The Montessori method of education finds its roots in the discoveries of Dr. Maria Montessori. Its practical implementation is further defined by the Association Montessori Internationale (A.M.I.), a governing body established by Dr. Maria Montessori to ensure her work's integrity is maintained internationally. The A.M.I. is the only organization established by Dr. Montessori. Humberside Montessori School is a part of this authentic tradition by holding a Certificate of Recognition from A.M.I. for children aged 3-6 and 6-12.
Humberside Montessori School is nestled in the High Park community's heart in the vibrant city of Toronto, Ontario.
Beginning on August 13, 1987, in a house at 310 Clendenan Avenue with a small kith of twelve young children and two staff members, Humberside Montessori has since evolved to include a close-knit citizenry of almost three hundred children and more than twenty staff members. As well, we include in our family a few hundred supportive and committed parents!
In May of 1990, we started a second primary class at the campus located at 2525 Bloor Street West. In September 1992, all our primary Montessori classes moved to 411 Clendenan Avenue. We began an elementary Montessori program for children aged 6-12.
As our school community rapidly grew, we needed to relocate to a larger and more permanent Children's House. Thus, our work has continued at a beautiful and gracious location at 121 Kennedy Avenue since September 2000. The school building was redesigned by an architect specifically for Montessori education. Humberside Montessori School is registered with The Ministry of Education of Ontario and employs AMI-certified teachers. We adhere to the A.M.I. standards.
Felix Bednarski, M.A., A.M.I., and his wife Molly Galle, R.N., are the two principal directors, owners, and full-time employees of Humberside Montessori School. They lead a team of devoted and professionally trained A.M.I. Montessori teachers and support staff. Felix received his A.M.I. Montessori teacher's training from the Foundation for Montessori Education.
Humberside Montessori School is enthusiastically committed to acknowledging and supporting the healthy growth and development of all aspects of the human personality during the formative years of childhood. This is through the genuine work of Dr. Maria Montessori. In this way, we can assist the child in his/her natural quest for knowledge and independence and in his/her task of creating him/herself and striving to realize his/her greatest potentials. This embodies Dr. Montessori's principle of education as an aid to life.
The school community is composed of four Casa Dei Bambini environments, three Lower Elementary, and one Upper Elementary classroom. All children enjoy spending their after-school time in a large, specially prepared room. During regular school hours, children use a large gymnasium, backyard garden, and uniquely designed playground. We are also planning to open a unique Montessori Resource Centre available to all parents in the community. We also have an area for parent workshops and lectures.
This unique facility provides a wholesome environment for children to grow in knowledge and delight. It creates the optimum working environment for faculty members, while its location and function fully respond to the family's needs. The Program and philosophy of Humberside Montessori School are based on the education method discovered and developed by Dr. Maria Montessori.
We are privileged to offer Montessori programs at four levels. The first three levels encompass a three-year cycle. The journey begins at the Primary level (Casa) for children 2 1/2 to 6 years of age. It then continues with the Lower Elementary level for children 6 to 9 years of age, and then eventually proceeds through the Upper Elementary level 9 to 12 years of age, to the 2-year Adolescent Program for children 12 to 14 years of age.
Humberside Montessori has proudly gained A.M.I. Accreditation, every environment at each level is fully equipped with AMI-approved materials and directed by a professionally trained AMI-certified teacher, specializing in the individual level.
It is worthy to note that because the Montessori philosophy is based on the natural, wholesome growth of Rolex store the child during specific stages in their development, children must begin in the primary level at an age that will ensure the successful completion of the three-year cycle during their distinct stage. (This age is typically 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 years old upon entry of the Casa level). It follows that each progressive level requires full completion of the level preceding it.
The task of nurturing a child's growth and well-being cannot be assumed without the interest and participation of the child's parents. To offer maximum support and assistance to the child, the aims and objectives of the parents and the school must be in harmony. Humberside Montessori School systematically organizes parent Information Sessions, Material Presentation Workshops, Observations, and Parent-Teacher Interviews to help parents become more enlightened about Montessori their decision to have their child's development supported by this unique and natural method of learning. All parents are encouraged to attend Parent Education Nights. Humberside Montessori School has a wonderfully cooperative parents' association whose leading purpose is to enhance community life at our school. This committee organizes fund-raisers and a host of special events throughout the school year, and all parents are welcome to join.
