    Tottori University

Tottori University was established in 1949 as a national university under the new National School Establishment Law system with three faculties, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Faculty of Agriculture, and Faculty of Medicine. It was integrated with Tottori Teacher Training Institute, and Tottori Young Men’s Teacher Training Institute both of which have roots in Training Center for Elementary School Teachers established in 1874, Tottori Professional School of Agriculture and Forestry, which descended from Tottori Advanced Agricultural School established in 1920, and Yonago Medical College which previously known as Yonago Prefectural School of Medicine established in 1945. Later in 1965 Faculty of Engineering was established to aim for regional industrial development. Throughout the time of its predecessors and until today, Tottori University has focused on practical learning, challenged the issues facing the regional communities through taking advantage of the knowledge that human beings have developed, and contributed to the region through improving people’s lives and promoting industrial development. Tottori University has pursued activities with a global vision while keeping a close relationship with the local communities. In light of the global age with a blend of various senses of values, the university is committed to fulfilling its responsibilities for the societies as a Code of Conduct through understanding that there are a variety of cultures and ideas and having compassion for the minorities and people who are suffering from hardship. Tottori University shall respect the tradition of representing practical learning and activities collaborating with the regional communities and expanding them to the world. They shall continue the activities to advance wisdom by deepening the knowledge to acquire theories and contribute widely to the regional and international societies through practice. The university is committed to working for education, research, and service to the societies by setting “Fusion of Knowledge and Practice” as a school principal concept. Problem solution and knowledge-building can be performed through mutual inspiration between theories and practice. Tottori University shall continue moving forward to create a future where people can live with peace of mind through the principle concept of “Fusion of Knowledge and Practice.” The following three goals are set based on the understanding that overcoming of the global level issues should be started from solving the local issues, and the local issues should be handled with a global perspective and most importantly, should be beneficial for the welfare of people: To develop well-educated human resources who can play a crucial role in society. To promote cutting-edge research that contributes to solving global and social issues. To contribute to the international and regional communities and to unite with regions. Tottori University shall strive to achieve the goals with full efforts to hope that the next generation would take over this learning institution with respect by thinking of the former generation’s efforts to build today’s university and observe the proud tradition.
  2. Tottori University of Environmental Studies' fundamental principle is to foster human talent capable of contributing to the achievement of harmonious coexistence of people, society, and nature, in addition to conducting innovative academic research. To spread knowledge widely, educate and research specialized science deeply, and achieve the harmonious coexistence of people, society, and nature, Tottori University of Environmental Studies nurtures people with great human qualities, who think and act for themselves live their lives powerfully. Furthermore, we foster human talent who aim to develop a sustainable society while maintaining a local perspective that values the regional natural environment and the connections between people, with an excellent sense of balance capable of global activities spanning both conservation of the natural environment and human economic development human talent who are connected to and take responsibility for their local region and can succeed on the world stage. At present, creating a sustainable society by constructing a low-carbon, a recycling-oriented society that coexists with nature is becoming a shared global goal. The Sustainability Research Institute, which was inaugurated in July 2009, consists of five research laboratories (research fields), which research environmental sustainability topics such as sustainable agriculture, forestry, fisheries industries, waste-related issues, and utilization of energy that uses natural resources. In Japan, from now on, the decrease and aging of the population are inevitable. In those circumstances, we have to explore and build new ways of living. At the Regional Innovation Research Center, we deal with several subjects such as Tottori Prefecture's regional community and culture, founded on a specific natural environment, and industry. Through research and practice in this region, we aim to offer students a position therein that can play a leading role in this goal in the future. We understand that solutions to environmental problems at a regional level lie inside the region itself. We engage in education/research, conscious that efforts made in the little Tottori Prefecture could become the world's model in the future.
