The University of Veterinary and Pharmaceutical Sciences Brno is the only university in the Czech Republic specializing in veterinary medicine, veterinary hygiene and ecology, and just one of two that teaches pharmaceutical science. It can be found within the City of Brno in the city district of Brno - Královo Pole.
The university campus is situated on unique premises with a distinctive atmosphere created by the building's enclosed spatial layout. It combines the character of 19th-century structures with modern buildings from the past years. The park, with its mature trees, adds to the campus atmosphere. The university campus also features a greenhouse, botanical gardens, and certain rare or unusual species of trees, such as the London Planetree of the majestic European Beech, entered into a contest for Brno's prettiest tree.
At the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, education occurs within the framework of the Master's degree program of Veterinary Medicine in the Czech and English language. The study is full-time. The standard length of study is six years. At the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, a Doctor's degree program is offered in 14 selected veterinary medicine fields in the Czech language and five fields in English. The entrance exams are comprised of an interview with the applicant, in which the potential student's prospects for scientific work are mainly verified. The standard length of study is four years. Studies end with a state Doctoral exam and a Doctoral thesis. Graduates are awarded the academic title of "Doctor" (abbreviated "Ph.D., listed in front of one's name). Lifelong Learning occurs within the framework of the Third Age university degree program in the domain known as Man and Animal. The standard study period lasts two years. Lifelong Learning is also further implemented as a portion of educational courses mainly for practicing veterinarians.
The Faculty of Veterinary Hygiene and Ecology offers Bachelor's degree programs, a post-graduate Master's degree program, Master's and Doctor's degree programs, as well as Lifelong Learning programs. Bachelor studies are conducted within the framework of the Bachelor's degree program in the field of Food Safety and Quality and the field of Animal Protection and Welfare, both in Czech and English language. The standard length of study is three years. Studies are completed by taking a state final exam, and graduates are bestowed with the title of "Bachelor" (abbreviated "Bc.", listed before one's name). The study can be full-time and combined.
Master studies are conducted within the framework of the Master's degree program in the field of Veterinary Hygiene and Ecology in the languages of Czech and English. The standard length of study is six years. The study is full-time. Studies include the entire spectrum of veterinary medicine. However, they are strongly oriented towards food-producing animals, mainly cattle, pigs, and fowl, towards the production of foods of an animal origin, hygienic and health safety of foods, and towards supervision over the safety of these foods.
Studies end with a rigorous state exam comprised of component tests from milk hygiene and technology, from veterinary protection of public health, from animal diseases and legislation, and clinical tests of ruminant and swine diseases. Graduates are bestowed with the title of "Doctor of Veterinary Medicine" (abbreviated "MVDr", listed before one's name). Graduates find work in state bodies of veterinary administration through veterinary supervision and control of foods of animal origin, in diagnostics laboratories, and also in food production companies.
Doctoral studies are conducted within the framework of the Doctor's degree program of Veterinary Hygiene and Ecology in 7 fields in the Czech language and five fields in English. The Faculty of Pharmacy enables Master's and Doctoral studies and takes part in Lifelong Learning. Master's studies are conducted within the framework of the Master's degree program in the field of Pharmacy in the languages of Czech and English language. The standard length of study is five years. The study is full-time. Studies include subjects from the group of basic sciences, mainly focusing on biology and chemistry, and subjects connected with human health, and subjects from the domain of pharmaceutical-oriented subjects, dealing with natural drugs, chemical drugs, and drug technology pharmacology and toxicology, and social Pharmacy. Doctoral studies are conducted within the framework of the Doctor's degree program of Pharmacy in 4 areas taught in the Czech language. Entrance exams take the form of an interview with the applicant, in which mainly the potential student's prospects for scientific work are verified. The standard length in the field of Pharmaceutical Chemistry is four years, three years for all others. Studies conclude with a state Doctoral exam and defense of a Doctoral thesis. Graduates are awarded the academic title of "Doctor" (abbreviated "Ph.D., listed in front of one's name).
The rector is the head of the University of Veterinary and Pharmaceutical Sciences Brno. Subordinate to the rector is three vice-rectors - vice-rector for education, vice-rector for science, research and foreign relations, and the vice-rector for strategy and development of VFU Brno. The bursar handles the economic affairs, and the chancellor manages the administrative dealings of the university. The University Academic Senate provides Self-governance at the university. The university body is the VFU Brno Board of Supervisors. Issues concerning education and scientific activity are discussed in the University Scientific Council.
The university is divided into the Rectorate, including the Rector's Office and other working locations, and three faculties- the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Faculty of Veterinary Hygiene and Ecology, and the Faculty of Pharmacy.
