We often hear that early years settings should be communication supportive or communication friendly spaces for children and about the importance of having a communication supportive environment. This means lots of different things... the ways that adults talk with children, the physical environment or the space around us, and the ways we use toys, books, and activities. This factsheet aims to help parents make a communication supportive environment at home. That way they can do their best to make learning to talk and developing their child’s communication skills easy, fun, and rewarding.
Children build their abilities to put words together upon their experiences of playing, listening, and understanding words and sentences. Young children start by using single words and gradually put two words together then three and four, using the words they know. Alongside building their sentences, children often use whole expressions that they have heard and learned e.g.: “Where’s-it-gone?” or “Fish and chips”.
What a child says is influenced by other skills such as their understanding, vocabulary, memory, ability to get things in the right order, and emotional state. During their primary school years, children typically develop the way they put words together. They gradually use longer sentences and more complex connecting words to help sequence their ideas and explain events. What they say starts to sound well-formed and more grammatical. However, they may still make errors e.g.: “I caught it.”

We aim to empower and inspire our children to become respected citizens to enable them to make valuable contributions locally and globally.

We aim to develop positive self-esteem in each child to encourage the best efforts, independence, self-reliance, and responsibility for their actions. As a staff, we will provide clear expectations of behavior to which everyone can aspire. This policy takes into account the needs of all children including Special Educational Needs, disability, and vulnerability.
