The First Daughters of Charity: Crisologa Navarro, Ignacia Ostolazas, Juana Morga, Rita Delome, Antonia Novoa and Sales Montoya arrived in the Bicol Region to establish the Escuela – Colegio Diocesano de Sta. Isabel upon the request of Lord Don Fray Francisco Gainza, OP, Bishop of Nueva Caceres the imperial benefactress, Queen Isabela II of Spain. On 11 January 1872 a Royal Decree elevated the Colegio de Sta. Isabel to Escuela Normal de Maestras.
Research activity in USI is centered in the Colleges and its various Units, which include the College of Health Education, College of Business Education, Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Teacher Education, Social Work and Music, Research and Development Center, Human Resource and Development Office, Office of the VP for Student Development Services, Office of the Director for Academic Services, and the Office of the University Community Extension Services. The mission of the RDC is to serve the broad research community of The Universidad de Sta. Isabel, a community that is instrumental in meeting the strategic aims of the University, which are described in the University's Expanded Operational Plan.
The aim is to expand and strengthen the University's commitment to research, scholarship, and creative activity to sustain and extend the knowledge base, enrich the teaching and learning environment, and enhance economic development in the community, region, nation, and eventually across the world. It also aims to increase USI's competitiveness for merit-based grants and contracts in support of science and technology research from various funding agencies.
The President Scholarship is categorized into Full President Scholarship, Half President Scholarship, and President Service Grant. These are all awarded upon the University President's discretion to deserving students who belong to the socially disadvantaged sector to recognize their outstanding academic performance and unique talents and the areas of arts, music, sports, graphics, computer animations, leadership, community service, and the like.
Qualified applicants are required to submit a written application and a written recommendation from a teacher, adviser, moderator, dean, administrator, or principal. Academic scholarship is a full or half tuition fee discount granted to financially disadvantaged but academically competent students who meet the College's specific criteria. This applies only for students taking up Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, Bachelor of Science in Accountancy, Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy, Bachelor in Elementary Education, Bachelor in Secondary Education, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science in Social Work, and Bachelor of Music. This scholarship is good for four years for as long as the student can maintain the academic grade requirements set by the College. The St. Louise de Marillac Grant of the Daughters of Charity provides educational assistance to deserving young people who are academically capable yet financially handicapped. The grantees are expected to help the University through varied works they will be asked to render as part of their total formation. A special grant is awarded to one graduate from any Daughter of Charity School per the School Head's recommendation. The grantee must belong to a low-income family that must be academically competent with a general weighted average grade of 85 or above and with no grade below 80 in any subject during his fourth year in high school. St. Elizabeth of Hungary scholarship is granted to Universidad de Sta. Isabel Basic Education Department Graduates only. A full scholarship is awarded to the Top Ten of a graduating batch, and half scholarship is granted to the next Top Ten of the said graduating batch. Close to this, twenty (20%) percent discount on tuition fees is given to all graduates. The said grant no longer covers an excess in the regular number of years required to finish the course.
Mother Seton Hospital was established in Panganiban Drive, Naga City. In 1991, the hospital transferred to its present location at Roxas Avenue, Naga City. Mother Seton Hospital continues to provide quality health care to Nagueños and Bikolanos. Colegio de Sta. Isabel Annex was established on July 11, 1966, in Pili, Camarines Sur, through the request of the Parish Priest, Msgr. Bonifacio Boaqueña, with the assistance of Sister Imelda Espiritu, D.C., Mother Superior of CSI. The school became independent on June 18, 1971, and was recognized as St. Catherine Laboure School, which later was renamed as St. Louise de Marillac School of Pili in 1999. Colegio de Sta. Isabel is granted its University Status. It acquired the name Universidad de Sta. Isabel. Mother Seton Hospital is merged with Universidad de Sta. Isabel is making it to the university hospital. USI is the only University in the Archdiocese of Caceres offering courses in Health Services which operates its hospital. The Integration of St. Louise de Marillac School of Pili (formerly St. Catherine Laboure School) with the Universidad de Sta. Isabel, as a campus, started to take shape. The three institutions of the Daughters of Charity in the Archdiocese of Caceres consolidate into one organizational entity under the name of Universidad de Sta. Isabel.
