  5. The Barlow RC High School is a high-performing Catholic secondary school, with over 850 pupils on the roll. Our staff and student relationships are excellent and the school has made significant improvements over recent years. This was recognized in our last Ofsted report in October 2012. In 2012, we also achieved our best results, with 95% of our pupils gaining five or more GCSEs at A*-C, 74% including English and Maths. Dedicated to St Ambrose Barlow a local Martyr and Saint, the school was established in 1985 as a result of the amalgamation of the Hollies RC High School for Girls and St Mark's RC High School for Boys. The Barlow is situated in the heart of East Didsbury, a suburb of Manchester, and is easily accessible from the A34 bypass and the M56 and M60 motorway networks. In April 2010, The Barlow began a program of building work at an estimated investment of £11.2 million. The renovation work was part of the Building Schools for the Future program - the Government's investment in rebuilding and refurbishing secondary schools in England. The building work was completed in 2012 and as a result, the school has a new, high-specification science block, lecture theatre, sports hall, ICT suites, astroturf pitch, and reception area. The English, Maths, Design & Technology, and Art departments were all remodeled creating an environment that is both purposeful and inspiring. Barlow aims to develop the whole child morally, socially, physically, academically, spiritually, and under their individual needs. Our assemblies are instrumental in helping to develop the aims, attitudes, and values of our school and we celebrate and reward the success and achievements of our children. We are proud of the friendly and focused learning atmosphere, which is often remarked upon by visitors. Our Governing Body is very supportive of the school and the Governors are involved in all aspects of school life. We strongly encourage and believe in working in partnership with parents. At The Barlow, we aim to provide a broad and balanced curriculum, which not only fulfills the requirements of the National Curriculum but meets the needs of our pupils and enables them to realize their full potential and prepare them to live as confident, responsible Christian adults in society. Our curriculum is recognized as one of the school's strengths and demonstrates our determination to provide opportunities for all pupils. The Ofsted report from our inspection in November 2016 stated: 'Leaders have ensured that the curriculum is appropriate and meets the needs of pupils to equip them to move on to the next stage of their education. The pupils whom inspectors spoke to said that they feel that they have a good range of subjects to study and subsequently choose from. The effectiveness of the curriculum can be seen by the very high numbers of pupils who go on to further education, employment, and/or training. In Years 7 & 8 pupils study the following subjects: Religious Education, English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, SpanishorFrench, Computing, Design Technology, Art, Drama, Music and Physical Education. There are a small number of pupils in Year 7, for whom it is appropriate, who study additional Literacy as part of their curriculum provision. In Year 8, our pupils take their Options. This is when they decide which subjects they would like to study in Years 9, 10, and Year 11. This period during their school career is very important, as the choices they make are likely to influence their future studies. All our Year 9, 10 and Year 11 pupils have to study core subjects. These are: Religious Studies, English Language and Literature, Mathematics, Science (either Combined Science or Separate - Biology, Chemistry, and Physics), Physical Education and Personal, Social and Health Education (PHSE), Citizenship, Careers, Enterprise & Work Related Learning Communication is very important to us and our relationship with parents and the wider community is crucial to our success. We want you to share in the life of the school and the achievements of our pupils. We have designed this website to give you that insight. The Barlow is an inclusive Roman Catholic Secondary School provided by the Diocese of Salford and maintained by the Manchester Local Education Authority as a Voluntary Aided School. The parish communities served by the school are St Ambrose Barlow, St Bernard's St Bernadette's, St Catherine's, and St Cuthbert's. Nevertheless, our students come from a wide range of backgrounds and many are drawn from outside the parishes because parents, although not all Catholic, are attracted by the school's inclusive and caring ethos. With applicants for Year 7 in the secondary admissions round, when the School is oversubscribed with more applicants than places, students will be placed on a waiting list and allocated criteria as per the school's Admission Policy. The allocated criteria submitted will determine a waiting list order. Where vacancies occur parents/carers will be contacted should a place become available.
  6. Stepney Green Maths, Computing & Science College is a boys’ comprehensive school and one of the top schools in the Borough. We are heavily over-subscribed with long waiting lists. The majority of families are from Bangladesh and therefore most of the students are members of the Muslim faith. We have a small but increasing number of students from other communities. The school is located in the East End of London, close to Canary Wharf and docklands, in an area of social and economic disadvantage but also exciting new opportunities. It is close to residential riverside developments and no more than a mile from the City of London. At Stepney Green Maths, Computing & Science College our vision is to ensure that all our students have the opportunity to gain the qualifications and skills required for them to take their rightful place in a global community. To us, every child matters and we work together with our families to realize our students’ dreams and aspirations. At Stepney Green there is a real drive for academic excellence, coupled with an approach to develop the whole person, making learning enjoyable and exciting. In 2011, Ofsted judged the school as “Outstanding”, and these included teaching and learning, leadership and management, and parents/community links. DCSF has identified the school as a ‘High Performing Specialist School’ and the borough has reclassified the school as Outstanding. We have also gained a second specialism, which is in Science. Our sporting accomplishments are outstanding, our parents are extremely supportive and our staffs are committed to improving their practice. The Governing Body is fully supportive and keen to see Stepney Green realize its potential as a center of excellence for learning and achievement. The school benefits from a variety of funding including Excellence in Cities, National Grid for Learning, Behaviour Improvement Plan, and is part of the Building Schools for the Future program. Stepney Green Maths, Computing & Science College is a vibrant and exciting place to teach, with staff who are extremely supportive of each other. We are very pleased with the improvements we have made but we are also determined to make further progress in the future. We are committed to the idea of continuous school improvement, providing all staff (particularly those new to the school) with excellent training and support, and building a learning community for all. The mission of Stepney Green Maths, Computing and Science College is to develop, motivate, and inspire our pupils, enabling them to succeed in life. Our vision is for all individuals at Stepney Green Maths & Computing College to be successful learners, who enjoy learning, make progress and achieve. Together we aspire to become creative, confident people who can live safe, healthy, and fulfilling lives, thus ensuring we are all responsible citizens who make a positive contribution to society. We are committed to providing an appropriate and high-quality education for all our students. We believe that all children and young people - including those identified with special educational needs and disabilities - have a common entitlement to be fully included in aspects of school life and must have access to a broad and balanced academic and social curriculum. Part of our mission is to ensure all our students make good academic progress, and “become creative, confident people who can live safe, healthy and fulfilling lives”. To this end, our objective is to ensure a wide range of extended school provisions to meet the needs of our school and the wider community. We work with the gradually expanding “Stepney Partnership” to bring together children, families, and staff across the partnership schools of primary and secondary to share fun activities, new experiences, understanding of each other, and expertise. All our students are included on our school trips and we often target different groups to ensure all have the chance to experience new adventures and a different way of learning. We make adjustments to accommodate those with additional needs and ensure all feel welcome and comfortable joining in. Rigorous assessments are made to ensure student's needs are met, safety is of the highest standard, any risk factors are minimal, and thorough evaluations help to inform future planning.

  9. Tokyo University of Science, founded in 1881, is one of the oldest private universities of science and technology in Japan. Rooted in a strong sense of ethics, scientists and engineers at TUS strive to solve global challenges and make the world a better place through science. The Tokyo Butsurigaku Koshujo (Tokyo Academy of Physics), the Tokyo University of Science forerunner, was founded in 1881. The Academy was the brainchild of 21 young scientists who had just graduated from the Department of Physics at the University of Tokyo (then the Imperial University). Two years later, the Academy was renamed the Tokyo Butsuri Gakko (Tokyo College of Science). At the time, there was a strong popular movement for democratic rights. In this climate, while teaching and research in politics, economics, and law came to the fore, there was a tendency to downplay the importance of teaching and science research. Tokyo University of Science has four major libraries and field-specific document and reference collections run by individual schools and departments. The four major university libraries are the Kagurazaka Library (located on the ninth, tenth, and eleventh floors of Building No. 1 on the Kagurazaka campus), the Katsushika Library on the Katsushika campus, the Commemorative Library (Noda Library) on the Noda campus and the Oshamambe Library on the Oshamambe campus. The University runs a computer system that links these four libraries with the Tokyo University of Science, Suwa Library, allowing students and faculty members to search quickly and access materials throughout the TUS library system. We are also working on a system that would allow various electronic resources, including databases, online journals, and electronic books, to be accessed from anywhere in the University. Every TUS campus features a range of athletic facilities to help maintain students' health and members and build their strength. In addition to the standard physical education courses, athletic facilities throughout the University are available for extracurricular activities, social events, and various other activities. TUS is leading the way among universities with its unique classroom facility called "Seminar House" on the Noda campus. The Seminar House includes a full range of special-purpose rooms, including large assembly halls, seminar rooms, PC laboratories, meeting rooms, accommodations, a cafeteria, and more. Other TUS facilities range from the on-campus Student Training Center to those beyond the borders of its campuses, such as the Daigo Training Center. These facilities are available for seminars, training events, or overnight club activities. The Science and Technology Museum was constructed to commemorate the 110th anniversary of the University's founding, and its Meiji-era architecture now stands as a symbol of the Kagurazaka campus. The late Fuku Futamura, the graduate of 1941, was a proponent of scientific and technological education and research who worked to restore the two-story wooden building that housed the Tokyo College of Science (predecessor to the modern Tokyo University of Science built-in 1964). The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 AM to 4 PM (excluding university holidays). It houses a collection of old science books, the first Japanese-made computer, the first English-Japanese dictionary written in Japan, a gramophone invented by Thomas Edison, and numerous other treasures. Visitors can enjoy a variety of exhibits, including hands-on and interactive displays. The Tokyo Butsurigaku Koshujo (Tokyo Academy of Physics), the Tokyo University of Science forerunner, was founded in 1881. Two years later, the Academy was renamed the Tokyo Butsuri Gakko (Tokyo College of Science). The University of Tokyo (then the Imperial University) was founded in 1877. Because a French instructor taught physics in the Faculty of Science in French, the University of Tokyo established the Department of Physics in French, which continued for around three years. A group of 19 first- to third-year young scientists who graduated from this department and two others founded the Tokyo Academy of Physics and formed a pact to sustain the Academy, with the aim of "Building a Better Future with Science." (The group later came to be known as the "sustaining" teachers.) Back then, a popular movement for democratic rights was at its prime. When departments of politics, economics, and law flourished, the "sustaining" teachers believed that "science and technology were the foundations of national prosperity." The movement to promote a broad understanding of science advocated by the Tokyo College of Science resonated with professors at the University of Tokyo at the time. Eminent professors such as Dairoku Kikuchi (Mathematics), Kenjiro Yamakawa (Physics), Aikitsu Tanakadate (Physics), Hamtaro Nagaoka (Physics), and Joji Sakurai (Chemistry), who went on to become president of the University of Tokyo and leaders of RIKEN lent their support to the movement. Until the Kyoto Imperial University was consequently founded in 1897 and the College of Science and Technology (Faculty of Science and Technology) was established within the University, natural sciences were taught only at the University of Tokyo and the Tokyo College of Science interim years of the Meiji Period. 10. Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology (TUMSAT) was established in October 2003 through the Integration of Tokyo University of Mercantile Marine and Tokyo University of Fisheries. This year marks the 13th anniversary of TUMSAT. The Mitsubishi Nautical School, the predecessor of the former Tokyo University of Mercantile Marine, was founded by Yataro Iwasaki, the Mitsubishi Group founder, in 1875 and celebrated its 140th-anniversary last year. The former Tokyo University of Fisheries also has a long history, as its predecessor, the Japan Fisheries Association's Fisheries Training School, was established in 1888. Inheriting these two academic organizations' unique traditions, TUMSAT plays a leading role in the continuing development of Japan as a maritime nation. As Japan's only University dedicated to oceanography and related studies, TUMSAT is committed to conducting education and research activities based on the motto "To know and conserve the sea." As part of its efforts, TUMSAT will establish the School of Marine Resources and Environment, composed of two departments, the Undergraduate Course of Marine Resources and Energy and the Undergraduate Course of Ocean Sciences, in April 2017. The new school will foster the development of professionals who can work on a global scale for the exploration of oceanic energy and seafloor resources, as well as for the preservation and restoration of the marine environment based on their comprehensive knowledge of marine science, covering all areas from the seafloor to the atmosphere. Through such experts' development, the University hopes to contribute to the creation and growth of marine industries. Concurrent with the new faculty's establishment, TUMSAT will also launch a corresponding program at its graduate school. With an eye on developing global human resources, we will proactively recruit non-Japanese academics for the new school. Furthermore, to provide students with a practical education that meets the actual needs of related industries, we plan to invite the business community members to become involved with the new school. We will also reform existing faculty organizations. Specifically, we will reorganize the School of Marine Science into the School of Marine Life Sciences to promote biological science education and research and fisheries and foods and establish an integrated educational system that covers issues related to business management and distribution. For the School of Marine Technology, we will shift to a system that focuses extensively on maritime technology, marine vessel engines, power and machinery systems, and engineering technologies for promoting sea exploration. In its education and research activities, TUMSAT focuses on a broad spectrum of themes, including lectures to stimulate students' motivation for career development after graduation at both the undergraduate and graduate level, such as overseas career training and lectures on advanced professional career development increasing the number of lectures provided in English and fostering the Global Leadership Initiative (GLI) program as part of the University's globalization efforts establishing an international course to develop experts in marine environment and oceanic energy and a course to develop experts in advanced marine technology collaborating with other research institutes, such as the Japan Fisheries Research and Education Agency (FRA) and Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), to offer a more diverse lineup of specialized courses at the graduate school establishing and managing the Salad Science Endowed Lecture Series and implementing the joint exploration programs for the Antarctic Ocean in cooperation with the National Institute of Polar Research. For human resources development, we have launched the Fisheries-Marine Innovation Technologies Consortium. We are developing experts in research management through this Consortium and are committed to developing young researchers and supporting female researchers under the tenure track system. Moreover, to make social contributions, TUMSAT has academic exchange agreements with 102 institutions in 34 countries/regions, accepts 232 international students from 23 countries/regions, and has 67 students and 482 teachers and other staff dispatched abroad. TUMSAT is proactively conducting activities that promote regional cooperation both within and outside Japan. Specifically, the University is eagerly promoting industry-academia collaboration with related industries, returning benefits to a society based on education and research results, and holding events for Marine Day, including extension lectures and events related to the Meiji-maru, which is designated as an important cultural property. In order to support recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake, TUMSAT has been implementing a unique recovery project using its research facilities, including the training vessels (the Umitaka-maru and the Shinyo-maru) and gathering the wisdom of the faculty, while also continuing recovery support initiatives in cooperation with other universities, research institutes, and the national and local governments (Kesennuma City and others). TUMSAT will strive to provide students with advanced knowledge about marine science and technology, thereby developing experts who have professional knowledge of oceanography and the ability to use that knowledge in the real world with a global perspective. 11. Today, the Shonai area in the Tohoku region's top west corner is brimming with a mood of creativity and enterprise. This new spirit has given rise to a new university. The twentieth century was the era that focused on money and material goods and capital and the market rule, but the twenty-first century is the era of people and mind/heart that we call "Koeki." This will be a world in which children will live as they should, and people as humanely as they possibly can. In our university, students will broaden their minds and deepen their specialist knowledge through our education to respond to these changes in social ethnography and contribute to the harmonious development of cultural exchange, welfare, and economics. Koski University was initially established in 2001 with the enthusiastic demand from the local people and government. In the beginning, we started with the invaluable assistance of Keio University. We started with a single department and a single faculty. By 2014, two departments - Departments of Business/ Policy Management and Cross-Cultural Studies - were set up, the latter of which the International Liberal Arts Program was newly created to develop a global point of view. We received a COC grant from the Ministry of Education to pursue revitalization and recreation of the local community. We strive to contribute to society and local communities through our unique educational system and learning methodology from a global standpoint in the coming years. View full university
  12. Our university, Tokyo University of Science Suwa (TUSS), was founded in 2002 as a daughter branch of Tokyo University of Science (TUS), the largest science-oriented university in Japan with a long history of more than 130 years. We are located on the foot of the mount Yatsugatake, whose broad, the beautiful view we can enjoy season to season from our campus. Education and research of TUSS possess three features. The first is that TUSS is a "small" university belonging to a family of a "large" one TUS. Accordingly, our education and research are conducted on a firm basis of the mother university TUS. In contrast, face to face education can be given with the advantage of its small size. The second feature is "synergy education" of technology and management. This Suwa district is a focal area of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) for precision manufacturing. Accordingly, our education is so designed to provide students of technology with a management background and management with that of technology. The third one is pioneering research works reflecting the high research activity of the mother university TUS. Our research covers areas directly concerned with industries in this district, such as environment and renewable energy, robotics, digital media, communication technology, and business management. In addition to producing individuals with a high level of expertise, we aim to nurture our students' drive to attain the knowledge, methodology, and skills needed to respond to societal changes and the challenges for tomorrow. With a firm understanding of the technology and ethical viewpoints involved in information and communication technologies and the importance of environmental conservation, we train people to create solutions to today's information society's challenges and innovate products in the 21st century. Graduates from this university acquire a high level of excellent and practical skills that make them sought-after by companies and businesses. Rather than treating the fields of engineering and management as separate, we endeavor to understand the relationships, views, and knowledge of both fields. To be specific, we encourage this through functions where faculty and students from four departments Yes mixed at freshman seminars, engineering and management course, and synergetic active learning seminar and associated particular subjects from different faculties. To cultivate a synthesis of knowledge, skills, and ethics, studies in information literacy and environmental awareness are included as a basis for general and specialized education. It is essential to provide students with broad yet high-level abilities, attitudes, and habits that form the basis of their major. These aptitudes will serve them in the post-graduate world to acquire further skills and knowledge on one's own. Abilities such as clear communication, self-expression, problem identification and solution, and a desire for learning are enhanced and reinforced by refining knowledge and skill. These abilities also form the foundation of self-determined effort after graduation. As students' paths lead them to attend talks, seminars, experiments, and thesis research, their study tends to evolve from memorization towards a thinking type of education where they can appreciate the 'joy of knowledge and creation' and the 'joy of creation' in their learning. We emphasize small class sizes and interactive learning to develop their ability to respond to the times' challenges and changes. View full university

  18. Nihon Institute of Medical Science, a member of the Josai Group, traces its beginning to Josai Business School, established in 1918. The Institute was founded in 2007 with Josai College of Medical Arts & Sciences as a forerunner. Together with this College, the Institute has sent out many specialists in health and medicine into Japanese society. In Japan, we provide world-class, cutting-edge medical care. Medical Science will further advance at a rapid pace. Since medical care has to be provided based on scientific evidence, we need to acquire the same knowledge and technology level. However, medical science is not perfect. We cannot prevent or cure all kinds of diseases. You may get sick even if you lead a healthy lifestyle. Early diagnosis does not always assure complete recovery. We have to face this circumstance with our patients. Thus, we need to have kindness, consideration, preparation, and qualification as medical professionals. Therefore, the Nihon Institute of Medical Science (NIMS) provides knowledge and technology based on scientific evidence and cultivates humanities based on its predecessor, Josai College of Medical Arts and Sciences. We support students to acquire knowledge and technology in response to the demands of the times and enriched humanities during the four years at NIMS. The Institute's mission is to offer quality education in the allied health professions, enabling the students to stay on the highly advanced and specialized medicine. The spirit of foundation, "Repayment of kindness with gratitude," handed down since the Group's beginning, lies at the core of the Institute's educational efforts. The Institute believes that it is no longer enough to provide programs for students to be equipped with knowledge and skills. Students are expected to acquire skills to assist the clients in the increasingly fractionalized clinical sites fully. The Institute provides an inter-professional learning environment with the participating disciplines, including nursing, radiological technology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and clinical engineering. It is of primary importance to foster heart-to-heart communication skills as true medical professionals. The Nihon Institute of Medical Science is highly aware of the graveness of the health hazards caused by smoking and strives to develop medical professionals who protect those around them. At the Nihon Institute of Medical Science, we educate and train healthcare and medical specialists who work directly with human lives. Our prohibition of smoking on all campus grounds has been highly praised by the medical institutions that employ our graduates. View full university
  19. Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST) is a Japanese national university* located in Kansai Science City, a border region between Nara, Osaka, and Kyoto. Founded in 1991, NAIST consists solely of graduate schools in three integrated areas: information science, biological sciences, and materials science. The university's objectives are to conduct cutting-edge research in frontier areas and train students to become tomorrow's science and technology leaders. NAIST was established in 1991 as a new type of national graduate school, one without undergraduate programs, with three graduate schools focusing on advancing information, biological, and materials sciences, central to our society in the 21st century. Since that time, we have promoted internationally-recognized research in these three fields and their interdisciplinary fusion areas as an 'institution for experimenting' while effectively carrying out human resource development through a highly-organized graduate school education curriculum results of this research. To this date, NAIST has sent 7,600 master's and 1,500 doctoral program graduates into society, and they are active as researchers and engineers throughout various fields in the world. Additionally, we have sent out numerous young researchers who studied and trained at NAIST to significant universities around Japan as professors and associate professors. This contribution to education and research at the forefront of science and technology is a distinguishing feature of NAIST's activities. Looking back at the 25 years of education and research that has been performed since NAIST's beginnings, we can see that the institute's activities have been highly evaluated, not only through concrete statistics but also through the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's (MEXT) national institution education and research achievement evaluations. For example, NAIST was chosen by MEXT as one of 22 institutions to participate in the Program for Promoting the Enhancement of Research Universities, which began in 2013 to strengthen further the research prowess of institutions with considerable achievements. Furthermore, in 2014 the institute was chosen along with 36 other institutions to participate in the Top Global University Project, which actively supports institutions that lead internationalization within Japan. Today, globalization is being called for across all areas of society. Globalization on our campus is being carried out through the support of these two projects. Collaboration in both education and research with prominent institutions from around the globe is being enhanced. Concerning education, NAIST has established international offices in Indonesia and Thailand to serve as collaborative centers. More than 20% of NAIST's student population consists of students from diverse areas and countries. We plan to encourage growth in the international population further to promote development in our global community. Concerning research, NAIST is strengthening its strategic collaborative pursuits with North American, European, and other institutions. Our professors have established and are leading two satellite laboratories at foreign institutes (France and USA). Three collaborative research laboratories have been established at NAIST and are being led by foreign institutions (USA, France, Canada) faculty, and we are beginning collaborative research involving students. Along with these developments, NAIST is sending young researchers abroad for one-year research and education opportunities to encourage and facilitate their global development and activities. Collaboration with private industry and other non-academic institutions is also a significant priority. NAIST is collaborating strategically with the industry aiming at innovation creation to determine future issues that society will face aggressive research efforts at solving these individual issues. We are currently working with three corporations in Collaborative Research toward Future Innovation projects to create new collaborative research approaches to develop new approaches for interdisciplinary fusion fields. Science and technology are currently facing a revolutionary era. At NAIST, we have focused on world-leading research in the three fields of information, biological, and materials sciences, and their interdisciplinary areas, and focused on the production of talented researchers and engineers during the 25 years since establishment, while also continuously redefining what the 'forefront of science and technology' is during that same time, In order to create an education and research organization that can respond flexibly to that evolving forefront of science and technology, NAIST has shifted to a one graduate school system to stress the enhancement of interdisciplinary education in April 2018. With this shift, in addition to the 'Program in Information Science and Engineering,' 'Program in Biological Sciences' and the 'Program in Materials Science and Engineering' which correspond to the education and curriculum of the three previous graduate schools, the 'Program in Computational Biology,' 'Program in Bionanotechnology,' 'Program in Intelligent Cyber-Physical Systems,' and the 'Program in Data Sciences' have been established as interdisciplinary educational programs. In our pursuit of a growing global presence, this shift to one graduate school is the enormous challenge NAIST has faced since its establishment. View full university

Holding about 40 percent of students from different corners of the world activates interactions among students to acquire globalized senses and language proficiency. Students can enjoy and learn from diversity on campus as effectively as in the case of studying abroad. This feature is a JAIST advantage. Intellectual toughness, in short, is a power of challenge to seek much broader experience and knowledge. It also requires an ability to cope with any unknown situation and communicate with others regardless of any difference in cultural backgrounds. Intellectual toughness necessitates strong willpower not to give up in difficult situations too. Being a graduate institute without the undergraduate program, all the JAIST students are from other universities, like Japanese students from all over Japan from Hokkaido to Okinawa and international students from 32 countries. This diversity provides an ideal environment for our students to develop their intellectual toughness. The United Kingdom is one of the most prosperous countries in industry collaboration, and Oxford and Cambridge are the leading universities in its collaboration. These universities are ranked in the first and second rankings while heavily committing to promoting industrial collaboration. JAIST directs its efforts in activating industrial collaboration by adopting needs-oriented research. We also invite researchers from industries to our master students' mid-term presentations and gain industrial perspectives to enhance student learning. We also organize an annual event called "Matching Hub" to provide an opportunity for both companies and universities to match their needs and seeds for new products and projects. View full university
  22. "The 21st Century is the era of Photonics" - we often encounter such statements. Chitose Institute of Science and Technology (CIST) primary purpose is to offer a unique educational experience that will lead students to an advanced level in the knowledge and techniques of the photonic sciences, which will undoubtedly be in the vanguard of technological progress in the 21st Century. CIST is what is called "A Publicly-funded and Privately-run College," which was founded by the City of Chitose in 1998 and has been under the private management of a university corporation. We have endeavored to produce and send many able persons with our society research results to bear fruit there and bring the benefit back to CIST. We have also kept trying to help the students to build up their character here. In commemoration of CIST's 10th anniversary, we collected voluntary contributions and built an additional facility for environmental improvement. As a specialist university, CIST has only one faculty. Faculty of Photonics Science consists of three departments: Department of Applied Chemistry and Bioscience, Department of Opto-Electronic System Engineering, and Department of Infomation Systems Engineering. In April 2002, the CIST Graduate School was launched, and CIST has built a solid foundation as a center of excellence for Photonics Science. Photonics Science and Technology is a beautiful and challenging field to create a flourishing and sustainable human world in the 21st Century. You can study a wide variety of subjects such as history, economics, foreign languages, etc., for general education and electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, information processing, etc., as specialized subjects. However, it is impossible to master all things. College provides an awareness of academia's world to you, and you study an introduction to the world. However, mastering introductory courses is not good enough to make use of the knowledge for society. We recommend that you study one of the subjects deeply that you get interested in. When you master one, you will gain confidence, and you will be able to start another field of study quickly, whenever you have a need, after leaving school. We are promoting lots of assistance, such as e-learning, to help you with self-directed learning. Communication with friends is also an essential element of college life. It is a unique experience to improve your power of expression to let your friends know your opinion through communication with them and to cultivate your sociality through knowing the difference in value and the abilities you do not have. As Darwin said, the most intelligent or the strongest one cannot always survive, but the one who deals with changes in the environment can survive, which also holds human society. We hope all of you develop your strength, realize your weakness, learn here as the place you gain the power to respond to changes, and leave here as decent members of society. View full university
