At Stanstead College, boys and girls in Grades 7 through 12 live and study on a picturesque campus surrounded by the hills of Quebec's Eastern Townships and Northern Vermont. Founded in 1872, the College has a population of approximately 250 students from around the world and a highly involved faculty and staff. In keeping with the school motto - Sanitas, Sapientia, Religio or Health, Wisdom, Integrity - Stanstead College builds its program around the pillars of academics, athletics, and student life.
By providing students with a structured and enriching educational experience in a small, globally aware community, Stanstead College builds a foundation for success at university and beyond. Our vision rests on our ability over nearly a century and a half to reinforce traditional values while embracing innovation in a constantly changing world. We achieve success by providing students with a secure, sustainable environment for learning, personal growth, and leadership. Our diverse and nurturing community promotes the values of health, wisdom, and integrity.
The Stanstead College experience instills in its students a special combination of skills, knowledge, and values that prepare them to achieve their own goals as well as contribute to their communities as responsible, global citizens.
Based on Quebec Ministry of Education guidelines, the Stanstead College curriculum is broadly divided into junior (Grade 7, ? and senior levels (Grade 9, 10, 11), with the core subjects of Mathematics, English, and French emphasized at each level. Grade 11 is highlighted by advanced-level courses in Mathematics, French, Chemistry, and Physics. Students may opt for French as a second language or Français as a first language (langue maternelle).
Students graduate from high school upon the successful completion of their Grade 11 (Secondary V) year. Students may choose to attend Quebec CEGEP (two-year college subsidized by the Quebec government) or enroll in Grade 12, which provides students with an intensive university preparatory program. Because of the sequential nature of the Quebec curriculum, senior students are encouraged to enroll at Stanstead College in Grade 9 or 10 at the latest. Ideally, junior students should enroll in Grade 7.
A new angle on university prep, Stanstead College's exclusive Grade 12 residence, Cowen House, offers Stanstead College students a sense of what university dorm life is like. With separate wings for boys and girls, the co-ed residence provides structured, supervised living along with certain freedoms befitting their senior status. The house opened in the fall of 2019.
There is a study period each evening for students at all grade levels. Students are placed in Study Hall when they receive two or more unsatisfactory effort ratings in one report. Students who maintain an A- average without any unsatisfactory effort ratings may be allowed the privilege of optional study. With these two exceptions, all students study in their rooms or the library.
During the day, one-on-one support is offered with junior faculty or the LRC coordinator during spares and/or academic support periods. Students may request extra help or maybe mandated to attend based on teacher/adviser requests. Academic advisors are also available to help their advisees either directly or by recommending other sources of assistance.
Through the Learning Resource Center, qualified teachers offer students various learning strategies related to organization, time management, note-taking, test-taking, memory and recall, writing, essay planning, advanced reading comprehension, academic confidence, and critical or abstract thinking.
The library is located on the first floor of Colby and features a vast selection of reading material, including fiction, non-fiction, and reference books. Visitors can also read magazines, borrow DVDs, or access printers. The reading area is bright and inviting, the perfect spot for studying and reflection.
