, in both academia and administration. The aim is to contribute networks and vocational Swedish, intending to help refugees enter the Swedish labor market.

Södertörn University has professional, creative research environments that range from many disciplines and fields. Our research has a new focus united with an active and critical approach to the past. Many research groups and research projects strive to achieve a high level of contemporary and social relevance. The university's research generally has an international focus, even in subjects that traditionally examine their own national cultures and history. A keyword is multidisciplinary. Södertörn University has a strong tradition of multidisciplinary research. Cooperation across conventional boundaries is essential in achieving more nuanced knowledge of complex social phenomena, resulting in new perspectives and problem formulations.

The centers add educational value to the university by focusing on scientific interest at the intersection of traditional disciplines, forming creative meeting places for staff and students. Södertörn University has the right to award third-cycle (doctoral) degrees within four multidisciplinary research areas. Providing and being responsible for third-cycle programs is a central aspect of a living research environment. The university has previously had third-cycle students in several subjects. They conducted their activities and were educated at Södertörn University, but collaborated with other higher education institutions.
