Algoma University is located in the heart of the Great Lakes in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. With 1,400 students, we are the smallest university in Ontario and the only post-secondary institution strictly for undergraduate students.
Established in 1965 as Algoma University College, an affiliate of Laurentian University, we have been educating the people of Northern Ontario for over 50 years. In 2008, we were granted our charter, becoming an independent degree-granting institution.
We offer over 30 different academic programs, spanning the liberal arts, sciences, and professional disciplines. All of our programs offer undergraduate research opportunities and hands-on learning. Classes are capped at 75 students, even in the first year, meaning that you have more one-on-one interactions with our knowledgeable and caring faculty. Our faculty will know you on a first-name basis and work hard to make your dreams a success, both inside and outside the classroom. Personal attention and a commitment to your success are the cornerstones of an Algoma degree.
As a partner with Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig (SKG), we have a special mission to cultivate cross-cultural learning between Anishinaabe (First Nations, Métis, and Inuit) populations and other communities in Northern Ontario. Thirteen percent of our students self-identify as Anishinaabe, and another 23 percent come from outside of Canada, giving Algoma U one of the most diverse campuses in Ontario. We embrace and foster diversity and value differing perspectives.
Former students of the Shingwauk Residential School formed the Children of Shingwauk Alumni Association and have helped guide the development of education on the Shingwauk site. A provincial trust, the Shingwauk Education Trust, gives ownership of a portion of the site to Anishinaabek people, and Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig (SKG) has developed as an Anishinaabek institution for university studies on the site. Algoma signed a Covenant (PDF) in 2006 with SKG to work together for the benefit of all students of Algoma and Shingwauk.
Algoma University is proud to be home to the Algoma University Thunderbirds Varsity Athletics Program and Boomer the Thunderbolt. Our student-athletes participate in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) and Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) conferences, allowing them to compete in the highest level of the sport in Canada.
