About Me

  1. Parker provides our students, and our society, with a specific, invaluable and sustainable resource: Educated people who identify themselves as creative citizens capable of thinking for themselves and listening to others—especially to those who with whom they may disagree—in ways that inspire them to apply their idealism in pragmatic ways as they think critically and act collaboratively to solve problems facing our world. Choosing a school is one of the most important decisions you will make. Parker's passion for education emanates from our desire to know all students and guide them in their learning and development to become authentic, compelling, responsible, and empathic citizens and leaders in our democracy and the wider world. At Parker, we affirm each person's dignity and inspire all to learn and grow to make a difference in the world. Our teachers are attuned to how each student learns to grow in character, talent, and confidence as knowledgeable, skilled, and creative problem-solvers to uphold this mission. By knowing who our students are—and with an emerging sense of whom they aspire to be—and by mentoring them through their development, our teachers curate a culture where curiosity and respect for oneself and others drive inquiry and joy, resilience, and optimism shape student experience. From the earliest ages, Parker students learn with others and gain real-world, practical experience speaking in public, finding their voice, learning how to listen attentively to others, reflecting on what they are learning, and working collaboratively in groups, all skills that will serve them throughout their lives. Our engaging progressive approach to teaching and learning provides all students with the quantitative, interpretive, analytic, and artistic experiences that allow them to acquire the skills that will help them develop their interests and apply what they are learning in ways that benefit the broader community of which they are a valued part. At Parker, we are confident that our democracy will continue to need citizens and leaders who have the intellectual, social, and emotional dispositions to think for themselves, hear other perspectives, ground their views in facts, maintain patience in the face of complexity and ambiguity and act on their convictions to provide insight, understanding and empathic, courageous leadership in addressing the pressing challenges of our times. Our democracy is diverse, and because excellent problem-solving results from including a diversity of perspectives, a Parker education is grounded in our commitment to composing the school with people who have different backgrounds, cultures, stories, beliefs, and identities and in our strategies to provide equitable access for all students to the richness of our educational opportunities. It is essential that all students feel included in their classroom learning and develop a genuine sense of belonging to their school community. Francis W. Parker School educates students to think and act with empathy, courage, and clarity as responsible citizens and leaders in a diverse democratic society and global community. We treasure the respectful ways students, teachers, staff, parents, and alumni come to know one another through their work and studies, empowering each individual and our community with hope and possibility. We understand how history, culture, and society shape our individual and shared experiences. We appreciate how our unique identities develop through our relationships with others, our own inner lives, surroundings, and the world of ideas. Our school nurtures authenticity and trust as we inspire each student to be a creative citizen, capable and dedicated to upholding Parker's mission. We are deliberately composed of a diverse group of people committed to equity and inclusion throughout the school. We create learning experiences through curriculum and pedagogy that resonate with the many different identities that our community comprises, making us useful citizens who honor every human being's dignity. We are an intimate and expansive school that affirms the ways students can flourish when they feel known, appreciated, and supported by equitable access to the fullness of a Parker education. Our school thrives when we each can acquire and contribute to the creation of new knowledge and skills, explore our imaginations and different perspectives, share whom we are becoming, and expect to be treated with respect and kindness when expressing our ideas, famous or not, while also learning to confront behaviors that oppress, exclude or demean the humanity of others. We pursue educational excellence by cultivating creative problem-solving through vigorous effort so all can experience joy in learning and come to understand how individual and collective labor can improve society. We grow in intellectual, emotional, physical, aesthetic, and moral life through our attuned approaches to responsive teaching and mentoring. We learn from one another as we participate fully in spirited, rigorous, reflective, and ethical engagement in all areas of study and activity, curricular, and extracurricular. We seek purpose, meaning, and impact through the content and methods that inform our learning and teaching. Our academic and artistic standards for interdisciplinary inquiry flow from classroom learning to life throughout the school and beyond.

  5. Not sure about who we are, or what we do? First, let’s start with our Mission is to: cultivate a joyful, compassionate, intellectual community that celebrates individuality and inspires independent thinking for life. Our Vision is that: St. Francis School is the regional center of progressive learning where students grow into mindful, informed young adults. And, our Core Values are Individuality, Inclusivity, Community, Thought, Openness, Expression, Curiosity. The philosophy of St. Francis School is rooted in the Progressive education tradition. Fundamentally we believe that each student enjoys strengths and faces challenges and that each one must be treated as an individual. Emphasizing active, experiential learning, problem-solving, self-expression, critical thinking, collaboration, and healthy discussion and debate in every classroom, St. Francis effectively prepares young people for the challenges of higher education, civic involvement, and successful lives as adults. As a community composed of people of diverse backgrounds, beliefs, and life experiences, we ask of all our members that the tolerance, respect, and imagination required for responsible citizenship and global understanding be elements of daily practice. Throughout our program, students learn the ethical dimensions of issues, enabling them to use their talent and knowledge with wisdom, compassion, creativity, and integrity. At St. Francis, we believe there is inherent strength in a community, a city, and a world in which members exhibit a breadth of talent, skills, and attributes. We define diversity as differences embodied in (but not limited to) age, ethnicity, race, family composition, gender, gender identity, and expression, geographic origin, learning styles, religion, sexual orientation, socio-economics, and ideologies. We seek to prepare the student to live in and contribute to their world by acknowledging and celebrating who they are and who they wish to become. In addition, given the fact of profound inequalities of opportunity that still exist in our world, we strive to foster a respectful and welcoming school community for us all as a model for the challenges that face us each day as global citizens. We believe that all areas of development – social-emotional, physical, and cognitive – are equally important and interrelated. We use a developmental continuum framework and skill setlist to guide us in preparing the learning environment, planning classroom experiences, teaching, and interacting with our students. Our teachers build on the natural curiosities of young children and their interests while incorporating areas such as literacy, science, mathematics, creative expression, and the arts. Physical Education provides each student the opportunity to acquire knowledge about the relationship between quality exercise and a healthy body. The primary goal is to develop students’ fundamental movement skills within a variety of developmentally appropriate games, locomotor and manipulative skills, and other activities. Personal and social responsibility, self-directed learning, and problem-solving skills are also reinforced throughout the curriculum. Our Middle School Outdoor Education Program provides safe and structured educational experiences designed to inspire self-esteem, self-reliance, concern for others, and care for the environment. It is intentionally designed to allow students the opportunity to meet challenges and move beyond self-imposed limitations through responsible risk-taking and hands-on involvement. 6. Young people thrive here. The St. Francis High School educational experience is exceptional. Our uniquely supportive learning environment cultivates faith and character development, along with intellectual growth. Students engage in the learning process with teachers who are as passionate about their students' welfare as they are about their subject matter. Students are known by name among their peers and their teachers. Students from more than 50 regional grade schools become friends with each other. We partner with families to help nurture our students' spiritual growth, the heart of Catholic education. And jointly, we strive to guide our students toward living the Gospel values, which will make a difference in their world. St. Francis High School is a Catholic, college-preparatory learning community that promotes spiritual, academic, physical, and social development in the daily presence of Jesus Christ. Rooted in the Roman Catholic tradition and the charisms of St. Francis of Assisi, the St. Francis High School community's people seek to live as disciples of Jesus Christ through the cultivation of our faith by loving God and serving others. St. Francis High School advances the educational ministry of the Roman Catholic Church. We are faithful to Christ and the spiritual teachers who represent Him on earth, the Pope, and the Bishops. Our teachers adapt to various instructional methodologies, assist students beyond class hours, engage students through mobile learning, and promote student achievement. 100% of our students graduate and are college-bound, earning acceptances at more than 350 colleges and universities throughout the last five years. The choice of where to attend high school is an important one for every family. At St. Francis High School, we understand that your final decision involves many factors, including the academic program, co-curricular opportunities, size of the school, Catholic formation, cost, and discipline program. Our vision is to develop integrity in becoming faith-filled, responsible, respectful citizens of the world committed to Christian service. We believe St. Francis High School is an outstanding choice for the right student and family that appreciate our profound challenge of education today, meeting the spiritual, academic, physical, and social development of young adults. As a Catholic college preparatory, secondary school, St. Francis High School prepares students as a learning community to become critical thinkers and faith-filled, responsible adults. Our teachers work hard to meet the demanding needs of our students. This work requires each teacher to be adaptable to various instructional methodologies, be available for student assistance beyond the regular class hours, and be promoters of student achievement. The classroom teachers accept the challenge of working with colleagues, parents, and students to affect their students' Christian formation and academic education. The St. Francis High School experience is unlike any other. Here, we balance academic excellence with a warm, dynamic environment where people know your name and want to help one another. Our high school size is ideal, encouraging students to engage academically and lead through participation. We respect that young men and women learn in many ways. And we cultivate character as well as classroom success. Rooted in the Roman Catholic tradition and St. Francis of Assisi's charisms, we are committed to helping students understand who they are as young Catholic men and women. We offer Communion daily, pray together in class, celebrate mass, and extend ourselves through retreats, campus ministry, and service. Each St. Francis High School student completes 60 hours of Christian service, as we strive to build habits of serving those in need and pursuing spiritual growth and truth. St. Francis High School graduates well-rounded, socially responsible young adults. Academically focused and confident, they earn placement at excellent colleges and universities. And when they return, our alumni say St. Francis High School fortified them to succeed in college and as leaders in our culture.
  7. St. Francis High School is a Catholic college preparatory school for boys in grades 9-12. Since its founding by the Capuchin Franciscan friars in 1946, St. Francis has remained committed to enriching the mind and heart, strengthening respect through service and humility, creating a brotherhood, and envisioning men of virtue and peace. It offers a challenging academic curriculum, a competitive athletic program, and a wide variety of extracurricular involvement opportunities. St. Francis is fully accredited by WASC and the WCEA. St. Francis High School provides a Catholic college preparatory education in the Capuchin Franciscan tradition of love and discipline. We enrich the mind and the heart through the teachings of Jesus Christ and Francis of Assisi. We strengthen the Franciscan values of respect for others and self through humility and service to the poor. We create a brotherhood for young men of diverse backgrounds. We envision a Franciscan education not as an end in itself but as a means of forging men of virtue. We seek to develop our students' qualities of mind and heart necessary for mature living in the spiritual and temporal world. In addition to preparing students for university life rigors, our curriculum and community life cultivate intellectual, emotional, physical, and spiritual growth, responsible citizenship, social awareness, and aesthetic appreciation. Inspired by the humility and love of Jesus Christ, Francis cherished, and promoted a deep appreciation of being "lesser." Loyal followers of Christ are always to be distinguished by their humility and service, especially to the poor and marginalized. We, too, cherish and foster these essential qualities by encouraging students, faculty, and staff to develop the deep, mutual respect that precludes divisiveness and elitism. We seek to expand our affinity for our community to embrace a richer, more meaningful affinity with the love of Christ for all humankind. The Franciscan tradition's hallmark is love - particularly God's love, as reflected in all creation. Thus, the Franciscan charism includes promoting harmony, unity, and love in every human institution, the most fundamental of the family. The St. Francis "family spirit" embraces not only individual students' families but also faculty, staff, administration, and alumni, as well as the Christian community at large. Our school family develops its sense of interconnectedness by participating in Church life activities - daily prayer, special liturgical celebration, the sacraments, retreats, and our four-year religion curriculum. St. Francis High School works to realize the Church's vision of God's kingdom on Earth by participating in the Roman Catholic Church's teaching mission through the lens of the Franciscan virtues. St. Francis students are also encouraged to become good stewards to all of God's creation and appreciate their education as a means to college and career and as training for a life of service. As instruments of peace, they will build God's kingdom through example. St. Francis High School is a member of the International Boys School Coalition (IBSC), a not-for-profit organization of schools dedicated to the education and development of boys worldwide, the professional growth of those who work with them, and the advocacy and advancement of institutions - primarily schools for boys - that serve them. The goal of the IBSC is to support, advance, and celebrate boys' schools as learning environments uniquely focused on the achievement, engagement, and well-being of boys in their care. Our schools are devoted to the mission of supporting boys in all facets of their growth and education. As such, the IBSC is a genuinely global "learning community" for educators in boys' schools and those committed to boys' education everywhere. A commitment to integrity and a strong ethical foundation are a school's priorities, and educating students about how to become a good man informs every aspect of the day. Some schools do this teaching with an official code of conduct. Others have developed a formal character education curriculum. A great many teach critical values through their faith-based affiliations. Often it is the experience of performing with the orchestra or playing on the soccer team that affords a lesson in courage, perseverance, or teamwork. Each initiative is strengthened by outstanding faculty who model ethical behavior daily and by student leaders, peer counselors, and other mentors. Boys learn that there are clear expectations to do what is right. They also learn that there are many routes to becoming a good man. Most schools have a service-learning program that encourages students to work within the greater community to help others. At some schools, those programs are conducted with area girls' schools, allowing boys to interact in a respectful and supportive way with their female peers.

  22. St. Francis Xavier School is a Catholic Independent School of the Vancouver Archdiocese. It is a dual-stream elementary school, established by St. Francis Xavier Parish, and it follows the policies and procedures recommended by the Catholic Independent School Board. Our school enrollment consists of 440 students with a class size of approximately 28 students. The Grey Sisters of the Immaculate Conception from Pembroke, Ontario, founded St. Francis Xavier School in 1933. A house and land were purchased from a donation at Georgia Street and Princess Avenue in Vancouver’s Chinatown. A Kindergarten was opened in one of the house rooms with the first-class consisting of 30 Kindergarten students. The Kindergarten was then moved to another building across the street in 1934. The grade school began in 1938, housed in three rented classrooms on the third story of a bank building at the corner of Main and East Pender Street. There were three grades in each classroom with a total enrolment of merely 30 students. In 1940, the first school building, located at the corner of East Georgia Street and Princess Avenue, was constructed to accommodate 70 students. Over the years, the school population had outgrown the school building to such an extent that more than half of the students had to be housed in various rented buildings. Another building was later acquired on East Pender Street. The parish and school fundraised for over 20 years to build a new school. The construction then took another two years to complete when finally, in 2001, the current school building at 428 Great Northern Way was completed. Operations began in September 2001. Most Reverend Adam Exner, OMI, Archbishop of Vancouver, blessed the new school on December 2, 2001.
  23. St Francis Catholic Primary School exists to help the parents to bring up their children in the Catholic Faith in the context of a good education. It is central to our mission that every child matters as a unique gift from God. As a Christian community, we aim to develop the whole child within an ethos of faith, love, care, and respect. Our mission is to provide high quality: Catholic teaching and learning Catholic worship Education delivered by inspirational staff Opportunities that encourage all to become independent and responsible St. Francis Catholic Primary School is a two-form entry primary school. The new building was built in 1970 on a site adjacent to the original St Francis School, which was a four-story Victorian building. The school is set in pleasant grounds which consist of gardens and three playgrounds - KS2, KS1 & Nursery. In the immediate vicinity are many Local Authority Housing estates and small local shops. At present, the gender mix in school is almost equal. There are slightly more girls than boys. We have a wide cultural mix, with many children of African origin, some children of Caribbean descent, and several South American, European, and British families. Children start the main school in Reception, during the year in which they are 5. Each September thereafter the children move to the next class in Years 1 through to 6 - this numbering system forms part of the structure of the National Curriculum. When a child completes Year 6 at St Francis they will join a secondary school for Year 7. We are committed to providing a teaching environment conducive to learning. Each child is valued, respected, and challenged regardless of ability, race, gender, religion, social background, culture, or disability. The children are encouraged to develop non-discriminatory attitudes and expectations about themselves, their role in the school, and society in general. The curriculum provided at St Francis Catholic is based on the values and aims of the school. It incorporates a strong emphasis on personal, social, health and citizenship education. The school curriculum, whilst placing a high priority on the basic skills of literacy and numeracy, is broad and balanced, promoting the spiritual, moral, social, cultural, mental, and physical development of pupils through PSHCE and PE. At St Francis, the aim is to provide the very best possible start to every child’s education and enable them to fulfill their potential. A stimulating, secure environment is provided, where children are encouraged to develop key learning skills. A broad-based, high-quality curriculum is provided to all pupils based on the guidance for the Early Years Foundation Stage Revised Framework. Well-planned, structured activities and opportunities for children to discover and be curious are provided within the classroom and outdoor learning area. Reading is key to your child making good overall progress throughout their time in Our Early Years. The more stories we as adults share with a child the more words we are exposing them to. The more we repeat those stories and those words the more your child will pick up that language and then in turn will explore using that language. How can we expect a child to write a story of their own unless they have been exposed to lots of different stories and settings? Reading stories helps to feed your child’s imagination and also their range of language they can use in daily life. The more experiences we offer our children the more likely they are to question the world in which they live and learn more! At St Francis Catholic Primary School we believe that developing an investigative, problem-solving approach to learning, assists pupils to achieve high standards and gain life skills. At St. Francis, we recognize that English is a vital component in concept formation in all areas of the curriculum. We aim to develop each child's ability to understand, communicate, interpret and appreciate the world around him/her. The English program at St. Francis promotes the four key components: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. We aim to teach all pupils: To listen attentively with understanding and appreciation. To speak confidently and clearly, and to use appropriate language for different occasions. To read fluently and accurately with understanding, enjoyment, feeling, and discrimination. To communicate in writing with confidence, pleasure, and a sense of purpose, for a wide range of audiences. To write competently by developing the skills of handwriting, spelling, punctuation, syntax, and usage. We encourage the children to use a cursive script when writing. At St. Francis, we believe that Religion is a relationship, a relationship of love between the child and God, and between the child and other people: in a community. Religious Education fosters this relationship through daily prayer, Acts of Worship, and Celebrations of Liturgy. As a whole school, we follow the national Catholic R.E. scheme entitled ‘Come and See’. Links are made with the pupils’ own experiences and with universal experience. Links are also made with the experiences of other faith traditions to promote tolerance and mutual respect. The program is, therefore, both ‘objective’ and ‘subjective’. It presents a systematic presentation of the Christian event, message, and way of life, in contexts appropriate to the age and stage of development of each child.
  24. Our school motto is “Non-Accident” or “Shall Not Fail”. It is taken from our patron St Francis de Sales’ Episcopal coat of arms. This mantra inspires and sustains the determination to fulfill our core values and intentions. Service is, we believe, our fundamental role. As a school, we serve God and the church in faithfulness. We serve the children and the whole school community through our commitment to ensuring the best possible opportunities for success, happiness, and change lives for the better. In so doing we serve society by developing and becoming responsible, confident, and aspirational Christian citizens. Faithfulness encompasses our spiritual relationship with God and the church. We keep Christ’s example at the heart of all we do, with Gospel values to guide us in living out our faith as exemplary role models. Through our work we praise God. Integrity encapsulates a full and unwavering dedication to our mission and each other. When honesty and humility are integral to our actions and choices we have self-respect, dignity, and pride. This makes us worthy of trust and loyalty. Compassion characterizes how we treat all others. This is with kindness, friendship, and respect. Where love is, God is. Values and Traditions of the Catholic Church: Live out and embody the values and traditions of the Catholic Church and through encouraging all to develop their understanding of and relationship with God, prepare our children to become caring, responsible, and respectful Christian members of society. Provide high-quality collective worship and enriching liturgical celebrations. Enable our children to acquire an excellent religious education, through a very well-taught and resourced Come and See program. Have the highest possible expectations and aspirations of each other recognizing and developing our uniqueness and individual talents, knowing that there is no limit to what can be achieved. Provide a broad, balanced, innovative, and challenging curriculum that is relevant to the needs of our children and inspires a love of teaching and lifelong learning. Instill and develop confidence, self-esteem, resilience, and determination rooted in our whole school values. Ensure that all children reach their full potential through effective planning, assessment, and evaluation, which will inform their next steps. Empower all to be responsible and conscientious stewards of our local, national, and global environments through curriculum study and community projects. Ensure everybody, without exception, has the opportunity to succeed and feel part of our school family. In so doing ensure that all feel welcomed, valued, respected, and included. Provide a happy, safe and healthy environment where all feel secure, listened to, and respected. Reading is the foundation and at the heart of all, we do. This shows our vision for reading and the exciting and inspiring ways that we teach and promote reading in our school. We've even written our books - maybe you've read one of them. We aim to Live out and embody the values and traditions of the Catholic Church and through encouraging all to develop their understanding of and relationship with God, prepare our children to become caring, responsible, and respectful Christian members of society. As part of this, we provide high-quality collective worship and enriching liturgical celebrations. These, we believe, enable our children to acquire an excellent religious education, through a very well-taught and resourced Come and See program. We encourage and develop all to be responsible and conscientious stewards of our local, national, and global environments through curriculum study and community projects. We have strong links with the parish community and other partners who help us achieve our mission statement and we work in harmony with them in a spirit of mutual respect and fellowship including other faith communities.
  25. We believe that within our Catholic School we have created a caring, concerned, Christian community, wherein children can develop their full potential in well-ordered stimulating surroundings. We strive to enable our children to become happy, industrious, and well-adjusted members of society. At present we have a roll of 225 pupils and we are looking forward to having you and your child join us in St Francis of Assisi Primary School. Scotland is currently pursuing its biggest education reform program for a generation under the Scottish Government’s Ambitious, Excellent Schools agenda. The Curriculum for Excellence is central to this reform agenda. It aims to provide: More freedom for teachers Greater choice and opportunity for pupils A single coherent curriculum for all young people aged 3-18. Curriculum for Excellence challenges us to think differently about the curriculum. It encourages those working in education to plan and act in new ways. A Curriculum for Excellence is organized into four contexts for learning: Life and ethos of the school as a community Curriculum areas and subjects Interdisciplinary learning Opportunities for personal achievement. In St Francis of Assisi, we plan for every context to ensure a well-balanced approach to learning at every stage. We plan and assess every curricular area and have built opportunities for pupil choice across all stages and curricular areas. Pupils are taught through relevant topics which are responsive to pupil needs and interests. As a result of the Scottish National Debate on Education (2002), A Curriculum for Excellence has become an integral part of the improvement agenda in Scottish Education. Through participative, active classes pupils develop the knowledge, understanding, skills, and attitudes they need to learn about the world around them. The development of literacy skills plays an important role in all learning.
