Welcome to the St Francis Xavier’s College, Catholic Academy. The College has a history going back to 1842 and has a strong Catholic-based Christian ethos. Students at the College are encouraged to achieve their full potential through the mission statement of “…life in all its fullness”. The College believes in developing rounded individuals so that students are prepared for life academically, spiritually, morally, and socially. The College’s specialist status as a Mathematics and Computing College is key in meeting these aims.
The College is supported by the Brothers of Christian Instruction. Their aim “to make Jesus well known” is brought to life by all in the College, especially in the support which students give to those who are less fortunate. This aim also underpins the College’s inclusive nature.
St Francis Xavier strives to build a Christian community of love and respect to educate young people to meet the challenges of life confidently, to develop their unique talents to the full, and to live out the values of Christ and his Gospel.
We offer a curriculum which is appropriate for all its pupils and which, where it is reasonably practicable, takes account of the expressed views of parents. The curriculum must have regard to the need to prepare boys and girls for the world of work, higher education, and life in modern Britain.
At St Francis Xavier’s College, we are committed to promoting the Spiritual, Moral, Social, and Cultural (SMSC) development of our pupils. We work with the boys in this area in form and year assemblies, PSHCE days, and through many extracurricular activities. Some examples of how academic departments contribute to the Spiritual, Moral, Social, and Cultural development of our pupils.
As part of our work in this area with pupils, we are also fully committed to promoting the fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs
The objective of our work in this area is to: enable students to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem, and self-confidence, enable students to distinguish right from wrong and to respect the civil and criminal law of England, encourage students to accept responsibility for their behavior, show initiative, and to understand how they can contribute positively to the lives of those living and working in the locality of the school and to society more widely, enable students to acquire a broad general knowledge of and respect for public institutions and services in England, further tolerance and harmony between different cultural traditions by enabling students to acquire an appreciation of and respect for their own and other cultures • encourage respect for other people, encourage respect for democracy and support for participation in the democratic processes, including respect for the basis on which the law is made and applied.
High-quality first teaching and additional interventions are defined through our person-centered planning approach across the school contributing to our provision management arrangements. These processes help us to regularly review and record what we offer all children or young people in our care and what we offer additionally. These discussions also serve to embed our high expectations amongst staff about quality first teaching and the application of a differentiated and personalized approach to teaching and learning. We make it a point to discuss aspirations with ALL our learners. This is a whole-school approach and this report will promote how we underpin this practice across our classrooms, pastoral care, and support arrangements.
Assess: In assessing a young person, the school will carry out an analysis of the pupil’s needs, drawing on teacher assessments reading and spelling scores the experiences of the pupil's previous progress and levels of attainment. The individual’s progress is compared to that of peers and national data is also used in this initial assessment period. Pupil and parental views are sought, as are those of outside agencies who are involved in the assessment process. Any parental concerns are actively listened to and recorded. Assessments are reviewed every term in school.
The Sixth Form is an integral part of the College, with a fine tradition of preparing young men and women for Higher Education and the world of work. Proud of its history yet forward-thinking in outlook, SFX has an enviable reputation with Universities and employers, both locally and nationally.
