Greenville University teacher candidates will create classroom environments that promote cooperation and responsibility, support self-worth, affirm all students' dignity, and stimulate learning. The Greenville University Teacher Education has a specific vision of the attributes and skills that a teacher candidate will possess as a program completer. We envision that the Teacher Education Program will produce teacher candidates who have a strong professional knowledge base of content, students, and pedagogy. They will utilize this knowledge base to inform and assess their instructional and decision-making and problem-solving in a complex, dynamic classroom environment. The School of Education is accredited nationally through the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC/CAEP) and locally with the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE).

Like business students everywhere, our students graduate with a depth of business knowledge. However, a Briner student's competitive edge is the amount of resume-building experience they engaged in during their time with us. The Briner School of business prioritizes applied and experiential learning. Our experience-based curriculum, called Experience First, is designed to expose students to the real world of business. Experience First courses develop a student's entrepreneurial spirit, provide connections to current business leaders, and prepare them for their Experience First Capstone course. The capstone pairs students with business leaders to complete a current, high stakes project.
The Briner School of Business was named for Greenville University alumnus Bob Briner '56, acclaimed author and Emmy award-winning pioneer in sports broadcasting. Throughout his career, he maintained the belief that Christians, specifically those in the business world, are called salt and light in every corner of culture. We echo this belief and affirm the great need in today's marketplace for competent business leaders of high character. We deliver a Christ-centered curriculum that challenges business students to become salt and light in the business world, whether they become CEOs or entrepreneurs.
Greenville University (formerly Greenville College) was founded in 1892 by the Free Methodist Church to provide an outstanding, Christ-centered university education for men and women. The university's first president, Wilson T. Hogue, used the motto "education for the character" to describe the university's purpose. Its mission 125 years later - empowering students for lives of character and service - echoes that purpose.
For 150 years, the Greenville College campus has been the scene of Christian higher education. In the mid-nineteenth century, Stephen Morse moved from New Hampshire to Greenville, where he met and married Almira Blanchard. In 1855, he established a college for women, supported by his wife's inheritance and named in her honor. Almira College was affiliated with the Baptist church and educated young women under the leadership of John B. White, a classmate of Morse at Brown University. After 23 years, ownership passed to James Park Slade, who maintained the affiliation but changed the College to a co-educational institution.
Starting with the first graduate in 1898, Greenville College now averages 450 graduates each year at Commencement. The quality of our graduates is made clear in their accomplishments. An unusually high proportion has gone on to earn doctorates. Alumni serve with distinction in significant professions in government, business, the church, Christian missions, and as faculty of major universities and colleges.
