About Me

  1. In partnership with parents, our Buddhist school works to instill and develop in our students the core virtues of kindness, filial piety, respect, trustworthiness, fairness, citizenship, integrity, and humility. We provide an environment for our students to achieve their full academic potential and become outstanding citizens who will contribute to making their community and the world a better place. Instilling Goodness/Developing Virtue Schools are founded on the ideas outlined in the teachings of the Buddha. Accordingly, courses in Buddhist Studies are requisite for all students. Students of all faiths, however, are welcome. A full academic program, as required by the State of California, is offered. The curriculum reflects a commitment to educating the whole person. Accordingly, the elementary school emphasizes respect for parents, teachers, and elders. In contrast, the secondary school guides students to fulfill their personal and civic responsibilities and cherish their families, nation, and living beings. Developing Virtue Secondary School is a Buddhist school that, in partnership with parents, works to instill and develop in our students the core virtues of kindness, filial reverence, respect, trustworthiness, fairness, citizenship, integrity, and humility. We provide an environment for our students to achieve their full academic potential and become outstanding citizens who contribute to making their community and the world a better place. Students participate in a variety of elective and extracurricular enrichment programs, which have included Chinese Orchestra, Lion Dance, Dragon Dance, 24 Seasons Festival Drumming, Chinese Traditional Dance, Yearbook, Student Newsletter, Associated Student Council, Model United Nations, Community Service Club, Basketball, Soccer, Tai Chi, Yoga, Drama, Calligraphy, Piano, Violin, Advanced Religious Studies, Boys Scouts, Mathematics Competitions, Chinese Competitions, and Interfaith Dialogues. Most students participate in several extracurricular activities. All students serve, perform, and help organize the annual celebrations of Honoring Elders Day (autumn) and Cherishing Youth Day (spring), which are attended by 500 to 1000 people from the surrounding Mendocino County community. The approximately 40 faculty members include monastic and lay members of the Dharma Realm Buddhist Association and teachers and professionals from around the world, who create a stimulating learning environment through a blend of Western and Eastern teaching philosophies and methods. The faculty's average teaching experience is 13.5 years, with approximately 40% holding master's degrees and 10% holding doctoral degrees. The student/teacher ratio is 2:1, and Developing Virtue School's average class size is 12. Interaction between teacher and student does not stop in the classroom. Teachers work as coaches, sponsors for clubs, and advisors to students. And most live on campus.
  2. Turney school is Part of the Lansdowne Turney Federation. The Federation consists of two SEND schools in Lambeth. We see both schools as communities for children and young people with Autistic Spectrum conditions and/or language delay/disorder and associated learning difficulties. Turney School is specifically for children and young people aged from 5-19 years of age with Autistic Spectrum Condition and associated learning difficulties Developing the whole child and young person is important across the Federation. Our ethos is to provide a secure, caring, and supportive environment in which there is an expectation of pupil achievement and raised attainment. This is reflected in all we do and throughout our website. Both schools apply a holistic approach to learning and work closely with the speech therapists, the occupational therapist and the educational psychologist, the school doctor and nurse, as well as outside agencies to enable all children and young people with special educational needs to access the curriculum. All the young people attending Turney have full access to the National Curriculum, the personal, social, health, and citizenship curriculum, as well as a life skills program. In Turney’s Post 16 program the young people follow life skills, independent living, and supported employment pathway which enables them to leave Turney as happy and independent young people, ready to enter Further Education. Both schools in the Federation work closely to ensure the best possible outcomes for the children and young people through shared staff knowledge and training. In line with our shared ethos, the children and young people work across both schools. They have shared PSHCE and work experience programs, as well as the opportunity for young people to move placements across the Federation in KS3 and KS5. At Turney, curriculum opportunities extend across all aspects of the school day. Teaching is not confined to the classroom and at any time staff are there to support, teach, reinforce and develop new skills at lunchtime, playtime, and visits to the community. We aim to provide a broad and balanced curriculum that is appropriate to the needs of each pupil at Turney School. Every pupil has an Individual Education Plan (IEP) designed by the teachers in consultation with the other professionals working with the pupil. Communication plays a great part across Primary, Secondary, and Post 16. The school staff works closely with the speech and language therapists. The speech and language therapists assess the needs of all the pupils entering the school and work with them in the classrooms, in small groups, and individually. We believe in working together to support the children, regularly holding a parent/carers support group, where the communication team comes together with parents/carers to discuss areas of interest. Guest speakers are invited to these meetings including the Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, and the Health Education Link Service.

  10. Sacred Heart Catholic School is a vibrant and dynamic school with high expectations and great ambitions for every one of our pupils. We believe that discipline, structure, and common purpose are solid foundations for success in life and education, and we understand the value of professionalism and innovation in everything we do. We are a Catholic school with very strong moral values and a traditional approach to behavior and discipline our pupils to understand their rights and responsibilities, respect rules and boundaries, and learn to live in honesty and trust. Sacred Heart School consistently achieves outstanding academic results, way above local and national averages in every subject area. For example, in 2014, we became the first state school in Southwark to reach the landmark figure of 90% A*-C including English and Maths. The new measure for Progress 8, a more comprehensive measure of school success, places us firmly as one of the very top-performing schools in the country. Our relatively new Sixth Form has quickly followed suit and we have already sent many students to top universities, including Oxford, Cambridge, and many other members of the Russell Group. We fully expect to maintain the same high standards of academic success at A-Level in the coming years that we have reached GCSE. We also have an exceptional record of helping our pupils to achieve more than they think is possible. Sacred Heart has consistently been in the top 2% of the country for adding value to pupils’ education at both Key Stage 3 and 4. As well as outstanding academic outcomes Sacred Heart prides itself on educating the whole child. Academic results will only go so far and we insist on a comprehensive program of moral education, teaching good manners, respect, and a determination to show our pupils that Gospel values are to be lived by, especially when it comes to looking after and caring for those less fortunate. Our Vision: "As a school dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, we work to bring one another to an awareness of the fullness and meaning of life, rooted in the love of Jesus". Mission Statement: "Our school strives to be a Catholic community in which Christian principles of care and respect are valued, with emphasis on the development of the individual through academic achievement and personal development". To achieve our vision we will: Recognize and treasure the unique gifts of each pupil and do all that we can to allow these to develop and flourish. Provide the highest possible quality of education where each child is challenged to pursue the highest standards in spiritual, moral, cultural, intellectual, and physical development in an environment of academic endeavor and personal discipline. Create a welcoming community of faith that witnesses to the teachings of the gospel and fosters strong bonds of love within the community we serve. Form our pupils in the attitudes of the heart of Jesus expressed in respect, compassion, forgiveness, and generosity. Learning at Sacred Heart is interactive, engaging, and relevant to the real world. Our pupils have a strong grounding in traditional core academic subjects (English, Maths, Science, and RE) from Year 7 onwards, providing a positive platform for achievement in other areas. They learn how to prepare, organize and motivate themselves for work each day, and we support them at every stage of their school career. We want them to be excited by their learning, to recognize its importance, and to be proud of their achievements in every discipline. Sacred Heart has long bathed in the light of outstanding GCSE results and, since the establishment of our Sixth Form, we now have excellent A-Level grades to celebrate too. Our traditional approach and very strong moral values have been carried forward into our Sixth Form as we prepare our young adults for places at the country’s top universities, including offers already in our first few years of operation from Oxford, Cambridge, and many other Russell Group universities. Our curriculum is wide-ranging and proactive, designed to meet the needs of everyone’s abilities, interests, and aspirations for the future. Our pupils learn to think for themselves and we encourage them to become independent learners who ask good questions, think creatively, and solve problems with confidence. By the time our pupils leave school, we want them to be self-disciplined and focused young people who are determined to succeed in whatever career they choose to pursue. Here at Sacred Heart, we believe that learning experiences do not just take place in the classroom, or even in school, but in our local community and further afield too. We appreciate that pupils learn and develop into well-rounded individuals when they are performing on stage or in music concerts, when they are camping in the countryside, or when they are visiting other countries and experiencing other cultures. We celebrate our Catholic traditions as a community and have a special relationship with the Parishes of Sacred Heart and English Martyrs. We encourage our pupils to ‘live their faith’ and work together to raise thousands of pounds for charity. This work allows our pupils to reach out and support not only their local community but also the needy elsewhere in the world. Sacred Heart Catholic School is a united and happy community with a clear sense of purpose and direction. We promote a culture of respect for self and others and we have a very strict, traditional, and rigorous approach to discipline. Our pupils receive consistent messages about good behavior, appearance, manners, and trust. They learn to take responsibility for themselves and to understand their duties as good citizens. We want them to set high standards in their communities and to learn how to lead others with dignity and determination. Sacred Heart Catholic School has received national recognition for the value it adds to enable students' high achievement at GCSE. The school qualified for three SSAT Educational Outcomes Awards by being in the top 10% of non-selective schools nationally for high attainment the top 10% for progress made by pupils between their key stage 2 results at primary school and their GCSE results at age 16 and special recognition for their success in enabling students to fulfill their potential.
  11. The Secondary school opened in September 2014 with Years S1-S3. We now offer secondary education up to and including S6. New year groups are opened annually, culminating in our first European Baccalaureate in summer 2019. Secondary education in the European Schools lasts for a total of seven years, divided into three cycles: The Observation Cycle S1-S3, The Pre Orientation Cycle S4-S5, The Orientation Cycle S6-S7. At ESH, we aim to provide a modern, stimulating, and relaxed learning environment. Our ethos and educational philosophy are to create and nurture multicultural, multilingual, responsible, tolerant, and aware European citizens. The European Schools have the two objectives of providing formal education and encouraging pupils’ personal development in a broader social and cultural context. Formal education involves the acquisition of competencies – knowledge, skills, and attitudes across various domains. Personal development takes place in a variety of spiritual, moral, social, and cultural contexts. It involves an awareness of appropriate behavior, an understanding of the environment in which pupils live, and their identity development. These two objectives are nurtured in the context of an enhanced awareness of the richness of European culture. Awareness and experience of a shared European life should lead pupils towards greater respect for the traditions of each country and region in Europe while developing and preserving their own national identities. The syllabuses in all the language sections of the European Schools, including the European School The Hague, are – except for mother tongue – identical, and the same standards are insisted on. All programs of study in the different sections lead to the same examination: the European Baccalaureate. To ensure that the European Baccalaureate is recognized, syllabuses are designed to meet the minimum requirements of all the member states. Since these vary, the contents have been established by negotiation between national experts – more particularly by the members of the Boards of Inspectors – based on scrutiny and comparison of national curricula. The Joint Teaching Committee then approves the syllabuses of the European Schools, the pedagogical supervisory authority. The following text is taken from the document “New structure for all syllabuses in the European Schools" system” 2011-09-D-47-en-3. 21. Under the Framework for Enhancing Student Learning, all Abbotsford School District schools are required to develop a long term plan to improve student achievement, one that maintains a balance on the intellectual, social and career development of students. Each year, each school develops an annual plan and sets individual goals to improve student achievement. During 2019 our Learning Commons has continued to expand opportunities for staff and students. This year we have added a small sound studio in the back room, as well as a 3D printer. Mr. Jung has worked in cooperation with our Learning Commons instructor (Mr. Dekleva) to develop a 3D board game design unit. Students designed and printed dice and game pieces for this collaborative learning project. We are also beginning to offer professional development opportunities for teachers! This year we have offered several unique opportunities for teachers to drop by on their prep blocks to take advantage of workshops and further their learning and professional development. The workshops have been a huge success. Our students will learn key academic skills - like reading, writing and math - to encompass the knowledge and processes associated with intellectual development. As learners and meaning-makers, students take subject-specific concepts and content and transform them into a new understanding. A new course being offered, Environmental Science 11, is a lab based course where the content is pulled from the headlines. Students investigate different issues facing the planet today such as climate change, single use plastics, air pollution and acidification of our oceans. Through exploration and inquiry, students build a better understanding of the challenges facing the planet and learn about sustainability. At the end of each semester, Yale's senior art students celebrate their accomplishments with an art show. The entire school, as well as parents are invited to come and see students' best two and three dimensional work. The show is catered by our very own foods classes. In ceramics class students get an in depth study into clay and its properties. Student learn hand building techniques as well as get to use the potters wheel to throw bowls, mugs, and vases. In Art class students engage in a variety of wet and dry medium as a vessel to express their creativity. Our students will study personal and human social skills and as they relate to students' identity in the world - both as individuals and as members of their community. We are learning that personal and human social skills encompass the abilities students needs to thrive as individuals, to understand and care about themselves and others, and to find and achieve their purposes in the world. The Advanced Placement (AP) is a program in the United States and Canada (currently offered at Yale Secondary) that was created by the College Board offering college-level curriculum and examinations to high school students. American colleges often grant placement and course credit to students who obtain high scores above a certain number on the examinations. The AP curriculum for the various subjects is created for the College Board by a panel of experts and college-level educators in each subject. For a high school course to have the AP designation, the course must be audited by the College Board to ascertain it satisfies the AP curriculum. If the course is approved the school may use the AP designation and the course will be publicly listed on the AP Ledger. Apart from offering Advanced Placement classes, Yale has an outstanding reputation for academic excellence offering Honours courses throughout the grade levels. Above Picture: AP Chemistry students Sam Lee, Jayden Yoo, Andrea Wong, Jake Johnston and Nafeel Ahmad recently competed in the Trinity Western University Lab Skills Competition. An academic scholarship exam was a large part of the evaluation. Some ten teams from all over the Fraser Valley totaling nearly 40 students wrote the exam. The Yale team members placed 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th. WHOA - some kind of super academic performance. View full school
