Westminster is a leading co-educational school for day and boarding students, offering an exceptional education from Early Learning to Year 12. Supported by an active global community, we incorporate our values of being kind, inclusive, courageous, mindful, and curious into everyday school life, along with the Uniting Church's ethos and international ideals of Round Square.
We believe that student wellbeing complements academic success. Our focus is on developing each student's skills and attributes, using creative and critical thinking to help them thrive in an increasingly complex world. We want them to be adventurous beyond the curriculum, inspired to achieve more than they thought possible.
Our highly qualified and well-respected teaching staff are dedicated to the growth of every student. Students excel because they feel valued and safe, encouraged to take an appropriate level of risk, and challenge themselves to move forward should they fail. As educators, we guide and facilitate student-learning journeys shaped by teamwork, inquiry, and innovation.
Since 1961, the school has built wonderful academic, sporting, artistic, and creative achievements. We have extensive academic and co-curricular programs, impressive grounds, state-of-the-art infrastructure, and outstanding facilities. However, to be at the forefront of education in an ever-changing world, we can never see a standstill. We remain committed to continually improving our educational environment and the technology essential to contemporary learning.
We are always ready to showcase what Westminster offers prospective families and believe that an accurate measure of success is to see where our students will be in seven years. What will their life look like then? Are they useful and kind? Are they grateful? If they left school with a sense of confidence without entitlement, a willingness to be involved in things bigger than themselves, a desire to achieve and serve, they have the key ingredients to being happy. Everyday interaction with our Old Scholars suggests we are on the right path to developing respectful and engaged individuals who will use their lifelong love of learning to make a difference.
We offer superb facilities set on 23 spacious hectares, more than 40 subject choices in Year 12, around 200 sporting teams, activity clubs and ensembles, outstanding wellbeing programs, and teachers who are leaders in their field. Westminster provides the best resources for exceptional education, giving boys and girls from Early Learning to Year 12 the opportunity to achieve more than they thought possible.
Established in 1961, Westminster School is a leading co-educational independent day and Boarding School in Marion, a south-west suburb of Adelaide, South Australia, close to beaches and the city. We are affiliated with the Uniting Church and are active members of Round Square, an international network of innovative schools. Westminster has around 1200 students from Early Learning to Year 12.
Westminster School takes a holistic approach to education and aims to develop 'the whole person'. Our success measures reflect this ethos, valuing student achievement broadly in terms of academic results, participation in Arts, Sport, and Service Programs, and development of skills for leadership and good citizenship.
Planning for Westminster School began in the late 1950s. People of vision were convinced that Church schools were desirable, and there was an urgent need for a second day and boarding Methodist boys' school in Adelaide. In 1957, land in the southwestern Adelaide suburb of Marion was purchased, and funds continued to be raised over the subsequent years. On 19 June 1960, the Foundation Stone was laid, marking the construction of Westminster's first buildings.
The school opened on 7 February 1961, comprising 143 boys – 86 in Years 1 to 7 and 57 in Year 8. One building was used for classrooms, offices, and a standard room for staff. Twenty-eight boarders lived off-campus for the first year at Shaftesbury House in Adelaide. An oval was also prepared, and many trees and shrubs were planted. The Headmaster's residence and sports change rooms completed the first wave of buildings to be erected.
After 17 years as a boys' school, coeducation was introduced in 1978 across all year levels, requiring the first accommodating changes to the school's infrastructure. In 1993, girls commenced boarding at Westminster by taking up residence in self-contained home units at the school's southern end.
Westminster has steadily grown into a leading co-educational school, offering an extensive curriculum that encourages all students to achieve more than they thought possible.
Academically, Westminster students always achieve excellent results. Our Year 12 cohort achieves results that are consistently amongst the best in the state.
Today, with a balanced number of boys and girls comprising around 1200 students, the school has grown to a 23 hectare (57 acres) campus with separate areas for an Early Learning Centre, Junior Primary (Reception to Year 2), Middle and Senior Primary (Years 3 to 7) and Senior School (Years 8 to 12). There are four central ovals in the 'green space' of Westminster's grounds, including three soccer pitches and numerous tennis, netball, and basketball courts.
Two large venues of note, which have had a significant impact on Westminster life, are the great Sports and Swimming Centre, opened in 2003. Our exceptional 1000-seat Performing Arts theatre opened in 1988 and is still considered one of the best of its type in Australia. In 2013, the new Boarding Precinct opened to incorporate the Girls' Boarding House, the new Boys' Boarding House, and the new Co-educational Recreation Centre. The school also owns 'Glenroy,' a 68-hectare property on the banks of Lake Alexandrina, and the Westventure campsite at Point Sturt, both of which are used extensively in our Outdoor Education program.
Even from its earliest years, Westminster has always had a strong international focus to ensure our students have the opportunity to appreciate the world in which we live. Westminster is a member of Round Square, an international association of schools.
In 2011, Westminster celebrated its Jubilee of 50 Years, which was captured in the school's history book 'A Venture in Faith' by renowned historian Rob Linn. While the School community enjoyed the year-long celebration to acknowledge milestones and historical events, we are looking forward to what the future holds in terms of advancing learning and student care. Building on our students' and families' expectations, the support of dedicated staff, and the strength of a beautiful community, both past, and present, Westminster will never be at a standstill. At the same time, it remains at the forefront of education and student wellbeing.
