We are leaders in students' empowerment and education with dyslexia and language-based learning differences in Vancouver, BC. Our fully accredited, independent school serving students in grades 1-12 provides a learner-centric environment with the most effective research-based methods to optimize personalized learning, cognitive development, and post-secondary opportunities.
Our Junior School focus is on breaking the code of language. The program is centered on the development of reading, writing, spelling, vocabulary, and numeracy. The learning environment offers small class sizes of ten students or less. Junior students stay with their class throughout the school day for a core curriculum of language arts, maths, science, social studies, and physical education. Each class has a foundation of direct instruction, frequent reassurance, and explicit feedback. All teachers have specific training in multisensory teaching techniques.
Each student works intensively with an Orton-Gillingham certified language specialist on a program specifically designed to meet his or her unique needs in the areas of reading, spelling, writing, handwriting, and executive functioning. Our school-wide Executive Function Curriculum helps students build processes in critical areas such as goal setting, planning, prioritizing, organizing, shifting, flexibility, self-monitoring, and manipulating information in working memory. Our students use iPads and Chromebooks to build digital skills, access information, and learn to communicate and collaborate. These tools help provide a multisensory experience, enhance skills and buffer areas where students may need help.
Our Middle School focus is on developing and solidifying literacy and numeracy skills. Personalized skills development, health, career education, and executive function coaching are features of this program. Class size is a maximum of ten students. We prepare our middle school students to be lifelong learners who communicate, think critically, and solve problems creatively. Students are encouraged to develop their talents and abilities in disciplines from academics to fine arts.
All Fraser Academy, middle school students follow the designated BC curriculum. They receive extended time in English and math to solidify the core skills to pursue their high school goals. Courses are taught in a multisensory fashion and accommodate the specific academic needs of each student. Our faculty works closely with students to develop critical 21st-century skills. Students learn to understand and maximize their unique learning styles, advocate capably for their learning differences, and lead with their strengths.
Our graduation program focuses on providing students with the preparation to succeed as self-advocates and independent learners in the post-secondary arena of their choice. Class size is, on average, seven students. Our goal is to teach and encourage senior school students to lead with their strengths and do so with confidence. We prepare our students to be lifelong learners who communicate clearly, think critically, solve problems creatively—and advocate capably for their learning differences. Over 90% of our graduates continue to post-secondary education.
All our high school students follow the designated provincial curriculum, which leads to the BC Dogwood diploma. The core curriculum covers English, maths, science, social studies, and physical education. We offer an impressive selection of academic elective subjects and experiential learning through the science program and international learning opportunities. We also offer a feature Outdoor Education program for a cohort of grade 11 students called Odyssey. Courses are taught in a multisensory fashion and accommodate the specific academic needs of each student. Our faculty works closely with students to develop critical 21st-century skills and help bring core reading, spelling, writing, and maths skills to age-appropriate levels.
