About Me

  1. Dasmesh Punjabi School (DPS), now a Group 1 Independent School, began in February 1983, with 142 registered students, as a weekend school teaching the Punjabi language. The Khalsa Diwan Society of Abbotsford, in its efforts to preserve the Punjabi heritage in the Fraser Valley, was instrumental in the formation of the Dasmesh Punjabi Educational Association that was to manage the School. In September 1986, under the direction of Mr. Dalip Singh Gill as the pioneer Principal (a District Education Officer from Punjab, who had retired from his job to bolster the efforts of the Association), Dasmesh Punjabi School became a full-fledged English-medium school teaching the regular B.C. Ministry of Education curriculum as well as two additional courses: Sikh Studies (Traditional religious music- Shabad Kirtan) and Punjabi language. It had 11 students from Grades 1 and 2, two teachers (Mr. Dalip Singh Gill and Mrs. Evelyn Budzinski), and two classrooms adjoining the South Fraser Way main Gurdwara (temple). Provide quality education with English as a medium of instruction. Teach two additional subjects apart from the regular B.C. Ministry of Education mandated curriculum. These were Punjabi and Sikh Studies. Impart education in a Gurmat environment that would be free from smoking, drinking, and drugs. The Schools growth rate has been very positive. In light of this, the DPS Association purchased an unused District 34 school building on 4th Ave. Close to the U.S. (Sumas) border. This second Campus-the Intermediate Campus-opened its doors in September 1995 to grades 4-8 children (grade 8 added for the first time) under the Vice-Principal, Mrs. S. Chand. They had joined the School in 1989 after immigrating from the South Pacific. In July 2005, the DPS Association came full circle when it bought Valley Christian School, a relatively new school complex that stands on land between Mission and Abbotsford. With Waheguru’s Blessings, the DPS Board is working with Principal Dalip Singh Gill’s able and experienced direction. It plans to consolidate and expand educational facilities on this one site. Grade 3-10 moved there in September 2006, Kindergarten-Grade 2 joined them in September 2007. The School started the 2008-09 year with four Kindergarten classes for the first time. Mr. Dalip Singh Gill officially announced handing over the principal’s duties at the May 9, 2008 Opening Ceremony of the Matsqui Campus to Mrs. S. Chand. On January 5, 2009, Sandeep Kaur Lidder also assumed Mr. Gill’s administrative functions at the School. The University of the Fraser Valley awarded Mr. Gill, an Honorary Ph.D. in June 2009. Dr. Dalip Singh Gill now continues to serve the community as well as the School through the Council of the British Columbia College of Teachers and as a DPS volunteer, respectively. The new 2009-10 year began with additions of new programs to enhance our curriculum even more. Notable among these are the 3 L’s Program for Learning Assistance and Literacy Enhancement for K-Grade 4, and the extension of core French instruction, starting right from the Kindergarten level. Dasmesh Punjabi School has served the lower mainland community for over three decades. Late Dr. Dalip Singh Gill, the founding Principal of Dasmesh Punjabi School, started this school with a vision to promote heritage language, culture, and quality education under a safe learning environment. We are a faith-based K-12 Group 1 independent school. Dasmesh School started with 11 students and one teacher in 1986 at Khalsa Diwan Gurudwara. We have grown to become a vibrant school of choice. Our students perform exceptionally well in the Foundations Skills Assessments and Departmental exams every year. Our unique blend of academics, language, culture, and religion have created an exceptional learning environment. Also, Dasmesh Punjabi School is a member of the B.C. Schools of Character. Students at our School promote six adopted core values, namely: Respect, Responsibility, Courage, Empathy, Integrity, and Service. Please join us in making this unique School an even better one. During your time here at Dasmesh, we will give you opportunities to excel in academics and sports and promote your language, culture, and faith. Move confidently into the unknown future, fortified with the strength of character. Thank your parents and grandparents, and acknowledge your teachers. We will rejoice in your success. Here at Dasmesh Punjabi School, we believe in a team effort. Hence, our teachers, staff, and students work together to achieve unmatchable academic results and thus inculcating the habit of teamwork and collaborative effort right from the beginning. We frequently update the latest teaching methodologies. According to the latest Guidelines for 2016, we would proudly be offering Project-based Learning through our interactive classrooms, whereby web-based reading and learning programs would be included in the syllabi. We also believe in Learning by doing and organize various Field trips regularly. Another factor that makes our School unique on the Academic Front is that we are a Kindergarten to Grade 12 school, where students start at Kindergarten as toddlers and graduate from Grade 12 as young adults, essentially becoming a second home for our students spend 13 years at this institution. As a result, the bonds & friendships they form with their peers become cemented for life. Dasmesh Punjabi Science Department offers general science courses for all intermediate grades taught according to the B.C. Ministry of Education Science curriculum. Our Department takes pride in involving students in extracurricular science-related activities and has been selected for Canada- full Science Fairs and competitions like the Salmon Enhancement Program and Yale Secondary Science Olympics. Grade 10 students continue to maintain robust Provincial Exam results. At Dasmesh Punjabi School, our students have access to the latest technology to enhance their learning experience. We use innovative programs such as Robotics, Coding, and 3D Modelling to promote critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Our ICT programs integrate technology into other subject areas and allow the students to learn through design and exploration. Our students from Grade 7 onwards use Chromebooks to complete a variety of tasks. We emphasize the safe and responsible use of technology and run a Digital Literacy Program customized for various grade levels. Dasmesh Punjabi School is the first Indo-Canadian School in the Fraser Valley that allows learning moral and cultural values, right from Kindergarten. Heritage Studies is a vital component of our school curriculum. DPS students have been able to enjoy the unique privilege of Guru Granth Sahib every morning. Their moral and spiritual growth supports our students according to the teachings of Sikhism. Our goal is to develop human goodness, mutual respect, love, compassion, and service of humanity in our students’ minds. We aim for a well-balanced educational institution that emphasizes our students’ heritage language and Sikh Studies as additional subjects to those that the B.C. Ministry of Education prescribes. We follow the Ministry-mandated curriculum for Grades 5 to 12 and the department-developed one for Kindergarten to Grade 4. By the end of Grade 10, our students can write the Grade 12 Punjabi Exam. This satisfies the graduation requirement for a second language. There has been a consistent pass rate of 100% every year, and our School is justifiably proud of this record. With Waheguru’s Blessings, DPS students are fulfilling the mission and vision of its founders. View full school

  10. ‘A school should not be a preparation for life, a school should be Life!’ is the underlying philosophy at Sri Dasmesh – a school that vibrates enthusiasm, excitement, and opportunity for each individual who walks through the school gates. Eager and joyful young learners are greeted with courtesy and personal care as they make their way around the school halls and walkways. Opportunity for discovering the best in them waits at every turn, be it in their grooming, their language, or their habits. Established in the year 2001 we are non-profit based and our fee structure is about the lowest amongst international schools in Malaysia. Effective January 2014, we are a full-fledged Cambridge International School offering the Cambridge curriculum, with students sitting for the IGCSE examinations (International General Certificate of Education) in Year 11. The school has had an excellent track record since inception with 100% passes in all National Exams held. We have frequently received awards from the Ministry of Education for outstanding results and students graduate to pursue further education both locally and abroad. Many win scholarships for higher education with their excellent academic performance and leadership qualities. Teachers at Sri Dasmesh nurture each student preciously we emphasize personal care to bring out the best possible in each child. The focus is ‘inside-out’ development paying close attention to the maturity of thought and action. We continuously attend training and camps to harness better skills and knowledge in our promise to develop a caring, principle-centered and disciplined social society. Ours is a unique blend of a forward-thinking educational approach complemented with timeless principles and ‘common sense’ truths that have withstood the test of time – personal leadership, morally conscious goals, the pursuit of spirituality and happiness life skills, and intellectual wisdom. Life is rich and varied with character building as a daily pursuit at Sri Dasmesh. Sri Dasmesh places equal emphasis on value-added learning, complementing the curriculum with enrichment activities. We teach leadership, values, and respect through various instruments at school: The Leadership Program with Franklin Covey, the Three Golden Rules, the Two Silver Rules, Meal Time Prayers, and Interfaith worship. Student Campaigns and special events are common features of school life. Sri Dasmesh takes pride in its homegrown product – the school’s Enrichment Program. This program introduces a whole new range of experiential learning at no extra cost to parents. As the word suggests, this program is to ‘enrich’ the child and make school enjoyable and wholesome. Here, the emphasis is on creativity, left-brain approach, projects, and activities. Students look forward to these classes which have been built into the regular timetable and therefore do not extend beyond school hours. Key highlights of the program are the teaching of Leadership, Living Skills, World History, Mandarin, Computer Skills, Music, Punjabi, Yoga & Meditation, Performing Arts, and Values Education. Students at Sri Dasmesh are keen sports enthusiasts and the school calendar is testimony to their involvement in Athletics and various games. Annually, they compete at inter-school, district, and national levels. Much awaited events each year include Sports Camp, Cross Country Run, Sports Day, and Dasmesh Premier League. Each year more and more students are crowned winners in Track & Field Events, Hockey, Netball, Football, Squash, Table Tennis, Chess, and Tennis at district and state levels. View full school
