From the University foundation until the academic year 2017/2018, 68408 students have graduated from the University of Niš, 1350 of them being foreign citizens, while 3819 postgraduates acquired their magister degrees and 2128 candidates, including 45 foreigners, defended their doctoral dissertations. Relying on a half-century tradition built upon the knowledge, work, energy, and enthusiasm of previous generations of visionaries of the present and future academic community which has cultivated the intellectual elite not only in this part of Serbia but also in the whole region, we are honored, but we also have a great responsibility to continue and to follow the road paved by the best among us. It is not easy to follow this road. However, it is the only possible one if you strive towards consistency, prosperity, and a more secure future by respecting the dignified past and following the directions imposed by the needs of the modern way of life.
With its 13 faculties, the university represents a robust intellectual basis for developing and establishing a partnership with relevant economic entities and local government and international institutions. We establish and strengthen a network whose primary goal is student mobilities, knowledge transfer, and modern technologies to establish and strengthen a network whose primary goal is to cherish the established collaboration and build new bridges of cooperation with universities, research centers, and multinational companies.
Students of the University of Niš, now distinguished scholars and teachers with the highest professional titles at prestigious universities, recognized researchers in the global scientific community, are the genuine reference of our higher education institution and good role models for young academics. They have proved that impressive results can be achieved with optimal use of modern modes of studying and personal commitment, which certainly implies good outcomes. The present moment is a vital link between the first half-century and the rest of the University of Niš that is to be written by the forthcoming generations. That link must be reliable, which will preserve the honorable past and provide a secure future. We sincerely hope that we are capable enough to cope with these responsibilities.
In conformity with the Law on Higher Education, and the Statute adopted by the University of Niš, the types and degrees of studies were defined at the University of Niš, and the European Credit Transfer (ECTS) was introduced. Higher Education activity is carried out through academic and professional studies.
First degree studies at the University of Niš are organized as necessary academic studies and basic professional studies. Second-degree studies at the University of Niš are organized as master academic studies, integrated academic and specialist academic studies. The University of Niš offers third-degree studies – Doctoral academic studies. In line with the higher education reform that was initiated by the Law on Higher Education, the University of Niš and its faculties have conducted intensive activities on the adoption of new study programs in order to increase the attractiveness of the contents offered to students and thereby increase the interest of young people to study at the University of Niš. The University of Niš was accredited in February 2009 for the first time, in the third cycle of accreditation of higher education institutions in Serbia, together with the Universities of Belgrade and Novi Sad. In August 2010, the first master's academic study program at the University of Niš was accredited under the title "Multimedia Technologies in Technical and Technological Sciences in the field of Electrical & Computer Engineering" to enroll 32 students the premises of the University main building.
The University of Niš maintains rich bilateral and multilateral collaboration with many academic and research institutions and associations from the country and abroad. Close links with foreign partners are kept through the membership in various international and interuniversity associations, through international programs and projects, or based on contracts on direct collaboration. The University of Niš is the first R&D organization in Serbia to receive the HR Excellence in Research Award by the European Commission. The award is a recognition of the University of Niš to endorse, support, and implement the fundamental principles of The European Charter & Code for Researchers (Charter and Code for researchers). Charter and Code is a recommendation of good practice for researchers and employers and researchers' funders issued by the European Commission. It sketches researchers' rights and duties and their funding institutions and outlines principles for hiring and appointing researchers.
