Welcome to St Aloysius’ College, a school of long-standing tradition, having served the local Catholic community since 1879. We are privileged to be the oldest surviving foundation of its kind in the Archdiocese of Westminster. Many distinguished people have been educated here. We seek to build on our many successes daily and we're delighted, therefore, to be included in the Islington Building Schools for the Future program, which has provided us with outstanding facilities and resources. We are fortunate in being the only school in the area with our 13-acre playing fields which have now been augmented by our new on-site Sports Hall with exceptional resources. Extensive computer facilities are available for boys to use in class and beyond to support their independent research. Most of our classrooms and laboratories have been fitted with electronic whiteboards and projectors. A separate music suite caters to the many pupils receiving instrumental tuition and for our successful bands and ensembles. Our most recent Ofsted report in 2012 judges us to be OUTSTANDING in all core areas of teaching, achievement, leadership, and behavior & safety. Our excellent performance at GCSE is also a testament to this - in 2014, 98% of our boys achieved 5 or more 5 A*-C grades with 72% including Maths & English. The subject breakdown of A*-C grades was as follows: 82% in Maths, 81% in English, and 89% in Science. In 2010 we joined Central Foundation, Highbury Fields and Highbury Grove in the Islington 6th Form Consortium and a full range of 16-19 courses are now being taught at the school. This has proved to be a great success with demand exceeding expectations. Today, St Aloysius’ College is a comprehensive Day School for Roman Catholic boys in the age range 11-19. It takes six forms of entry at the age of 11+ and is administered by a Board of Governors acting under the trusteeship of the Archdiocese of Westminster. St Aloysius’ College is a voluntary aided school, proud of its Catholic tradition. There is a commitment to encouraging a strong Catholic ethos and the whole atmosphere of the school reflects this in Religious lessons, Assemblies, Acts of Worship, the availability of the Sacraments as well as in the attitude of pupils. All pupils are involved in these activities. When pupils arrive at St. Aloysius in their Year 7 they are placed in one of six tutor groups with two of these groups made up of pupils in the higher ability range. Pupils are then taught either in these tutor groups or in ability sets, particularly in English, Maths, and Science. A review of the boys’ progress takes place immediately after each of the two formal exams and boys are moved between groups or sets should it be considered appropriate. More able students will be given extension work to stretch their potential and learning support is available through our Gifted and Talented program. Personal Social and Health Education, Citizenship and Careers are taught on a cross-curricular basis and sex education is taught in religious education and science. There is a strong commitment to Christian religious education throughout the school. We are very proud of the excellent opportunities for vocational education offered at St Aloysius College. All pupils spend two weeks on Work Experience as an integral part of the Year 10 course. There are also several links with local colleges that aim to develop the abilities of our pupils in vocational areas. Careers guidance is given to boys on an organized basis by the school, who interviews each of our pupils during Year 11. There is a well-resourced library in school. Boys are encouraged to use the library as part of timetabled lessons and on an individual basis. There are computers with multi-media facilities to assist pupils with their studies, supporting an ever-increasing range of fiction and non-fiction texts. View full school
