  1. As the premier urban, public research university in the state, Virginia Commonwealth University's mission is to advance knowledge and student success through its commitments to: A dynamic, learner-centered environment that fosters inquiry, discovery, and innovation in a global setting. Research expands the boundaries of new knowledge and creative expression and promotes translational applications to improve human health. Interdisciplinary collaborations bring new perspectives to complex problems and mobilize creative energies that advance innovation and solve global challenges. Health care strives to preserve and restore health for all people, seek the cause and cure of diseases through groundbreaking research, and educate those who serve humanity. The diversity provides a climate of inclusion, dedication to addressing disparities wherever they exist, and an opportunity to explore and create in an environment of trust. Sustainable university-community partnerships that enhance the educational, economic, and cultural vitality of the communities VCU serves in Virginia and worldwide. Virginia Commonwealth University is the place where you can make it real. We believe students have the power to turn ideas into a solution that makes the world a better place. And we are not the only one who believes in our students. Research happens throughout Virginia Commonwealth University. Faculty and student researchers turn to the Office of Research and Innovation as the hub for resources and support. Virginia Commonwealth University is a vibrant, welcoming community. It is a place where you can be yourself or figure out who that self is. The best way to do that is to meet other people. People with similar interests, people who are entirely different, people you would never meet otherwise. They will make your college experience meaningful and help you be a part of something bigger than yourself. VCU's downtown Richmond location provides loads of unique educational opportunities for our students. From service-learning projects to internships at local businesses to visits to state government offices, our students are continually learning from the city they call home. Going to college in the city is entirely different from going to a school with a more isolated, traditional campus. There is so. Much. to. Do. And Richmond is not just any city. It has got character. A state capital with an unlikely mix of qualities — historic, artsy, food-obsessed, Southern, diverse, laid-back — it has just the right dose of grittiness to give it an edge. Virginia Commonwealth University is home to more than 1,600 international students from 108 countries. As one of the top research universities in the U.S., we appreciate the global perspective and cultural diversity international students bring to our vibrant campus. With more than 220 degree and certificate programs, VCU has something for everyone, including many opportunities to gain real-life experience and perform the necessary research. Joining a fraternity or sorority at VCU can enhance your college experience. Whether it be finding a social niche, helping you reach your academic goals, or helping our community, membership in a fraternity or sorority adds an element to the college experience for which there is no substitute. At VCU, we offer a diverse mix of fraternities and sororities, hoping that everyone who wants to join a group finds one that closely matches their values and personalities. The Fraternity and Sorority Life Office provides guidance and support to 40 international fraternities and sororities at Virginia Commonwealth University. The VCU fraternity and sorority community consists of four governing councils: the College Panhellenic Council, the Interfraternity Council, the Multicultural Greek Council, and the National Pan-Hellenic Council. These four governing councils provide a governance structure for the 40 chapters. The community's overall direction is guided by the professional staff in the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life. Dedicated to the support and encouragement of responsible, independent student media organizations that connect, explore, and enrich the university's many constituencies' lives. We operate on a model of individual responsibility and professional standards instead of censorship and administrative control. We promote the values of integrity, tenacity, creativity, and honesty in the pursuit of excellence. Student Media is primarily funded by a portion of the Student Activity Fee, part of the annual student bill. As such, our publications are free to all students as available. Membership to our outlets is at the discretion and current needs of each organization, but there are no major or class year requirements to get involved. The Student Media Center has three professional staff members, two adjunct instructors, and a small hourly student support staff crew. Besides serving as advisers to individual students and media outlets, we provide graphic design services, advertising sales oversight, media/skills training, space management, and supplemental human resources and fiscal administration support. Additionally, the staff and organizations are guided by the Student Media Board, an appointed board consisting of VCU staff, faculty, and at-large student appointees. The Board also approves funding requests at the end of each spring semester. Way back — we are talking more than 175 years ago — in 1838; another name knew VCU. We were the Medical College of Hampden-Sydney, later becoming the Medical College of Virginia. It was not until 1968, when we merged with Richmond Professional Institute, that we were given the name Virginia Commonwealth University. But one thing is for sure: We have never stopped making history.
