  1. We welcomed our first students in 1916, making KCU one of the nation's founding colleges of osteopathic medicine. We've been at the forefront of health care ever since. We are continually creating new programs such as the Clinical Psychology Doctoral program, an MS in biomedical science, and specialized dual degrees. And we're continually renewing our commitment to research and our communities, most notably with our new campus in Joplin. We offer more than a degree. We offer a student experience; for a century, we've been devoted to a purpose – the education and training of caring, compassionate osteopathic physicians. Today, that purpose includes training students in bioethics, biomedical sciences, and psychology. KCU is the second-largest provider of physicians in Missouri and Kansas, with 72 percent of alumni practicing in primary care specialties and 24 percent in rural areas across the nation. The KCU student community is routinely cited as one of the most welcoming of its kind—and it shows. The relationships you make with your peers will make you a better student in and outside of the classroom—and provide you with a professional network for life. As a KCU student, you may seek medical services for acute care or short-term treatment at any of our affiliate locations. If you require chronic care or need to be seen during off-hours, please contact your provider. Student health services, through an on-site clinic, are not provided or contracted by KCU. However, KCU students may seek health care through a group of off-campus, endorsed clinical providers who have affiliations with the University. As a KCU student, you may seek medical services for acute care or short-term treatment at any of our affiliate locations. We encourage all KCU students to establish a health care home with a primary care provider. Frequently, being an established patient enhances how quickly you can be seen for a problem. If you require chronic care or need to be seen during off-hours, please contact your provider. The following clinics' information is given to provide you with some available options. Students need to present their insurance card when seeing any health care provider. All expenses for health services are the responsibility of the student. KCU students are required to maintain personal health insurance. The University has partnered with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas City to offer a student health insurance plan to all students. All KCU students are enrolled in the plan, but the University does allow students to opt-out of the plan should they already have a health insurance plan that meets the KCU's minimum coverage standards. KCU-Kansas City students and faculty members have the opportunity to learn about and participate in research. Participation in the research process enables students to develop additional knowledge and critical-thinking skills that may improve patient care. It also continues the lifelong learning process for faculty as mentors. Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences is a community of professionals committed to excellence in education, research, patient care, and community service while improving the well-being of the communities we serve. Our vision is to become the most student-focused health sciences university in the nation by delivering value cultivating team spirit, and becoming a trusted partner. Our core values are: Integrity: Demonstrating respect, honesty, and professionalism Compassion: Caring for students, patients, colleagues, and all humanity Excellence: Achieving quality in all that we do Collaboration: Working with others to recognize diverse perspectives and achieve mutual goals Intellectual Curiosity: Pursuing personal and professional growth Innovation: Embracing new practices to improve outcomes Heritage: Remain true to our Midwestern values and the guiding principles of osteopathic medicine
