WillowWood has been ahead of the educational curve in recognizing that one size does not fit all since its inception. We have a long tradition of delivering targeted, personal education for diverse learners that considers each student's unique needs, inclinations, and strengths. WillowWood opened in 1980, founded by Joy Kurtz and Heather Spear. These two teachers had developed a unique teaching approach while working across the hallway from each other in the 1970s. They combined the needs of students in the particular education program and those of students' general population, thus creating a new and distinctive individualized approach to education that is still the foundation of WillowWood today. Today we have 250 students every year who thrive based on this approach. Meet the team who ensures that students leave inspired and ready to take on the world.

We all learn differently. When teachers recognize this and help students understand how they learn best, it creates a genuinely limitless environment. It's not earth-shattering. It is merely good teaching to provide an opportunity for students to understand themselves in the context of a world that is constantly changing around them - and to do so in a place that is caring if needed, nurturing at times, firm with guidelines, positive in approach, and always, always challenging students to be their best. My staff and I strive to provide such an environment at WillowWood in our efforts to produce life-long learners fully cognizant of the world around them and the tools they need to establish their place in it.

We are a family-style school where friendly and genuine interaction happens between students and teachers. As a result, there is a remarkable lack of clique-competition and bullying. Students are encouraged to set personal goals and to develop self-advocacy and communications skills. Classes at WillowWood are usually fewer than 16 students, and students spend much of their time in even smaller groups. Classes are small, the atmosphere is warm, and the pedagogical approach is holistic. Our Pod System and coordinated cross-level schedule allow for all learners to get the teaching they require. Academic supports are numerous, and specific-skill instruction is available for all ages and levels.

Our effective teaching strategies, enthusiastic staff members, innovative programs, and friendly environment bring out the best in students, build self-confidence, and inspire a love of learning. All of our courses in Lower, Middle, and Upper School (Grades 1-12) follow the Ontario Ministry of Education's curriculum guidelines, and students leaving WillowWood for other schools leave prepared and on-track. We are inspected regularly by the Ministry of Education and strictly adhere to their regulations and guidelines.

The Foundation Program is a unique, research-based approach to academic skill development for students in grades 1-2. Perhaps you saw us on Facebook, curious about how your child can get double the Language and Math instruction. It is supported by music and physical education. Our small class sizes and individualized programming allow students to work at their challenges, find and embrace their strengths and passions, and reach their potential. A student might be advanced in one subject area and need help in another. For example, if the student was excelling in English and struggling in Math, they can work at two grade levels simultaneously.

It has changed the way children can learn – and – how teachers can teach. Technology is an integral part of our teaching and learning process through several evidence-based practices to support academic performance. Finding each student's areas of passion and strengths is a key focus. All of the staff (not just the teachers) keep an eye out for opportunities that may allow a student to find or explore a talent or interest – whether this is in a subject area, an extracurricular activity, a social situation, or any other niche. Strategies for writing tests, project-completion, studying, and social skills are included in every grade. Personalized social skills development can help your child to:

    • Cope with stress
    • Work effectively in teams
    • Treat others with respect
