Aichi University of the Arts was founded on April 1, 1966, to create a distinctive cultural sphere in the middle part of Japan, the Chubu Region. This foundation was responding to the Region's industrial economic growth centering in Aichi Prefecture. Additionally, the university's graduate school for a master's degree was established four years later, on April 1, 1970, to enrich culture and society through advanced, in-depth research for cultural theory and application. On April 1, 2009, the graduate school began to offer a doctoral program.
The Aichi University of the Arts invites artists from around Japan and overseas to its campus as Artists in Residence to collaborate on educational, performance, and creative activities. By inviting various working artists (both individuals and groups), we aim to encourage exchanges with our faculty and students that will result in fresh educational and research perspectives and invigorate our campus.
Commonly found in universities, museums, and orchestras in the West, such residence programs provide the invited artists with a place to explore their creative practice in new contexts. The residence artists give workshops and present or recite new ideas and works that differ significantly from the university's regular curriculum. A significant feature of our university's Artist-in-Residence Program has shared spaces for daily activities, which encourages close exchange among artists, faculty, and students.
Created and run by the Center for Promoting Fine Arts and Music, the Artist-in-Residence Program contributes significantly to the university's medium-term plan core objectives of international exchange, strengthening partnerships with other educational organizations, and enhancement of cross-disciplinary education at the university.
AUA has a duty as a lighthouse for arts. Various ships traverse the open sea of art, confirm their present location, and chart a course by referring to the lighthouse's beacon light. Some ships may sail east; some may sail West, some may soar up into the sky or dive in deep water. There is no correct and exact answer in art as many new forms of art may be born as the number of aspiring artists. AUA watches over the birth of new art as it is.
While aiming to nurture the art of the highest international standard, AUA is expected to continue its efforts to broaden the base for the arts and increase the number of art fans. To meet this requirement, AUA must promote artistic exchange and collaboration with various fields. When art is nurtured to be the best and utilized for society, the stimulus of utilization deepens art in one aspect. Although new stimuli, like a double-edged sword, are also accompanied by pain, such as the nature of creation. Just as this is the case in all healthy activities of the society, art is no exception. Art is an ongoing adventure where there are no new ideas; there are no fresh and attractive musical performances or artworks. Let us have the encouragement to knock on new doors and accept new challenges.
