    In 2014, the University of Patras celebrated 50 years of Academic operation, marked by continuous development and continually emerging new achievements. The University presently stands well ahead of its original goal, which was to set "a firm model of an Academic institution providing Greece with a highly qualified Alumnae contributing to the society's development and growth." Today, the University of Patras enjoys recognition as an Academic Institution with a worldwide impact, attracting thousands of students and many Academic and Research Personnel actively involved in cutting-of-edge Science, Innovation, and Excellence.
    The University of Patras was founded in Patras in 1964, and it began functioning in the Academic year 1966-67. The establishment of the University contributed vastly to the decentralization of Academic Education in Greece. In June 2013, the University of Western Greece was incorporated into the University of Patras.
    The University is a two-city campus, situated in both Patras and Agrinion. The campus in Patras is located in the suburb of Rion. It is a self-contained campus located at the foot of mount Panachaico with a view over the Gulf of Corinth and the mountains of Central Greece across the water.
    The University has a specific corporate identity and logo, under the auspices of which university publications and a monthly magazine @UP are published.
    The University is a two-city campus, situated both in Patras and Agrinion. The campus in Patras is located 12 km East of the city of Patras, in the suburb Rion, covering a vast area of 2.656 acres. The campus is a self-contained campus located at the foot of Mount Panachaico with a view over the Gulf of Corinth and the mountains of Central Greece across the water.
    The University of Patras is the third largest University in Greece regarding student potential, the Faculty Members, Administrative Personnel, number of departments, and accredited student titles.
    The University of Patras includes 24 Departments, with many sectors and consequently a great range of disciplines, which operate 112 laboratories and 14 fully equipped clinics.
    The University of Patras has 28,727 Undergraduate and 3,959 Postgraduate students, 727 faculty members, 146 Teaching and Technical staff, and 457 Administrative Personnel. (data of September 2013)
    Besides its distinguished path in education, the University of Patras has excelled in the fields of Basic and Applied Research. The University of Patras has acquired international prominence for pioneering broad-ranging Research in Environment, Health, Biotechnology, Mechanics, Electronics, Informatics, and Basic Science. A number of the Departments, Laboratories, and Clinics have been designated as Centres of Excellence based on International Assessment. The University of Patras has a reputation for quality and innovative Research and presents effective participation in a plethora of Research Projects, Scientific Organizations, and Research Groups.
    With its educational and Research work, the University of Patras' rich campus life attracts many candidate students every year as their first and foremost choice for their Higher Degree studies.
    The University of Patras was founded in the city of Patras on the 11th of November in 1964 as a self-administered Academic Institution under the Greek Government's supervision. The University was established primarily to concentrate on science, technology, economics, business administration, and social sciences.
    The proposal for a new University, which was the result of an International Conference in August 1964, it was decided that the role of the University of Patras was to set an example of a highly qualified Institution of Higher Education, serving as a stimulus for the modernization of the entire Greek Higher Education System, with priority given to the fields where highly trained personnel would be needed for the realization of the economic development of the country.
    The opening of the University of Patras took place on the 30th of November 1966, when Patras's city celebrates its Patron "Saint Andrew." This is the reason that the emblem of the University is an X cross, which symbolizes the one on which St. Andrew was crucified
    In the beginning, the administration of the University was given to a Management Committee. The first Management Committee was appointed on the 9th of January 1965, having its chair in Athens. After a short period, the chair of the Committee was transferred to Patras. This Committee ceased functioning in 1974 when new policies concerning the administration of the Universities were established, resulting in the formation of the first Senate of the University of Patras consisted of elected Professors from the University of Patras. The Senate held the term of office for one year.
    During the last 50 years from the establishment of the University of Patras and up until the present day, many commendable Academics have become members of the University of Patras's Rectorate Authorities. Presently, the University of Patras remains one of the best well-known Universities in Greece with an excellent reputation amongst the International and European Scientific Community, which justifies the vision and mission for establishing the University of Patras.
