Its principal activities in higher education and scientific research are activities of public interest, and they are carried out under the legal regulations. The University of Belgrade celebrates September 13 as its day. This was the date when lessons started at the first Higher School, founded by Dositej Obradovic.

In the scope of their activities, higher education institutions within the University of Belgrade have the right and obligation to use the name, Coat of Arms, and the flag of the University and incorporate them into their symbols, either in part or in entirety. The University of Belgrade celebrates September 13 as its anniversary, in remembrance of the day when lectures started at the College in Belgrade in 1808.
