Indiana University–Purdue University Columbus serves those living and working in and around Columbus, Indiana.IUPUC offers 11 undergraduate and two graduate degrees. IUPUI is dedicated to doing its part in creating a sustainable future. As a result of its initiatives, the campus has received the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education's AASHE STARS designation. Faculty from the IU School of Medicine is leading a Grand Challenge in precision health medicine. The team will build on IU's legacy of biomedical breakthroughs to transform health by applying research results. Community engagement is an integral part of the IUPUI curriculum. The campus won the 2018 Engaged Campus of the Year award from the Indiana Campus Compact for its efforts.
IUPUI can trace its roots back to 1891 when Indiana University offered classes in Indianapolis for the very first time. In the decades that followed, both IU and Purdue proved themselves dedicated to providing higher education opportunities in Indianapolis, offering programs in the liberal arts, medicine, and more. However, the two universities operated independently until mayor Richard Lugar called for "a great state university in Indianapolis" in 1968. As a result, Indiana University and Purdue University merged their many programs and schools to create IUPUI in 1969. Since then, IUPUI has come into its own, becoming Indiana's premier urban research university.
