  2. At Houston Christian, students can do more, learn more, experience more, and be more. Our mission sets us apart. Students are not merely and only defined as athletes, scholars, or artists. Instead, they are allowed to discover, expand, and hone their talents to glorify God. We can fulfill your desires for your student's high school years through our small class sizes, competitive sports, more than 20 fine and performing arts courses, free inquiry in classroom discussion, and 16 Advanced Placement courses. Students, we know that you will be leaders of and change agents in our world, and you will do so with the experiences you have had on your educational journey. Houston Christian established and defined five leadership dimensions incorporated into every facet and level of curriculum. If a school claims to be dedicated to equipping students to be leaders for the future, students must be given the tools needed to meet that goal! We know we are meeting our students' needs in 21st-century education to carry them not just to college but ultimately to their life-calling. A Christ-filled community and stellar academics are not mutually exclusive at Houston Christian but integrated fully and without compromise. Whether we like it or not, all schools transmit values. A Houston Christian education has relevance because it helps students build a moral compass – Good or bad, our teens learn moral standards from the people who surround them. Many schools lack the freedom to define these values or take a neutral stance. We believe there is no such thing. All educators take a position in the way they live and work before young people. Even the absence of faith is a faith-based decision. Our community is widely diverse, with families representing all walks of life from Houston and surrounding areas. Despite our various backgrounds, we share a shared vision to serve our city, state, and nation through impactful leadership. As home to The George and Barbara Bush Center for Scholars and Leaders, all who visit or attend Houston Christian have unparalleled access to the life and legacy of the 41st president. With established leadership courses and an integrated approach through all disciplines, Houston Christian is a center of learning like no other in the world. A Houston Christian education goes beyond a transference of knowledge. It develops a rich culture of learning and inquiry that has produced National Merit Scholars, Fulbright Scholars, perfect SAT and ACT scores, and graduates who attend the most esteemed university. Also, our graduating classes regularly receive more than $7 million in collegiate scholarships. Our alumni frequent corporate boardrooms, Broadway stages, courtrooms, pulpits, and classrooms around the world. We take pride in our students' success and look forward to celebrating future graduates as they positively contribute to communities around the globe through their careers and service. The school utilizes the latest technologies to enhance the learning experience for all students. The cornerstone of the technology program is the one-to-one laptop initiative. All students have a laptop computer that provides access to online curriculum resources. Laptops operate in an 802.11n environment that allows wireless access to the Internet and the internal network from locations across the campus. In addition to the one-to-one laptop initiative, the campus technology program includes classroom projectors, printers, document cameras, SMARTBoards, and a business-class network that incorporates both industry and educational software titles. Our campus's heart and soul are the students who walk its halls while exploring what God has for their future. We encourage all Houston Christian students to try different interests and pursuits and enjoy the world God gave to them. Regardless of where a student's interest lies, they can build lasting friendships that will encourage them through the rest of their lives.

University of Houston researchers and inventors are transforming ideas into innovations. Our innovators are developing new technologies that span across the delivery of healthcare to harnessing our natural resources. We are also thought leaders around creating art and designing programs that support our diverse Houston community. The University of Houston's proud heritage of academic excellence dates back to its founding in 1927. In 1947, the institution launched one of its many rich traditions by adopting the cougar, later named Shasta, as its official mascot. Over the years, we grew and prospered, becoming the University of Houston in 1934. Two years later, the institution acquired land for a permanent campus, and its first building opened in 1939. The university became a state institution in 1963 and joined the newly created University of Houston System in 1977. Today, the University of Houston is significant public research and teaching institution, serving more than 39,800 students annually with nearly 300 undergraduate and graduate programs. 4. Founded in 1970, Houston Academy (HA) is southeast Alabama's premier college preparatory school. HA is the only independent school in the region that focuses on college preparation and global education. Students who come to Houston Academy seek a well-rounded educational experience that includes a strong emphasis on challenging academics, community involvement, athletics, and the arts. Houston Academy is an independent college preparatory institution. Our mission is to prepare all our students for responsible participation in a global society by providing an excellent learning environment and opportunities to achieve their highest academic, social, and creative potential. There is an important distinction to be made between the term "private" and the term "independent." The term "private" implies some exclusivity. As such, "private" schools are often affiliated with a particular religious order, and in that sense, are not entirely free to set their educational path. Often, to work at a private school or attend a private school, you must adhere to a specific worldview or be a member of a particular religious denomination. "Independent," on the other hand, means that we are inclusive and welcoming of all people, regardless of religion, race, creed, national origin, or socioeconomic status. That is not to say that we do not embrace faith or religion – we do. However, in independent schools like HA, we embrace our community's diversity and attempt to learn from our differences and build on our students' and faculty's strengths. This means that the goal of preparing our students to be successful in college and life is at the core of everything we do. As such, we are the only school in the Wiregrass with the explicit mission of college preparation. We are unapologetically rigorous, and we hold our students and teachers accountable to an unwaveringly high standard of excellence. At the same time, we provide a loving and nurturing environment where our students receive the support they need to be successful. At Houston Academy, we understand that our students are entering an increasingly connected world. This requires imparting a skill set for our students that goes far beyond classical educational traditions. Our students must be 21st Century Learners. They must learn to collaborate, communicate effectively, engage in creative reflection and thought, think critically, possess enduring moral character, and have strong cross-cultural competence. To this end, we are the only school in the Wiregrass that is a 1:1 MacBook school in grades 5-12, and we are the only school that has integrated interactive projectors and iPads throughout our lower school curriculum. We seek to move beyond rote learning and meaningless memorization (methods that were the classical educational model) to higher-level thinking on Bloom's Taxonomy. Also, we offer four World and Classical Languages (German, French, Latin, and Spanish). We offer Spanish starting with our four-year-old preschoolers, and we will expand our middle-grades and lower-grades language offerings very soon. Each student has individual strengths that we seek to recognize and enhance. All of our students go to college, but they are musicians, actors, community volunteers, tutors, dancers, and artists. Despite our small size, it is not unusual for HA to lead the Wiregrass in the number of students selected for All-State Band and Chorus. Furthermore, our student art has received regional acclaim, and community service is not only required for graduation; it is a central part of what we do. Houston Academy is committed to providing the best technology resources and solutions supporting the school's mission and the Strategic Plan. Houston Academy seeks to utilize technology as the essential, transformational tool of the digital age. State-of-the-art technology tools integrated into our curriculum offer our students a comprehensive 21st-century education. At the beginning of the 2012-13 school year, an initiative began that provided students in kindergarten through fourth grades 1:1 access to iPads. In December, all students in grades 5-12 were issued MacBook laptops 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Houston Academy is the first school in the Wiregrass area to provide all K-12 students 1:1 access to these mobile learning devices. Our teachers and administrators are involved in ongoing training provided by Apple, Inc., and our technical staff. Full-day services and after-school training sessions provide faculty and staff the opportunity to learn both software apps and new and exciting ways to integrate these excellent learning devices into their classrooms. We believe that technology allows teachers to differentiate learning, connect with students with different learning styles, and create an environment where students learn to work collaboratively. 6. Our calling as a Christian school is not to offer an alternative program to the public school system. Those of us, who have committed our vocational careers to Christian education, firmly believe in all parents' great calling. Deuteronomy 6 tells us that we are to train our children to love the LORD with all their hearts, soul, mind, and strength. Ultimately, we seek to prepare our young people for an increasingly secular world. Kenneth Coley (2006) discusses this concept in his book The Helmsman: leading with courage and wisdom. "Our ultimate goal for our children must be for each one to view all of life from a scripture-centered perspective rather than a human-centered perspective that is taught in secular schools. This does not mean that our school is a safe and isolating bubble that prevents interaction with a more fantastic world. Christian education should promote critical thinking and provide a safe environment for students to ask questions to seek answers. If we send our children to HCS to protect them from worldly affairs, our purpose is incomplete. We should be choosing Christian education because we believe wholeheartedly in what the Bible says in Proverbs 22:6, which instructs parents to train their children in the way he should go. We are blessed in our community because we see ourselves as assisting parents to teach their children a biblical Christian worldview. We hope that all our graduates leave HCS prepared to be salt and light in a world that is increasingly bitter and dark. Welcome to Houston Christian School! It is our prayer that your years in Grades K-6 will be pleasant, that the days and weeks will be filled with the satisfaction of learning things, with the growth of friendship, with the sounds of singing. Student progress through the school subjects will be formally reported to parents three times on report cards. Telephone calls will be made, and other notes will be sent as necessary. The learning assistance teacher is available to help students experiencing difficulties. Students, teachers, and parents need to work carefully and cooperatively so that each student can make sufficient progress. Students are required to attend school except for illness or other legitimate reasons as determined by parents. Please note the four rules for good schooling on the previous page. Parents are asked to call the school when students are to be kept at home. The office records attendance on the computer to be submitted to The Ministry of Education. The doors will be opened for students to come to school at 8:25 am. Students are to remain on the playground until the bell rings on cold winter days when the temperature is less than -15°C, the principal or a teacher will open the doors so that students can wait for school to begin in the entrance. Recess and noon-hour are good times for most students. Playing together is easy and fun, but it needs lots of respect for each other. Young Christians need to watch out for weaker students, for those that are shy, and for those who find it hard to make friends. Always treat others with kindness and friendliness. Do not make fun of them, do not call them names do not push or hurt them. Once at school, students must not leave the school grounds until it is time to go home. Elementary students are not permitted to go to nearby stores at recess, noon-hour or while waiting for the bus or ride home. Students in grades 7-10 must take the classes presented in the course schedule. Students in grades 7-8 are required to take French and Fine Arts by Provincial Policy--unless an Individual Education Plan (IEP) is on file in the office. Students in grades 11-12 will be asked to make course selections for the following school year from a list of choices every spring. The course list will vary from year to year as student interest and teacher expertise change. Of the courses offered, only those with sufficient enrollment will be offered. A student can become a Secondary School Apprentice. A student accepted into this program can have his or her hours at work count for high school graduation credits and towards completion of an apprenticeship. To be accepted into the program, the student needs a job under a journeyman apprentice's supervision. Students also have the option of enrolling in Distance Education courses depending on their interests and need.

Houston Baptist College was created by the Baptist General Convention of Texas's action on November 15, 1960, culminating many years of work and study. The aim of the College founders was the establishment of a Christian College of the highest order in the city of Houston that stressed the quality of life as well as the quality of learning. In 1952, the Union Baptist Association authorized a committee to study the possibility of locating a Baptist College in Houston. With the Education Commission of the Baptist General Convention of Texas's assistance and encouragement, the committee surveyed in 1955. Acting upon information obtained with the Education Commission's endorsement, the Association approved the concept of establishing a new College. In 1956, the Executive Board of the Baptist General Convention of Texas approved a recommendation that Houston Baptists be given assurance that the Convention would support such a College when the College Committee of the Union Baptist Association had succeeded in acquiring both (1) a good site for a campus of at least one hundred acres, and (2) a minimum corpus of at least three million dollars. Of this sum, one and one-half million dollars would constitute a nucleus endowment fund one, and one-half million dollars would be designated for a physical plant. View full university
  8. View full school

Sam Houston State University, located in Huntsville, Texas, is a member of The Texas State University System. The school was created by the Texas Legislature in 1879 as Sam Houston Normal Institute to educate teachers for Texas's public schools. The baccalaureate degree was first awarded in 1919. In 1923, the institution's name was changed to Sam Houston State Teachers College. Two years later, the college was admitted to membership in the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) as an accredited institution of higher learning. A graduate degree was authorized in 1936, and the curriculum was expanded to emphasize preparation in various fields. Following World War II, an increase in students and faculty and a wide range of faculty-research activities provided the impetus for the continued emergence of a multi-purpose institution. In recognition of these developments, the institution's name was changed by the Texas Legislature to Sam Houston State College in 1965. The number of graduate degrees conferred increased significantly in the late 1960s and the Texas Legislature, recognizing the changes that had taken place, changed the institution's name to Sam Houston State University in 1969. In the 1970s, the University was granted permission to offer its first doctorate, a Ph.D. in criminal justice. This program grew to be one of the largest and most recognized doctoral programs in the country. In the 1980s and 1990s, the University completed several academic, athletic, and support facilities. With the improvement of faculty and facilities, the University set a vision to become one of the country's best regional universities. During the last five years of the twentieth century, the University expanded its reach by offering programs online, at The Woodlands in a multi-institutional teaching center, and various other off-campus sites. In 2000, the University expanded its building program and committed resources to develop and maintain nationally-recognized academic support programs. Sam Houston State University increased the number of doctoral programs, including programs in education and psychology, and experienced a tremendous enrollment and name recognition surge. Currently, Sam Houston State University is organized academically into five colleges: Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, Criminal Justice, Education, and Humanities and Social Sciences. Students are offered an extensive range of bachelor's and master's degrees and doctorates in selected areas. The faculty and the University are recognized regionally, nationally, and internationally. 10.

These areas are managed by full-time, live-in staff members, including professional Residence Life Coordinators, faculty-in-residence, and Resident Advisors (student staff).
