The Center for Academic Excellence exists to provide a supportive academic environment for students on Asbury University's campus. Through peer tutoring and other resources and services, students are given support for particular classes, writing needs, or other academic concerns and are taught skills to become confident, independent learners. The Center for Academic Excellence has three divisions of services: the Writing Center, Tutoring Services, and Academic Accessibility Resources. All of the services that are offered are provided free of charge to undergraduate and graduate students.
Academic excellence and spiritual vitality are the foundations upon which Asbury University has been built and continues to grow. They are embedded in our very mission statement and guide every goal and decision made at Asbury.
The Cornerstone Project was a natural outgrowth of our commitment to spiritual vitality. Because our Christian faith plays an essential role in our identity as a liberal arts institution, we take our responsibility to assess student spiritual outcomes seriously. We are exceedingly aware of the extraordinary challenges, and indeed hubris, in attempting to assess such ethereal matters as spirituality surely only God the Father, Son, and Spirit genuinely understand the heart and motives of a believer.
However, it is our responsibility as educators and followers of Christ to humbly attempt to assess our students' spiritual vitality by the best available means possible. We fully realize that, in so doing, it is only possible to capture a partial and incomplete understanding at best. However, for many reasons, we are compelled to continue trying to assess our students' spiritual formation.
As the world rapidly adopts communication technology, there will be an increasing need for people who understand other cultures and fluently communicate across borders and boundaries. This emphasis area prepares future communicators to understand the difficulties inherent in intercultural communication and overcome them through wise communication practices. Many students select this emphasis area because they want to do international business, work in government or politics, or wish to do ministry abroad to include being missionaries, serving with disaster relief organizations, or working in translation/linguistic career fields.
The Kinlaw Library in Wilmore was completed in 2001 and contained over 150,000 items in several collections of material. The Library is comprised of three floors, with most of the Library collections on the Main and Top floors. Computer classrooms are on the lower floor. There are network connections at all of the study tables, carrels, and study rooms. Study space makes up the most significant portion of the total 72,000 square feet in this building, including 18 study carrels, 10 group study rooms, six individual study rooms, 40 study tables, and more than 30 individual comfortable chairs provide over 250 places for everyone to choose from. We have added six individual high tech study pods on the main floor. There is now a more casual seating space in the middle of the main floor.
The University seeks to expand students' horizons outward to understand the history and value of other peoples and cultures, and prepares them for involvement in a complex and changing global reality. Through the Global Engagement Office, we seek to offer curricular and co-curricular opportunities that will challenge students to increase cultural sensitivity and awareness. They develop cross-cultural competencies to serve Christ in a global society effectively.
We see a world today that is bigger and smaller as events and cultures we hardly knew existed just a few years ago are now downloaded into our pockets instantly. Diversity in language, culture, beliefs, and backgrounds is no longer a world away, but many of the time, it is right outside of our doorsteps. Thus, we want to prepare our students for an increasingly diverse and globalized world. More importantly, we belong to a global church, and we want better to reflect the reality of the Kingdom of God.
As the Global Engagement Office, our desire is for our students to reflect Christ-like empathy and humility as they engage different cultures and advance Christ's cause around the world. Through studies, travels, and service in cultures other than their own, we want to encourage and provide students opportunities to work toward cultural engagement and a global perspective. Ultimately, we want to equip students to live and work faithfully and fruitfully no matter where God calls them to serve.
