The University of Arts in Belgrade was founded in 1957 as an association of four art faculties: the Faculty of Music, the Faculty of Fine Arts, the Faculty of Applied Arts, and the Faculty of Dramatic Arts. Today, it comprises 2.700 students, more than 470 professors, and 70 study programs in diverse arts disciplines, on undergraduate, master, and doctoral levels. To be recognized as a staging ground for new ideas, the University of Arts has developed specific ways of focusing and directing arts education, unifying artistic and theoretical research, and providing a platform for interdisciplinary research. Recently launched practice-based doctoral programs in arts make the University of Arts an exceptional higher education institution in the Region.
Connecting traditional experience with contemporary innovations, the University of Arts achieves the highest goals, holding onto fruitful principles: strict selection and a small number of students, teaching process intertwined with the professional sector, mentorship, and the fact that most of the teachers are at the same time, prominent artists. At the University of Arts, young people's talent and creativity are transformed into artistic careers. Students are directed towards their future professions and trained for future artistic practice. Our alumni are well-known artists and leaders in diverse institutions of art and culture.
The University of Arts has profoundly influenced the development of culture and art in our country and the whole Region. Being the torchbearer of artistic life, the University of Arts has a decisive contribution in setting up artistic criteria and supporting other outstanding art faculties in the Region. The bridge connecting artistic practice and theory, individual and group artistic creation, professionalism, and artistic freedom and endeavors to connect different artistic and theoretical disciplines in a multidisciplinary way, represent the essential teaching distinctiveness of the University of Arts and ensure its high position among related institutions.
More than anything else, the University of Arts is about people, its students, and professors – the most talented, creative, dedicated, and worthy individuals. This is why our vision encompasses all our student's and professors' distinctive personal and individual vision in their endeavor to reach their full potential as artists and scientists. Our mission is to make sure that the UniversityUniversity remains the place where this vision becomes a reality. In the coming years, we will continually strive to overcome the faculties' existing isolation and further improve cooperation in joint artistic and scientific-research projects. We will also encourage new study programs based on the synthesis or interweaving of classical artistic disciplines, enabling internal student mobility, a broader and more diverse range of elective subjects, and, ultimately, become the integrated UniversityUniversity as recognized by the European education system.
In the coming period, we will also promote the international visibility of the UniversityUniversity as the leading national and regional Center for artistic education and coordinate development activities with the initiatives of cultural and creative policies in Europe. This would ultimately result in the increased mobility of both students and teachers. To keep up with the times ahead, we are ready to support more innovative curricula in line with society's cultural and technological changes and requirements. This means that the study programs' learning outcomes will be recognized by society as a whole and contribute to acquiring competencies essential for further professional development.
Bearing in mind the decades-long development of scientific research at the theory departments, in the scientific institutes of the faculty, and participation in domestic and international scientific projects, we respect our teachers, associates, and students' noteworthy results and emphasize the importance of promoting this activity. Since the academic community of UniversityUniversity and its scientific research work are recognized as an essential segment of the University of Arts affirmation internationally, it is necessary to support further and stimulate future research and participation in domestic and international projects. As creativity and research in the field of contemporary art have been inseparable for some time, we believe that a more creative approach to the curricula and teaching process will support and inspire the model of artists who act both as creators and theoreticians – artists who express their creative being through artistic practice, while contemplating and searching for new artistic expressions and more challenging levels of action.
The successful development of the UniversityUniversity is conditioned by students' participation in the work of university bodies and the engagement of their representatives in the decision-making process. We will continue the tradition of partnership with students and build our future strategies by respecting their opinion. By establishing the Center for Career Guidance, we will continue to improve the prospects for student employment. The Center will provide counseling and other kinds of help to get the students involved in professional life and translating their knowledge and skills into successful careers. Likewise, our goal is to strengthen ties with former students of the University of Arts, both from the country and abroad, utilizing launching alumni associations. In the years to come, the University of Arts will continue to pursue its mission and provide everyone with equal opportunities and the best of education.
