About Me

  1. The Academy of the Holy Family, a Catholic secondary Day and Boarding school for young women, was founded in 1874 in Baltic, Connecticut. The Academy is approved by the State of Connecticut and is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. It is owned and operated by the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of Our Lady, Mother of the Church. The Order’s General Counsel, along with a new group of stakeholders, forms the Academy’s Advisory Board. Through a challenging curriculum built on a supportive spiritual foundation, we empower young women from the United States and around the globe to achieve their full God-given potential to impact their world. Because of its commitment to any girl who seeks such an environment regardless of ethnic background, country of origin, color, creed, or the economic status of her family, the Academy makes every effort to maintain as low a tuition base as is possible, making quality Catholic education financially feasible. Our work continues, and our mission is maintained. We are committed to guiding our students as they grow into young women of faith, intelligence, and strength. What do girls’ schools do best? A lot! “Whether they want to be astronauts, ambassadors, or accountants, girls need to know- not just think- that nothing can stand in their way.” (National Coalition of Girls’ Schools) This is what we do at the Academy of the Holy Family every day. Tomorrow’s leaders walk in our halls today. Come and see what life is like at the Academy of the Holy Family! We are 146 years old and proud that we cherish our traditions while looking ahead to the future. Whether you are already a member of our school community or are interested in learning more about us as a prospective student, parent/guardian or teacher, we hope that this web presence will enable you to view the enthusiasm and vitality that continues to define the AHF experience as we excitedly prepare to begin our 146th year of delivering a valid education to young women that are based on the Gospel of Christ. At the center of the AHF experience, you will find our students and teachers coming together as a community of teachers and learners in an environment that encourages the development of curious, lifelong learners. In every corner of our beautiful campus and beyond, you will find success stories where students and adults learn from each other and grow together. The walls of traditional classrooms do not contain the cycle of learning, as is evidenced by our participation in online classes. Our dedicated faculty comprises members of the Sisters of Charity of Our Lady, Mother of the Church, and laymen and women. They are all professional educators who understand the challenges of delivering curricula to young women. As an alumna of an all-girl, Catholic high school, I can personally attest to the fact that an education in a setting such as the Academy of the Holy Family is a gift beyond compare. Here is a place where young women’s gifts of leadership are cultivated, the palettes that contain the multitude of their bits of intelligence are celebrated. They are allowed to discover the multitude of possibilities that lie before them. We hope that our website answers as many questions as you might have, but there is genuinely no substitute for visiting the Academy. On behalf of the students, faculty, and staff, I invite you to visit the place that we call “home” to see, firsthand, how we bring such a diverse group of young women together to build one community. Our motto is, “Where friends become family!” Spend some time at AHF, and you will see why generations of young women have made that phrase a reality. The Academy of the Holy Family: where the leaders of tomorrow walk our halls today.
  2. When it comes to education, we all want what is best for our children. Deciding what is best, however, can be a demanding and high-pressure task. After all, the seven years your child spends in primary school will play a pivotal role in forming their character and future. This is a time when their talents and interests will be developed. Holy Family Primary school has undergone significant changes over the last ten years. Over the past year or so, inspiring and committed teachers, pre-school and long day-care centers onsite, a before and after school care, and a vacation program. A massive school building program has enabled Holy Family Primary school to flourish. The school complements the work of parents to promote the personal care and development of each student. Emphasis is placed on relating well with others, being considerate, and contributing as a team's successful member. Leadership is fostered through a peer support program and a senior leadership program. All children also learn the importance of acting responsibly and showing respect for one another and the environment in which they live. Our school in Years 4, 5, and 6 thrive through implementing a 1:1 iPad program. The school offers opportunities for active participation in sports to suit every interest and talent. Morning fitness, inter-school competitions, carnivals, a whole school gymnastics, dance, and swimming program, are all encouraged. Holy Family School is a place that is continually adapting to the changing needs of young people and their world. It is a place where all students can discover who they are and develop the self-confidence to take on new challenges. We are a school where students do not have to fit in because the school fits around them. Our commitment is to unlock every individual student's talents and help them on their way to a lifetime of self-discovery and fulfillment. Holy Family Primary School was opened in 1985 and is situated in Castleton Crescent Gowrie, in the Parish of Corpus Christi. There are three primary schools within the parish. Our sister schools are St Francis of Assisi, located in Calwell, and St Clare of Assisi, Conder. St Mary MacKillop College (Years 7-12) in Waniassa and Isabella Plains enables parents a Catholic high school education for their children. The Parish of Corpus Christi was formed in 2005 when the parishes of Holy Family Gowrie and St Francis of Assisi Calwell were amalgamated. In 2009, the first Catholic pre-school began operation - the Holy Family Early Learning & Care Centre. We grew to 4 classes in 2018 with 100 children. Students from Pre-school to Year 6, who attend the school, primarily come from the suburbs of Chisholm, Fadden, Gilmore, Gowrie, Isabella Plains, Macarthur, and Richardson. Students also live in Jerrabomberra NSW and the rural estate of Burra and Googong. The school has a multicultural population of approximately 660 students (K - Yr 6) and 90 pre-school students. The Presentation Sisters from Wagga Wagga established the school under the dedicated leadership of Sister Audrey Pilgrim. Holy Family quickly fostered a sense of strong community with close relationships developed between parish and school; the school motto, 'Open the Doors to the Redeemer,' epitomizes the ideals of the school and parish communities, and their approach towards making Jesus Christ accessible and relevant to the students who attend the school. The image of the Holy Family represents the notion of community, which is fostered by the members of the school and parish. With this close collaboration between school, family, and parish, Holy Family has developed a cooperative approach towards the students who attend the school. The teachers teach in teams and promote cooperative learning. A Principal administers the school, Assistant Principal, Religious Education Coordinator, Learning Technologies Coordinator, Numeracy Coordinator, Literacy Coordinator, Enrichment Coordinator, Early Learning Centre Director, full-time and part-time teachers and assistants, a Teacher Librarian, and Librarian Assistant Learning Support Coordinator and assistants, Admin Secretary, Finance Secretary, visiting counselor, Canteen Manager, COOSH Operations Manager, Junior & Senior Coordinators, Team leaders & Junior staff and other associated support and care staff. The Administration Building (C Block) contains our School Reception, Meeting Room, Staff Room, and the Principal and Assistant Principal's offices. The School Counsellors' office is located at the end of E block. Our Canteen is fully accredited as a Healthy Canteen and serves nutritional food and drinks. We also have an extensive student Library, fully equipped Computer Laboratory, and enviable Teacher Resource section. The Hall is conveniently located near significant buildings and is regularly used by the entire school community. The Before and After school program (COOSH), from two locations. Children in Pre-school-Year 1 attend COOSH at the ELC with Kim Ehlers as the ELC Care Coordinator. Children in Years 2-6 attend COOSH in A Block with Jessica Pedemont as COOSH Director. Holy Family has play areas that are not only extensively supervised by our staff but also full of age-appropriate play equipment and vast ground space for more massive group activities. Holy Family is a Sun-Smart school and adopts a vigilant approach to student safety. View full school

All undergraduate students take a specific number of credits in the Liberal Arts Core. These include writing, mathematics, the natural and social sciences, humanities, philosophy, and theology/religious studies. Interwoven in the vision and mission of Silver College of the Holy Family is experiential learning. Experiential learning is the process of taking what each Silver College of the Holy Family student is learning in the classroom and providing them with career-related experiences such as internships, on-campus jobs, clinical, practicums, and student teaching. Each of these opportunities provides the student with hands-on work experience that prepares them for careers and helps build each student's resume. During each experience, the student has the support of a faculty, staff, and host supervisor who helps each student reflect on each career related experience and assists them with relating the experience to their future career goal. Silver Lake College of the Holy Family traced its educational foundations to 1885 when the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity established the College's forerunner institution on Silver Lake near Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Its purpose was to prepare young women who entered the Religious Community for the apostolic work of teaching. When many states in the 1920s required state education certificates or a degree, the Sisters were sent to teachers' colleges to pursue academic degrees. With the Depression of the 1930s, continued education at these colleges became financially prohibited. Therefore, the Superior of the Community, Mother Generose Cahill, proceeded to have a Holy Family Convent wing—a college. The Sisters who had attained college degrees would be the core educators of this new foundation. In 1935 Holy Family College was established. Before laywomen were admitted in 1957, nursing students from the Holy Family Hospital School of Nursing attended the College by special arrangements. By the end of the decade, the College admitted its first male students and became coeducational in 1969. In 1960, a new structure was built on a 36-acre tract of land adjacent to the Holy Family Convent. Becoming a separate corporation in 1972, its name was changed to Silver Lake College of the Holy Family. As professional needs changed, studies expanded: business and computer science programs, degree-completion programs, and off-campus, professional development coursework. Graduate-level programs are offered in four areas: Master of Arts in Education focusing on Teacher Leadership or Administrator Leadership Master of Science in Leadership and Organizational Development Master of Music in Music Education with a focus on Kodály

  8. 9. Holy Family Catholic School and Sixth Form, formerly known as the Holy Family Technology College, is a very popular mixed secondary school with around 1150 students aged 11-19. The school’s Catholic ethos underpins all that we do and forms the basis of the Holy Family Way. We are a member of the Federation of Catholic Schools of Waltham Forest and work closely with our feeder primary schools to provide the best possible Catholic education for all our young people. We aim to educate the whole person, to develop each student’s academic potential as well as nurturing their creativity, spirituality, character, and resilience. Most of our students spend seven years with us, leaving the sixth form to start their degree courses at university, or to begin high-quality employment. We seek to instill in each of our students the belief that they should have a strong concern for others and that they should seek to do good in their school and their wider community. The school has very close partnerships with our parishes and with parents (including through an active PTA) all of which helps to reinforce this Catholic. In school, there is a very great emphasis on extra-curricular activities and all students are offered every opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills through after-school clubs in an array of different fields including sport, music, and drama. The achievements of our students and staff were highly praised in our most recent Ofsted report and the school has won numerous awards for the quality of academic outcomes we achieve. The following extract from that report summarises the main points in our Ofsted report of 2014: “Pupils’ and students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is a strong feature of the school’s work. This contributes hugely to the sustained good results at the end of Year 11 and to mature young people in the sixth form. Teaching over time is mostly good and some of it is outstanding. It is underpinned by a strong approach through which teachers and students share a love of learning and this secures good progress for all learners. Senior leaders, staff, and governors are committed to the common goal of providing high-quality education. Pupils behave well, underpinned by a common approach which stresses responsibility and kindness towards others as well as towards oneself.” We are fortunate to have a thriving sixth form and from September 2015 this will be housed in brand new accommodation. We accept applications to our sixth form from our own Yr 11 students and also from students from other schools across the borough and beyond, who would like to experience their sixth form education in a school-based sixth form with a Catholic ethos. “An ethos is a way of living, behaving and doing things by people, though diverse, follow common values and are united by a shared vision of life.” (Monsignor Stack 2013). We are a Catholic school and daily prayer and worship are integral to all that we do. We provide a range of opportunities for this. Staff briefings every morning begin with a prayer/reflection. Registration includes prayer and every lesson is expected to begin or end with a prayer. We offer staff and students the opportunity to attend Mass weekly on each site. At other times of the year, we celebrate Mass in school, at the Our Lady and St George’s church. Once a year the entire school community gathers together at the Assembly Hall, the only time all 1,250 members of the school community can be in one place together. There are opportunities for students to receive the sacrament of reconciliation during Advent and Lent. Clergy from the local deanery and beyond make themselves available to hear confessions and on occasions, we have had ten priests in the hall administering the sacrament. It is important to note that the ethos permeates all aspects of school life “The curriculum as a whole, and every part of it is religious since there is nothing which does not ultimately relate to God.”(Evaluating the Distinctive Nature of the Catholic school).
