  3. As the premier urban, public research university in the state, Virginia Commonwealth University's mission is to advance knowledge and student success through its commitments to: A dynamic, learner-centered environment that fosters inquiry, discovery, and innovation in a global setting. Research expands the boundaries of new knowledge and creative expression and promotes translational applications to improve human health. Interdisciplinary collaborations bring new perspectives to complex problems and mobilize creative energies that advance innovation and solve global challenges. Health care strives to preserve and restore health for all people, seek the cause and cure of diseases through groundbreaking research, and educate those who serve humanity. The diversity provides a climate of inclusion, dedication to addressing disparities wherever they exist, and an opportunity to explore and create in an environment of trust. Sustainable university-community partnerships that enhance the educational, economic, and cultural vitality of the communities VCU serves in Virginia and worldwide. Virginia Commonwealth University is the place where you can make it real. We believe students have the power to turn ideas into a solution that makes the world a better place. And we are not the only one who believes in our students. Research happens throughout Virginia Commonwealth University. Faculty and student researchers turn to the Office of Research and Innovation as the hub for resources and support. Virginia Commonwealth University is a vibrant, welcoming community. It is a place where you can be yourself or figure out who that self is. The best way to do that is to meet other people. People with similar interests, people who are entirely different, people you would never meet otherwise. They will make your college experience meaningful and help you be a part of something bigger than yourself. VCU's downtown Richmond location provides loads of unique educational opportunities for our students. From service-learning projects to internships at local businesses to visits to state government offices, our students are continually learning from the city they call home. Going to college in the city is entirely different from going to a school with a more isolated, traditional campus. There is so. Much. to. Do. And Richmond is not just any city. It has got character. A state capital with an unlikely mix of qualities — historic, artsy, food-obsessed, Southern, diverse, laid-back — it has just the right dose of grittiness to give it an edge. Virginia Commonwealth University is home to more than 1,600 international students from 108 countries. As one of the top research universities in the U.S., we appreciate the global perspective and cultural diversity international students bring to our vibrant campus. With more than 220 degree and certificate programs, VCU has something for everyone, including many opportunities to gain real-life experience and perform the necessary research. Joining a fraternity or sorority at VCU can enhance your college experience. Whether it be finding a social niche, helping you reach your academic goals, or helping our community, membership in a fraternity or sorority adds an element to the college experience for which there is no substitute. At VCU, we offer a diverse mix of fraternities and sororities, hoping that everyone who wants to join a group finds one that closely matches their values and personalities. The Fraternity and Sorority Life Office provides guidance and support to 40 international fraternities and sororities at Virginia Commonwealth University. The VCU fraternity and sorority community consists of four governing councils: the College Panhellenic Council, the Interfraternity Council, the Multicultural Greek Council, and the National Pan-Hellenic Council. These four governing councils provide a governance structure for the 40 chapters. The community's overall direction is guided by the professional staff in the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life. Dedicated to the support and encouragement of responsible, independent student media organizations that connect, explore, and enrich the university's many constituencies' lives. We operate on a model of individual responsibility and professional standards instead of censorship and administrative control. We promote the values of integrity, tenacity, creativity, and honesty in the pursuit of excellence. Student Media is primarily funded by a portion of the Student Activity Fee, part of the annual student bill. As such, our publications are free to all students as available. Membership to our outlets is at the discretion and current needs of each organization, but there are no major or class year requirements to get involved. The Student Media Center has three professional staff members, two adjunct instructors, and a small hourly student support staff crew. Besides serving as advisers to individual students and media outlets, we provide graphic design services, advertising sales oversight, media/skills training, space management, and supplemental human resources and fiscal administration support. Additionally, the staff and organizations are guided by the Student Media Board, an appointed board consisting of VCU staff, faculty, and at-large student appointees. The Board also approves funding requests at the end of each spring semester. Way back — we are talking more than 175 years ago — in 1838; another name knew VCU. We were the Medical College of Hampden-Sydney, later becoming the Medical College of Virginia. It was not until 1968, when we merged with Richmond Professional Institute, that we were given the name Virginia Commonwealth University. But one thing is for sure: We have never stopped making history. View full university
  4. The mission of Commonwealth School is to educate young people from diverse backgrounds to become knowledgeable, thoughtful, and creative adults, capable of careful analysis, fruitful cooperation, responsible leadership, and deep commitment. Commonwealth aims to be a school: With the highest standards of academic excellence Where students learn to think for themselves, to exercise responsibility and initiative in their actions With a community of talented teachers and promising students from diverse backgrounds That takes maximum advantage of its rich urban setting Where arts are a vital element of daily life That equips students to use a wide range of tools for inquiry and research effectively That promotes physical and emotional health and fitness That provides the friendly atmosphere of a small, supportive community That helps students establish the foundation for rewarding and productive lives Our gifted and accomplished teachers set the highest standards in keeping with our mission and work hard to help their students meet them. In the liveliness and warmth of a small yet richly varied community, classmates' talents and curiosity often generate much of the excitement. As they move through grades 9-12, our students develop a large shared frame of reference: cell biology, visual and performing arts, Greek and Roman history, Hamlet, and their collective creativity and sense of humor. They also learn about the city around them formally and informally, through courses, independent projects, and community service. "To become knowledgeable, thoughtful, and creative adults, capable of careful analysis, fruitful cooperation, and deep commitment." This commitment is the aim of a liberal education. Liberal education is an idea that the high-pressure world often takes a back seat to education as training, as giving students the skills necessary for success and leadership. Equipping students with those skills is essential, and the trajectory of our alumni's lives confirms that they leave the Commonwealth prepared to flourish. Commonwealth alumni have overseen the development of predictive search at Google and run the New York City Department of Transportation. They have advised American presidents. Some teach physics, history, math, English, economics, philosophy, and classics at leading universities. Our alumni have founded theater and puppet troupes. They play in renowned chamber ensembles, they direct and act in feature films, write and produce TV series. They have set up and run nonprofits to provide medical care to young women in west Africa. The pilot commercial jetliners and Navy fighters. One has gone from chief counsel for Massachusetts's governor to a career in opera and back to the law, now serving as Assistant State Solicitor in the Attorney General's office. When our alumni visit, they all talk about the critical importance of the skills they developed at Commonwealth—those of reading closely, writing clearly, and thinking critically. They talk about training. But they also talk, as that senior did, about the way the school shaped their characters and lives. A liberal education, to trace the idea back to its origins, is an education for freedom ("liberal" and "liberate" come from the same root): It aims for the fullest development possible of one's human faculties, which empowers one to live fully and freely. It is important to us that in all of our work, our students develop the capacity for deeper and more meaningful engagement with all life's experiences, the moral imagination necessary for thoughtful, ethical living, and the knowledge and commitment that informed and engaged citizenship requires. As our students learn to listen and respond attentively to classmates in English and science class, as they work together to cook a meal at our Hancock weekend or wash dishes after lunch here at school, and as they reflect with friends on the lessons of love presented with such rich humor in our winter play, Almost Maine, they are gaining the depth, imagination, and skills of collaboration and citizenship that will make possible knowledgeable, thoughtful, and creative lives. Commonwealth cares about the kind of person you will become.

  6. Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine educates aspiring physicians and scientists to serve society using a community-based, patient-centered, interprofessional, and evidence-based education model committed to inclusion, promotes discovery, and utilizes innovative techniques. Geisinger Commonwealth was established through visionary individuals' grassroots efforts who foresaw what a community-based medical school would bring to the region and worked to make it a reality. Their goal was to provide more physicians and improved healthcare resources for the northeast and central Pennsylvania people. The vision was to create a unique medical education experience that focused on caring for people in the context of their lives and their community. The roots of Geisinger Commonwealth began in 2004 with the Founding Seven. This group included area physicians Charles Bannon, MD, Gerald Tracy, MD, Robert Wright, MD, business people, and community leaders Robert Naismith, Ph.D., and Gerald Joyce and attorneys Mark Perry and Michael Costello. The Northeastern Pennsylvania Medical Education Development Consortium was established by 2005. The consortium included business, medical, community, and government representatives. After acquiring funding from sources including the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania, and another state, federal and private philanthropic sources, the Commonwealth Medical Education Corporation was formed. The Commonwealth Medical College (TCMC) was incorporated in 2008 and welcomed its first class of Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree students and Master of Biomedical Sciences (MBS) degree students in August 2009. In April 2011, TCMC opened the 185,000-square-foot Medical Sciences Building in Scranton that houses the academic and research programs. The Middle States Commission on Higher Education granted TCMC full accreditation on June 27, 2014, and the Liaison Committee for Medical Education granted TCMC full accreditation on July 7, 2014. TCMC integrated with Geisinger on Jan. 1, 2017, and became Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine. Geisinger Commonwealth has administrative and educational space at hospitals in Scranton, Danville, Wilkes-Barre, and Sayre, as well as in Doylestown at the Pennsylvania Biotechnology Center of Bucks County. Geisinger Commonwealth has relationships with more than 25 hospitals in the northeast and central Pennsylvania that provide students' learning environments. The college has four regional campuses: North, South, Central, and Guthrie, integral to its community-based education. Community engagement is part of the fiber of Geisinger Commonwealth. More than 1,200 volunteer clinical faculty members throughout the region provide students with early clinical experiences and training across the four years of medical education. Families throughout the region are generous in allowing students to follow them to appreciate the social context and the impact of illness on patients' lives. Students are required to pursue research projects in quality improvement and community health. Geisinger welcomed national health care leaders to "From Crisis to Cure," a patient care symposium held at Geisinger Medical Center on November 8-10, 2017. Featuring former Sec. of State and First Lady Hillary Clinton, former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, MD Sen. Pat Toomey Ezekiel J. Emanuel, MD, Ph.D. Dean Ornish, MD Gail Wilensky, Ph.D., and Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf, leaders discussed the most pressing topics facing health care today and ways to cultivate innovative solutions. Geisinger's institutes deliver a team-based approach for providers, scientists, researchers, educators, and other healthcare professionals at every Geisinger location, providing consistency and continuity of care — no matter where a patient enters Geisinger. We are home to one of the region's largest teams of fellowship-trained cancer specialists. They use the latest care options every day, including national clinical trials, genetic testing, and many others. Our approach is multidisciplinary, meaning that our team includes doctors, nurses, other cancer providers, and specialists from many other medical areas. Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine educates aspiring physicians and scientists to serve society using a community-based, patient-centered, interprofessional, and evidence-based education model committed to inclusion, promotes discovery, and utilizes innovative techniques. Second-year medical students Jasmine Santos and Andres Rodriguez are co-presidents of GCSOM's chapter. Yoseph Aldras, who served as president in his second year, is now an external liaison for LMSA's National Policy Committee. In that position, he helped plan the summit, developed promotional materials, worked with invited speakers, and reviewed policy resolutions drafted by attendees at the three-day event. 9.
