The University of Louisiana at Monroe seeks students who find value in our programs and prepares them to compete, succeed, and contribute to an ever-changing global society through transformative education.
The University of Louisiana at Monroe will be recognized among the top 200 universities in the nation for excellence in teaching, research, and innovation, emphasizing the health sciences.
A great place to start learning about our academic programs, from accounting to toxicology. Multiple program areas are offering graduate and undergraduate degrees. The primary purposes of ULM are instruction, research, creative activity, and service. Degree programs are offered by the three Colleges and the Graduate School.
The higher education environment is changing. The Louisiana Board of Regents has recently implemented several new plans and procedures that modify how our state's universities approach higher education. Financial support from the state continues to decrease – rising tuition costs for students – and the emergence of for-profit online institutions creates new competition for our public, non-profit universities, and colleges. Throughout our history, the University of Louisiana at Monroe has provided quality education for all prospective students in northeastern Louisiana. However, new operating conditions require our mission to be redefined for the betterment of the community.
Our objective was to develop a roadmap to guide ULM to success over the next five years regardless of the environmental conditions we encounter. From the beginning, we wanted the redefinition of our university to be driven by information, especially from those whom the changes would affect. The planning committee collected this knowledge from various publicly available sources, from relevant reports and publications, and surveys answered by students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members.
The committee worked toward a new vision in line with the consensus by analyzing all the gathered information, though final authority rested with me as university president. A first draft was developed during a focused two-day meeting before presentation at eighteen stakeholder meetings, allowing all stakeholders to provide input.
Objectives to advance long-term strategies focus actions in the first year because we must act quickly in the current situation to "turn the ship," while annual updates will keep the plan relevant and up-to-date. The next step in this process requires division heads and their staff to develop the tactical steps necessary to realize our vision and meet our long-term objectives.
With the educational landscape continuing to shift, ULM has seized the opportunity to advance and has established a bold new vision. In this time of adaptation and renovation, we ask all students, alumni, parents, faculty, staff, community members, and friends to join us in our efforts and help ULM achieve its vision as a top-performing regional university.
The ULM Honors Program is a unique program that seeks intellectually curious students who desire to challenge themselves with new ideas and to work with similarly motivated students. The program is open to all majors and offers various options while working within the degree. Honors students are exposed to more in-depth topics and work closely with the Honors Faculty.
The University of Louisiana at Monroe has over 80 years of Student Success; that same commitment to student success is available online. ULM offers over 30-degree programs, resources, and a caring community to help you go the distance in school without traveling the distance to our campus. You are joining the Warhawk family and are an essential part of our student community, with access to all of our advisors, admissions counselors, and faculty. As an online student, you're a big part of ULM.
The World Languages program in the College of Arts, Education, and Sciences offers various study abroad opportunities to all University students. French students are eligible for scholarships to study in Belgium, France, and Canada for a month in the summer. Students may also apply to study for a semester or a year in France as part of the MICEFA program.
ULM also offers a two-week study abroad program in Montpelier, France. Students study mornings and take excursions to nearby sights in the afternoon. The Spanish program takes students to Mexico and Costa Rica. Students stay with families and study Spanish in Mérida and San José. When abroad, they also can participate in numerous excursions, including the Mayan ruins in Mexico and the rainforests in Costa Rica.
Students accepted as participants in the ULM-Mexico study abroad program spend two and a half weeks in Merida, a city with a population of close to one million people. Before leaving for Mexico, the students attend several hours of orientation classes over several months, designed to prepare them for the experience. The topics covered in the classes include various aspects of the region's history, customs, food, art, and architecture. The participants live with host families during their stay in Mexico, and they attend classes five days a week at the Centro de Idiomas del Sureste. In addition to taking classes, students participate in several excursions in and around the city of Merida. These include visits to museums, archaeological sites, and cultural events.
The ULM Scholarship Office assists students in searching for, awarding, and processing ULM scholarships. Specific scholarships are available only to incoming first-year students, while others are available to all ULM students who meet eligibility requirements.
