About Me

  1. Virginia Episcopal School is an engaging community that guides students to strive Towards Full Stature in their academic, ethical, spiritual, and personal growth. VES is an intentionally small, globally diverse educational community dedicated to excellence in student engagement, innovative learning, and faculty support and growth. We aim to be the best small boarding school in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast regions. VES is an intentionally small college preparatory school serving young men and women in grades 9–12. With a vibrant mix of 260 days (30%) and boarding (70%) students from 18 countries and nine states plus Washington, DC, our campus is a meeting place for diverse perspectives and global cultures where students learn from and respect each other. The student body is 54% male, 46% female, 20% international students, and 28% of students of color. VES is an inclusive, welcoming community of students who are curious, smart, funny, kind, and innovative—the next generation of creators and producers with the power to change the world. We have 40 full-time teaching faculty—68% with advanced degrees and 13% of whom hold PhDs. The faculty-to-student ratio is 5:1, with an average class size of 11. Faculty serve not only as teachers but also as advisors, coaches, mentors, and activity directors. Making this community incredibly tight-knit, 84% of faculty live on campus. Students enjoy the accessibility to faculty, the family environment, watching faculty kids grow up, and playing with the many pets that are also part of our community. With a robust foundation, VES students are equipped to excel. The 1923–24 session produced the first Harvard-bound alumnus. Since then, VES graduates have attended many of the world’s finest colleges and universities, and most importantly, they find the programs that best match their personal and professional goals. Students attend a range of institutions, including Stanford, Yale, Wellesley, MIT, Georgia Tech, Duke University, Occidental College, the University of California, New York University, UVA, The College of William & Mary, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Wake Forest University, Sewanee: The University of the South, James Madison University, Hampden-Sydney and the University of Georgia. The VES academic curriculum delivers all of the courses you expect in English, History, Science, Math, and World Languages, including 16 AP classes and post-AP options in several academic departments, such as our Science and Math Advanced Consortium, Multivariable Calculus, and Spanish VI. We also offer an innovative four-year Computer Science program and Arts courses such as Video Production, Public Speaking, Technical Theater, Jazz Ensemble, Glee Club, and other subjects that will stretch your creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication skills. You will build connections across subject areas through our interdisciplinary humanities work in the ninth and tenth grades and unique English and History electives. And in your senior year, you can apply to the Advanced Studies program, where you will complete a project in an academic discipline of your choice (or work in multiple disciplines—we love that!). A faculty mentor will support you as you engage in independent research while producing work to share with and beyond the VES community. Our faculty builds project-based learning into each of their classes to help you develop the skills needed to solve real-world problems, find innovative solutions, and work collaboratively with peers. You will see that VES teachers use a wide variety of activities and approaches to keep class time dynamic and engaging, making sure to reach and understand each student. And our teachers are committed to being accessible for extra help and support. Globally minded VES students rise early for the opportunity to connect with peer students who live in Gaza, Palestine. With all eyes affixed to the video screen, students on both ends of the world ask questions and listen intently to learn about cultural differences and similarities. They discuss the environment, favorite foods, where they travel, what the schools and classes are like, what they do for fun, religious aspects of their daily lives, politics, and more. Our VES partnership with the Global Nomads Youth Talk Program is just one of many global initiatives at VES that enable students to build cross-cultural understanding, empathy, and respect while becoming genuinely engaged global citizens. Concentrations are central to Southern Virginia's efforts to launch our students into careers or graduate school. These programs are designed to connect the training students get in their majors and core courses to specific skills and experiences they will use after college. Concentrations contain a small number of required and suggested courses and a required internship or practical experience. Moreover, advisors for each concentration work closely with individual students to guide and personalize the experience according to their specific interests, needs, and goals. Every student receives one-on-one career counseling to help create a resume and a job search strategy. Career counselors build relationships with potential employers to give students a leg up on the job market. At Southern Virginia, career counselors get to know students. Students and counselors work together to develop a plan to strengthen their resumes and find success after graduation. Students should meet with the career center at least once a year and even more frequently as they approach graduation. Schedule meetings on the Knight App. Our liberal arts plus education combines the critical thinking and communications skills of the liberal arts with specialized career training to make you uniquely valuable to potential employers and investors. The experience provides a powerful career preparation. Career counselors network with organizations and employers to provide students and graduates meaningful internship opportunities that will prepare them with experience and connections. We strive to provide an inclusive, fun, and faith-supportive campus environment for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and like-minded students. The defining feature of our educational model is a commitment to the teachings of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Classroom discussions are informed not only by textbooks and the best of secular thinking but also by scripture and the teachings of Church leaders. Gospel principles are at the center of everything we do. Southern Virginia University's mission is to prepare leader-servants in the workplace and the world, community, Church, and the home. To this end, we encourage our students to get involved in organized service both on and off-campus. In the classroom, on stage, or in the practice field, our students exemplify what it means to lose themselves in something greater than themselves.
  3. In 1819, Thomas Jefferson founded the University of Virginia and inaugurated a bold experiment – a public university designed to advance human knowledge, educate leaders, and cultivate an informed citizenry. Two centuries later, Jefferson's vision thrives. Across Grounds - and throughout the world - UVA students, faculty, staff, and alumni challenge convention, break barriers, and pursue the greater good. The University of Virginia is an iconic public institution of higher education, boasting nationally ranked schools and programs, distinguished faculty, a major academic medical center, and proud history as a renowned research university. The University's community and culture are enriched by active student self-governance, sustained commitment to the arts, and a robust NCAA Division 1 Athletics program. UVA students learn in an environment of honor, self-governance, diversity, affordability, service, and classical architecture. They emerge as intellectually curious leaders who conduct themselves with integrity. Among the top 25 U.S. campuses for students studying abroad, UVA makes global cultures and issues central to its curriculum. We have several global research centers and a worldwide presence, partnering with international universities and governments to educate students and solve societal challenges. The University's medical center represents one half of our total annual budget and leads UVA forward in many research areas. We are currently entering into arrangements with other medical service providers to intensify our focus on the most acute care patients and further develop our research and clinical capabilities. The University of Virginia heads into its third century with a strong financial foundation. This includes an endowment of approximately $7.6 billion that yields $190 million in annual endowment contributions. Also, the University's Strategic Investment Fund provides an additional $100 million annually for research and other strategic investments. The Board of Visitors fully supports the ninth President, James E. Ryan, in his university leadership in its third century. Working to attain shared ambitions that advance UVA, the Board cultivates a robust relationship with the President and ensures a successful partnership. UVA was founded on questioning convention, to expand understanding, and to harness the "useful sciences" as a means to advance society. Two centuries later, as a major research institution, we continue to uphold the ideals that made us unique among universities: our pursuit of discovery through collaboration and cross-disciplinary exploration. With core investments in strengthening our research capabilities, UVA is focusing research on intellectual and social challenges where it can have the most impact. As part of this effort, the University is developing several cross-disciplinary institutes and initiatives that address complex challenges that provide valuable educational and research opportunities and generate scholarship and research with a measurable impact. These initiatives align with societal needs and create new knowledge that produces unanticipated technologies and innovative ideas. The University has attracted a vibrant and capable new leadership team possessing enormous talent, energy, and creativity. These leaders are united in their efforts to sustain and further advance the University's highest aspirations as one of the world's genuinely remarkable institutions of higher learning. UVA researchers focus on intellectual and societal challenges that impact the greater good, creating new knowledge that moves the world forward. As part of this pursuit, the University is committed to increasing its research portfolio by more than $500 million annually over the next seven years. One example: the medical center's NIH funding surged from $101MM to $126MM in 2016. UVA provides a world-class education to talented students who meet our rigorous standards. We accept students solely on academic merit through our financial aid model, cover 100% of financial need, and limit debt. One of two public universities using this approach offers robust student scholarship support while protecting against excessive student debt – because we believe a world-class education should be affordable to all. UVA serves as a powerful engine for the Commonwealth, either directly or indirectly supporting one in every 76 jobs in the state and generating nearly $6 billion in annual economic impact. The University generates hundreds of millions in tax revenue for local governments, and its faculty, staff, and students contribute thousands of volunteer hours to local charities. The University was established as an Academical Village where expertise would freely pass between disciplines. Collaboration among all disciplines, schools, centers, and campuses remains a central priority. Like many universities, UVA is experiencing the generational turnover of faculty. With accomplished professors – many of whom solidified UVA's academic prestige – nearing retirement, UVA dedicates significant effort to recruiting a diverse new generation of scholars. Established in 2016, the Strategic Investment Fund supports initiatives that can transform a critical area of knowledge or operation within the University. Parsed into four focus areas, it funds research, research infrastructure, academic experience, and access and affordability. When Jefferson founded UVA in 1819, he placed a library, not a chapel, at the institution's center. It was a radical move, heralding an unwavering commitment to the pursuit of knowledge. In 1815, the newly-formed Library of Congress created the foundation for a great national library by acquiring Jefferson's collection of 6,487 personally-curated volumes. These included books on philosophy, science, literature, and other topics not generally viewed as part of a legislative library but expressed Jefferson's belief that all subjects are essential to the country's leadership. This philosophy remains the rationale behind the collecting policies of today's Library of Congress. It is perfectly reflected in the central role the UVA Library plays in the life of the University.

Responsive technology allows you to connect easily from anywhere, on any device. EVMS Medical Group continues its journey and evolution as a high-quality medical home for the patients we serve. We pride ourselves on staying up to date on the latest and safest therapies, treatments, and technology. Our practices use an electronic health record (EHR) to serve patients faster and better. The EHR replaces the paper medical chart with secure computerized records. Through this certified EHR and reporting software, we continue to migrate to more clinically integrated care. EVMS Medical Group has begun to focus on training the current workforce in the skills required to transform our healthcare delivery system. In our clinical practices, the nurses and medical assistants are being trained in higher-level team functions, such as population health, tracking hospital discharges, medication reconciliation, patient self-management, and smoking status and counseling. Our licensed nurses are training for proactive services, including the Medicare Wellness Visit for Medicare Beneficiaries. This visit provides a snapshot of a patient's current health, as a baseline for future yearly visits and is intended as a preventive service, a way of catching potentially serious health issues early. We continue to develop and refine clinical protocols to provide more cost-effective quality care. Our goal is to focus on areas of health care that need improvement. Through these tools, we identify, collect, and communicate data on quality and look at the most effective strategies for continuously improving the quality of care we provide to our patients. For more than four decades, EVMS has been the place for aspiring physicians and health professionals, passionate educators, and medical pioneers. In the 1960s, civic leaders in Hampton Roads sought to improve care in the region and created a bold dream to build a medical school. Thanks to determination and community commitment, EVMS opened its doors in 1973, forever transforming the healthcare landscape in Hampton Roads. Today, EVMS holds a privileged position in American history as one of the only schools of medicine and health professions in the nation founded by a grassroots effort. The institution's steady growth from just 23 medical students to an organization with a more than $1.2 billion annual economic impact is an inspiring testament to what vision, community commitment, and innovation can accomplish.

Today, WVU's Health Sciences Campus is a large, modern medical complex that includes Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacy and Public Health, three hospitals, a physician office building, state-of-the-art cancer and eye centers, and a $40 million facility that houses the Rockefeller Neurosciences Institute, named for U.S. Senator John D. Rockefeller's mother, who died of Alzheimer's disease. The School of Medicine serves more than 2,500 students with various educational programs -- including medicine, physical and occupational therapy, laboratory science (formerly medical technology), exercise physiology, continuing medical education, public health sciences, and others. Faculty members provide advanced clinical care to more than 100,000 West Virginians throughout the state. The institution is making a significant investment in new state-of-the-art facilities and improvements in education, research, and clinical care.

Going to college in the city is entirely different from going to a school with a more isolated, traditional campus. There is so. Much. to. Do. And Richmond is not just any city. It has got character. A state capital with an unlikely mix of qualities — historic, artsy, food-obsessed, Southern, diverse, laid-back — it has just the right dose of grittiness to give it an edge. Virginia Commonwealth University is home to more than 1,600 international students from 108 countries. As one of the top research universities in the U.S., we appreciate the global perspective and cultural diversity international students bring to our vibrant campus. With more than 220 degree and certificate programs, VCU has something for everyone, including many opportunities to gain real-life experience and perform the necessary research. Joining a fraternity or sorority at VCU can enhance your college experience. Whether it be finding a social niche, helping you reach your academic goals, or helping our community, membership in a fraternity or sorority adds an element to the college experience for which there is no substitute. At VCU, we offer a diverse mix of fraternities and sororities, hoping that everyone who wants to join a group finds one that closely matches their values and personalities. The Fraternity and Sorority Life Office provides guidance and support to 40 international fraternities and sororities at Virginia Commonwealth University. The VCU fraternity and sorority community consists of four governing councils: the College Panhellenic Council, the Interfraternity Council, the Multicultural Greek Council, and the National Pan-Hellenic Council. These four governing councils provide a governance structure for the 40 chapters. The community's overall direction is guided by the professional staff in the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life. Dedicated to the support and encouragement of responsible, independent student media organizations that connect, explore, and enrich the university's many constituencies' lives. We operate on a model of individual responsibility and professional standards instead of censorship and administrative control. We promote the values of integrity, tenacity, creativity, and honesty in the pursuit of excellence. Student Media is primarily funded by a portion of the Student Activity Fee, part of the annual student bill. As such, our publications are free to all students as available. Membership to our outlets is at the discretion and current needs of each organization, but there are no major or class year requirements to get involved. The Student Media Center has three professional staff members, two adjunct instructors, and a small hourly student support staff crew. Besides serving as advisers to individual students and media outlets, we provide graphic design services, advertising sales oversight, media/skills training, space management, and supplemental human resources and fiscal administration support. Additionally, the staff and organizations are guided by the Student Media Board, an appointed board consisting of VCU staff, faculty, and at-large student appointees. The Board also approves funding requests at the end of each spring semester. Way back — we are talking more than 175 years ago — in 1838; another name knew VCU. We were the Medical College of Hampden-Sydney, later becoming the Medical College of Virginia. It was not until 1968, when we merged with Richmond Professional Institute, that we were given the name Virginia Commonwealth University. But one thing is for sure: We have never stopped making history.

  9. The mission of the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM) is to educate students from diverse backgrounds as lifelong learners in osteopathic medicine and complementary health-related programs to support and develop graduate medical education training to advance scientific knowledge through academic, clinical, and basic science research and to promote patient-centered, evidence-based medicine. WVSOM is dedicated to serving, first and foremost, the state of West Virginia and the health care needs of its residents, emphasizing primary care in rural areas. Where tech meets hometown, it's a personal touch combined with cutting-edge technology that makes the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine the perfect place for future physicians to expand their minds while learning a personal, holistic approach to medicine. A leader in producing graduates who practice in rural settings, WVSOM blends the ease of living in a breathtaking mountain community with a nationally recognized faculty and innovative programs. U.S.News & World Report has ranked WVSOM among the top medical schools in the nation in primary care and family medicine for the past 20 years, solidifying the school's reputation as a place where scientific study and compassion are joined in one curriculum. The West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM) is committed to fostering an educational environment that values the development of human potential, cultural and ethnic diversity, and understanding. WVSOM will not discriminate against any student or applicant for admission based on race, ethnicity, color, religion, gender, gender identity, national origin, age, marital status, veteran or military status, disability, genetic information, or another category that is protected under federal, state, or local anti-discrimination laws. However, concerning disability, the disability must not be such as would, even with reasonable accommodation, in and of itself preclude the student or applicant's effective participation in the WVSOM educational program. Medical education costs are indeed high; therefore, careful planning and fiscal management are essential to meet your future obligations. Our goal is to help you become an informed borrower and provide a comprehensive financial assistance services system. We intend to provide not only dollar support but also financial counseling and debt management planning services. The WVSOM Financial Aid Philosophy statement suggests, we "expect that students will make every effort to finance their education". The Financial Aid Office will try to assist you with financing issues. Since scholarship and grant money is minimal, most students must secure outside educational loans to finance their education. It would help if you remembered that a loan is not a gift or grant - it must be repaid. Educational debt management is essential. We encourage you to learn some basic budgeting techniques, to learn to cut costs, and possibly to learn to live with less. We encourage you to seek ways to finance your education creatively. While the academic curriculum at WVSOM provides students with the foundation of medical knowledge, skills, and competencies needed by osteopathic physicians, participation in the numerous student organizations and activities available on campus further enhances the student educational experience. Involvement in co-curricular programs and activities provides students opportunities to develop skills that will better prepare them for eventual practice in the community. Leadership skills, time management, interpersonal relationships, marketing, public speaking, and networking with national professional and student professional associations are just some of the benefits and opportunities offered through the co-curricular program. All of the student organizations at WVSOM are student chapters of national professional organizations and abide by the national by-laws. The relationships with the national organizations give students a virtual professional network that provides additional educational and training opportunities. An additional benefit is the potential to be mentored by professionals in the field. WVSOM students serve on national committees for national professional organizations, further enhancing their educational experience and leadership development. Each student organization has identified a community non-profit that they will partner with throughout the year for service activities. The WVSOM medical education program fosters the development of caring and compassionate physicians. WVSOM leads the charge to elevate community-based services to a more prominent position in our nation's health care system. Our medical students are the top priority. Our rigorous program produces well-trained doctors dedicated, disciplined, and committed to being the best physicians by the books and the bedside. The student-centered class structure offers a 21st century, clinically integrated approach to medical education. Courses are presented in three major areas: Biomedical Sciences, Clinical Sciences, and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine. The modern WVSOM library provides electronic resources to supplement print items. It provides both on-campus and remote access to more than 8,000 e-journals, hundreds of e-books, and many medical databases. The WVSOM curriculum is carefully constructed to prepare its graduates for practice in any setting thoroughly. However, the WVSOM educational program is tailored to train osteopathic physicians for practicing primary care medicine in rural settings. The four-year program at WVSOM emphasizes basic and clinical sciences, training in hospital and primary care clinical settings, and extensive training in diagnostic skills, including early clinical experiences. Students are prepared for the challenges of rural practice through family medicine clerkships in rural areas.

West Virginia State University was founded under the provisions of the Second Morrill Act of 1890 as the West Virginia Colored Institute, one of 19 land-grant institutions authorized by Congress and designated by the states to provide for black citizens' education in agriculture and the mechanical arts. West Virginia was one of the states that maintained segregated educational systems at that time. From 1891 to 1915, the original Institute offered a high school education, vocational training, and teacher preparation. In 1915, the West Virginia Collegiate Institute began to offer college degrees. Under the leadership of President John W. Davis, the academic program was expanded, and new buildings were constructed. In 1927, the Institution was accredited by the North Central Association. In 1929, it became West Virginia State College. Over the next decades, WVSC became recognized as one of the leading public higher education institutions for African-Americans. In 1954, the United States Supreme Court gave its historic decision outlawing school segregation. The consequence of this decision for West Virginia State College was a rapid transition to an integrated institution serving a predominantly white, commuting, and older student population. Enrollment quadrupled during the following decades. Meanwhile, by a decision of the West Virginia Board of Education, WVSC was compelled to surrender land-grant status, the only one of the 1890 institutions only after a 12-year effort was the college's land-grant status fully restored in 2001 by an act of Congress. In 2004, the West Virginia Legislature approved WVSC's transition to University status, and today WVSU offers 23 bachelor's degrees and six master's degrees. With a rich history and promising future, WVSU is positioned to become the most student-centered research and teaching, land-grant university in West Virginia and beyond.

It was then that representatives from our founding organization, the American Baptist Home Mission Society, came to the former Confederate capital as teachers and missionaries. In that same month, eleven teachers held classes for former slaves at two missions in the city. By November 1865, the Mission Society had established and was officially holding classes for Richmond Theological School for Freedmen, one of the four institutions forming the "Union" that gives our University its name.

From that effort flow scores of large and small undertakings that are moving VMI into the future. Themes of commonality of purpose, synchronization, and integration guide those undertakings. 20. Research expands the boundaries of new knowledge and creative expression and promotes translational applications to improve human health. Interdisciplinary collaborations bring new perspectives to complex problems and mobilize creative energies that advance innovation and solve global challenges. Health care strives to preserve and restore health for all people, seek the cause and cure of diseases through groundbreaking research, and educate those who serve humanity. The diversity provides a climate of inclusion, dedication to addressing disparities wherever they exist, and an opportunity to explore and create in an environment of trust. Sustainable university-community partnerships that enhance the educational, economic, and cultural vitality of the communities VCU serves in Virginia and worldwide. Virginia Commonwealth University is the place where you can make it real. We believe students have the power to turn ideas into a solution that makes the world a better place. And we are not the only one who believes in our students. Research happens throughout Virginia Commonwealth University. Faculty and student researchers turn to the Office of Research and Innovation as the hub for resources and support. Virginia Commonwealth University is a vibrant, welcoming community. It is a place where you can be yourself or figure out who that self is. The best way to do that is to meet other people. People with similar interests, people who are entirely different, people you would never meet otherwise. They will make your college experience meaningful and help you be a part of something bigger than yourself. VCU's downtown Richmond location provides loads of unique educational opportunities for our students. From service-learning projects to internships at local businesses to visits to state government offices, our students are continually learning from the city they call home. View full university

  25. At Virginia Tech, we are reimagining how education and technology intersect. This approach transforms how we teach and learn, perform research, and engage with communities around the world. Hokies collaborate with diverse team members and cross the traditional lines between fields and disciplines to tackle global-scale problems. We push the boundaries of knowledge in order to make a difference in the world. Members of the Hokie Nation have a clear vision of how we can serve our personal, professional, and civic pursuits. Founded in 1872, Virginia Tech pushes knowledge boundaries by taking a hands-on, transdisciplinary approach to preparing students to be leaders and problem-solvers. As the commonwealth's most comprehensive university and its leading research institution, Virginia Tech offers about 280 undergraduate and graduate degree programs to more than 34,000 students and manages a more than $521 million research portfolio. The university fulfills its role as a land-grant institution by fostering a collaborative environment that integrates technology into all disciplines so that the Virginia Tech community can serve as a force for positive change around the commonwealth, the country, and the world. Through experiential learning, future-focused research, and inclusive, spirited culture, Virginia Tech strives to accomplish the charge of its motto Ut Prosim (That I May Serve). Virginia Tech has a 2,600-acre main campus, educational and research facilities across the state, a study-abroad site in Switzerland, and a 1,800-acre agriculture research farm near the main campus. The campus proper is located in Blacksburg in Montgomery County in the New River Valley and is 38 miles southwest of Roanoke. Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University is a public land-grant university serving the Commonwealth of Virginia, the nation, and the world community. The discovery and dissemination of new knowledge are central to its mission. Through its focus on teaching and learning, research and discovery, and outreach and engagement, the university creates, conveys, and applies knowledge to expand personal growth and opportunity, advance social and community development, foster economic competitiveness, and improve life quality. Virginia Tech offers hundreds of programs for every level of learning — from certifications to doctoral degrees. You (and your future employers) also expect a university learning environment to go far beyond mastering a single discipline or major, and that is what Virginia Tech provides. We will help you gain knowledge in at least one discipline while also creating opportunities to build communications, critical thinking, design thinking, teamwork, and analysis. Virginia Tech will equip you to apply the skills and knowledge you acquire through real-world experiences — giving you an education you will remember for a lifetime. As a student, you will spend only a portion of your time in the classroom. But all of your time at Virginia Tech will be spent in an environment that promotes learning and growing. Our campus life aims to complement our world-class academic experience by building communities, promoting holistic education, and cultivating environments that offer leadership, innovation, and service opportunities. Here, you will find a dynamic residential campus and award-winning dining in an environment committed to well-being. From our health and wellness programs to our hundreds of student organizations and clubs, life at Virginia Tech transforms students into the Hokies, who will change our world for the better. Adopted in 1896, the university motto, Ut Prosim (That I May Serve), has long pointed to true north for Hokies. Hokies leave Virginia Tech with far more than an academic degree. Students and alumni embrace service as a way of life: They engage with others in the community, knowing that global leaders and valuable citizens must serve others in their daily lives. Service has become Virginia Tech's most important tradition. VT Engage is a service-learning and civic engagement center in Student Affairs that inspires students to think more critically about themselves and the social issues they encounter. Students lead and learn by collaborating directly with the university's communities — not just once, but over time. Virginia Tech's Outreach and International Affairs supports the university's engagement mission by creating community partnerships and projects, offering professional development programs and technical assistance, and building collaborations to enrich discovery and learning — all with the overarching goal of improving the quality of life for people within the commonwealth and throughout the world. Outreach and International Affairs guide Virginia Tech's global presence. Its regional research and professional development and development centers across the commonwealth focus on graduate education and professional development. Blacksburg-based centers are dedicated to engagement, language, culture, and economic development. On October 1, 1872, Addison "Add" Caldwell walked 26 miles from Craig County to enroll as the first student at Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College. Ever since then, Virginia Tech has been fulfilling its role as a leading land-grant university. The tiny college, initially housed in the old Olin and Preston Institute near what is now Alumni Mall, has grown into a world-class university.
