Founded in 1889 as New Mexico's flagship institution, The University of New Mexico now occupies nearly 800 acres near old Route 66 in the heart of Albuquerque, a metropolitan area of more than 500,000 people. From the magnificent mesas to the west, past the historic Rio Grande banks to the Sandia Mountains to the east, Albuquerque is a blend of culture and cuisine, styles and stories, people, pursuits panoramas.
Offering a unique campus environment with a Pueblo Revival architectural theme, the campus buildings echo nearby Pueblo Indian villages. The nationally recognized campus arboretum and the famous duck pond offer an outstanding botanical experience in the midst of one of New Mexico's great public open spaces.
The University will engage students, faculty, and staff in its comprehensive educational, research, and service programs.UNM will provide students the values, habits of mind, knowledge, and skills to be enlightened citizens, contribute to the state and national economies, and lead satisfying lives. Faculty, staff, and students create, apply, and disseminate new knowledge and creative works. They provide services that enhance New Mexicans' quality of life and promote economic development, and they advance our understanding of the world, its peoples, and cultures. Building on its educational, research, and creative resources, the University provides services directly to the City and State, including health care, social services, policy studies, commercialization of inventions, and cultural events.
The University of New Mexico offers a wide variety of academic programs through twelve Colleges and Schools. These educational options include more than 215 degree and certificate programs, including 94 baccalaureates, 71 masters, and 37 doctoral degrees.
We teach it. Create it. And embrace it. Art isn't just important to us here; it's a part of us. We let it into our hearts and allow it to stir our minds. It shapes our identity and even drives our economy. Look around. You'll see it, feel it and hear it everywhere.
Inclusive Excellence means that we are moving beyond "representational diversity" (which UNM has had for a long time) and integrating diversity and Excellence by bringing together diverse worldviews, diverse research ideas, and the ability to teach to multiple ways of learning and knowing. In building Inclusive Excellence, our students are better prepared to work and interact in a diverse world.
At the University of New Mexico and in the Division for Equity and Inclusion, we strive to make our campus a place where our students are free to explore their passions and pursuits and where discourse and debate are valued. In recent times the need to support our students, staff, and faculty is even more critical.
Through our departments, including ENLACE, the LGBTQ Resource Center, and the Men of Color Initiative, our Division often team up with the Division for Student Affairs and other partners to host events and provide resources centered on fostering an inclusive campus climate.
Campus Climate is defined as "the current attitudes, behaviors, and standards of faculty, staff, administrators and students concerning the level of respect for individual needs, abilities and potentials" by Susan Rankin, Pennsylvania State University Professor. Our goal is to shape all individuals' experiences and perceptions on campus, including all underrepresented groups – diversity, equity, inclusion, and culture to help create a more inclusive campus.
The University Libraries system on the central campus at UNM has the largest library collection in the state. There are extensive electronic and digital services that make it possible to use the library 24/7 from any location. The four libraries in the system are Zimmerman Library, Centennial Science and Engineering Library, Fine Arts and Design Library, and Parish Memorial Library. The Center for Southwest Research and Special Collections is nationally recognized for the quality of the collection.
The UNM Law Library is located on the north campus and supports the Law School. Law Library services are also available to New Mexico residents. The HSLIC is situated on the north campus and serves the Colleges of Pharmacy and Nursing and the School of Medicine, Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program, and Diagnostic & Therapeutic Sciences Programs.
UNM SHAC is located on the Main Campus north of Johnson Center and across the mall (east).SHAC provides quality health and counseling services to all UNM students to foster student success. Fees charged at SHAC are much lower than community rates. SHAC is funded in part by student activity fees.
The Office of the Vice President for Research and Economic Development provides various research‐related services and information for UNM faculty, researchers, and administrators.
That's the way we see us. We're a community of unique perspectives embracing divergence – unafraid to let our colors run and blend – allowing the very things that divide us become the things that connect us. What makes us different makes us strong – and a force to be reckoned with.
