The Baruch College Archives collects and preserves records that document the history, mission, and daily functioning of Baruch College and materials about people, activities, and events associated with the College. Also, the archives are responsible for keeping and maintaining several special collections unique to Baruch College and physically housed in the archives. The Zicklin School of Business, the largest accredited collegiate school of business in the United States, offering nationally-ranked undergraduate and graduate programs.The Marxe School of Public and International Affairs, which is widely recognized in municipal government, nonprofit and educational administration, and policy analysis and evaluation.The Weissman School of Arts and Sciences, which offers more than 40 areas of study, including ad-hoc majors and minors. The Division of Continuing and Professional Studies also offers nondegree and certificate programs.
Located in the world's arts capital, Baruch College attracts an array of talent to its campus. Through the Weissman School of Arts and Sciences, the College offers degree programs in fine and performing arts, journalism and creative writing, and comparative literature. The Lawrence N. Field Center for Entrepreneurship houses Maker Hub, Baruch's resident maker space for technology, design, and entrepreneurship. Partnerships with New York City institutions such as the Rubin Museum of Art and other external arts programs provide enhanced coursework for our students. We are bringing the Arts to Baruch.
Baruch Performing Arts Center presents and hosts the creation of theater, dance, music, film, and discussion by world-class artists and thinkers. Serving Baruch, the neighborhood, and New York audiences, the Alexander String Quartet, Urban Bush Women, Vince Giordano, and the Nighthawks, writer Teju Cole, and Gloria Steinem have been seen on BPAC's five stages. The Sidney Mishkin Gallery, which has offered small, museum-quality shows for over 25 years, mounts five exhibits annually. The Sidney Harman Writer-in-Residence Program brings distinguished writers to the Baruch College campus every semester, including poets, playwrights, novelists, journalists, and essayists.
If you have ever wanted to be a "History Detective," the Library Department offers a course entitled "Archives, Documents and Hidden History," designed to provide students with an overview of archival research. The course includes visits to museums, historical societies, and galleries and includes exciting primary source research examples.
The archival program at the William and Anita Newman Library began on October 27, 1988. The library mission statement identifies the archives as "the official repository of the College's institutional history." To fulfill this mission, the Baruch College Archives collects, describes, and preserves records generated by administrative, faculty, and staff offices of Baruch College, excluding records produced by the registrar, personnel office, and business offices.
The materials that the archives make available for access include the Chancellor's Reports, University Reports, Minutes of the Board of Trustees, reports and minutes of the general faculty and faculty bodies such as faculty councils, policy statements, reports, and memoranda from the president, deans, and other college administrators, college catalogs, publicity releases, in-house publications, ephemera, alumni materials, Baruch College Working Papers, videos and films of key Baruch College events, and CUNY reports and documents containing Baruch information. The archives depend on the transfer of materials from the College's academic and administrative offices and the gifts of alumni, faculty, and friends.
