  1. Indiana University students get it all—the storybook experience of what college should be like, and the endless opportunities that come with it. Top-ranked academics. Awe-inspiring faculty. Active campus life. International culture.Phenomenal music and arts events. The excitement of IU Hoosier sports. And a jaw-droppingly beautiful campus. We have nurtured doers and leaders over our past two centuries by creating an academic atmosphere where revolutionary ideas and unexpected collaborations rule the day. IU educational experiences change our graduates' lives—and the lives of the communities they serve as experts and professionals. Environmental policy, social psychology, music, nuclear physics, foreign languages—our diverse academic programs are among the best, with several ranking #1 and in the top 10 nationally. We are also known for innovation and firsts like the nation's first informatics school. IU faculty, students, and alumni aspire to their fields' highest standards, bringing home prestigious national and international awards: Tonys, Oscars, Nobel Prizes, Pulitzer Prizes, Emmys, Grammys, Olympic medals, Guggenheims, and Fulbrights. You will find us on podiums and stages of all kinds—performing, accepting honors, standing up for human rights, and presenting our research. The top-ranked IU Jacobs School of Music and our fine arts, theatre, and entertainment offerings rival much larger cities.IU stages more than 1,000 performances every year, in venues that are artistic experiences in themselves. The Musical Arts Center—which we call "the MAC"—is one of the grandest arts venues in the United States, seating 1,460 and featuring a 90′ x 60′ main stage. We extend our famous IU "Hoosier hospitality" to ideas as well as people. With open-mindedness and kindheartedness, we support a diverse, international environment that seeks out all perspectives and draws on our global experiences. IU consistently earns accolades for overseas study programs and worldwide philanthropic ventures—and a forward-thinking campus climate. Building on two centuries of outstanding achievements in education, research, and the arts, Indiana University has set forth a mission to keep IU on the course of greatness in our third century. Bloomington is the flagship residential, an extensive doctoral campus of Indiana University. Its mission is to create, disseminate, preserve, and apply knowledge. It does so through its commitments to cutting-edge research, scholarship, arts, and creative activity to challenging and inspired undergraduate, graduate, professional, and lifelong education to culturally diverse and international educational programs and communities to the first-rate library and museum collections to economic development in the state and region and meaningful experiences outside the classroom. The Bloomington campus is committed to full diversity, academic freedom, and meeting the state's changing educational and research needs, the nation, and the world. At IU Bloomington, we promise to help you fulfill yours. We do it by giving you everything college should be. More than 550 academic programs, including opportunities you will not find anywhere else. A cream-and-crimson-clad family that you can call on throughout your life. And a springboard to a rewarding career and a bright future. Beginning college, or transferring to a new college, is a big transition. That is why we have the Office of First-Year Experience Programs (FYE): to help undergraduates start strong at IU.FYE will help you explore IU's many opportunities, pursue the ones that interest you, and shape your IU experience into what you want it to be—starting with New Student Orientation. An Indiana University Bloomington education transforms you. Whether you are an undergraduate or graduate student, whether you are from South Bend, San Antonio, or Shanghai, you will encounter ideas and have experiences that help you refine your goals, develop the skills to reach them, and put you on the path to success. Momentous IU breakthroughs and inventions—like the structure of DNA and the fluoride in our toothpaste—are part of a legacy of transforming how we live through research. IU researchers study an enormous range of interests, tackling the big questions in one of the most respected and exciting environments for discovery. It is no wonder IU is ranked among the world's 50 most innovative universities. Through research opportunities that are as infinite as the cosmos, you will be inspired by new perspectives that draw on IU's global expertise and our passion for doing good in the world. Whether you are in a chemistry lab studying peptides to find a cure for diabetes, in a 3-D visualization studio mapping brain networks, or on an archaeological shipwreck expedition in the Caribbean Sea, you will leave your mark on what you care about. That is what we do—dig deeply into understanding how our world works, so we can make it a better place.IU student and faculty researchers are working together on hundreds of transformative studies—promoting human rights and public health overseas, developing life-saving technologies, and improving community resources here in Indiana. It is a story of broad-minded thinkers and impressive feats. Outstanding artistic contributions and world-altering inventions. Strong leaders and brave community-builders. Indiana University celebrates its bicentennial in 2020. These milestones represent the amazing 200-year life of our flagship Bloomington campus. Herman B Wells (1902–2000), Indiana University's long-standing president (1938–1962) and chancellor (1962–2000), is credited with elevating the university's stature in research, the arts, and international studies. One of the great leaders in higher education, Wells devoted his life to IU. Advancing African American students' rights, supporting groundbreaking research from the Kinsey Institute, protecting our campus green spaces, and establishing the Lilly Library are among his lasting achievements.
